NFL teams open training camp, starting the long journey to Super Bowl 60 in San Francisco
The NFL season is underway. The road to San Francisco for Super Bowl 60 begins in the grueling summer heat.
Some teams have new coaches. A couple of old coaches have new teams. Star players have switched uniforms. There are position battles to determine.
And, plenty of storylines to watch.
Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles aim for a repeat. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs look to rebound after being denied the first three-peat in Super Bowl history.
Training camp dates
The Chargers and Lions were the first teams to have their full roster in camp. The Cowboys and Chiefs will have theirs on Monday. The rest of the league starts Tuesday. The Falcons and Steelers arrive Wednesday.
Jim Harbaugh's Chargers face off against Dan Campbell's Lions in the Hall of Fame game on July 31 in Canton, Ohio.
A pair of division rivalry games will open the season. The Eagles will host Dallas to begin the regular season on Sept. 4. The Chiefs and Chargers meet in Brazil the following night.
New head coaches
Pete Carroll is back in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders after just one year out of coaching. Carroll, who turns 74 in September, has a tough task building the Raiders into a playoff contender in a difficult division.
Former Patriots star linebacker Mike Vrabel takes over in New England, replacing Jerod Mayo, who lasted one season after replacing Bill Belichick.
The Bears turned to former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. The Jets hired former Lions DC Aaron Glenn. Kellen Moore left Philadelphia after one championship season to take over in New Orleans. Liam Cohen's success as Tampa Bay's OC landed him the head job in Jacksonville. Jerry Jones gave Brian Schottenheimer a chance to lead Dallas.
Teams with new quarterbacks
The Steelers are going all-in on Aaron Rodgers, hoping the 41-year-old, four-time MVP can take them to the big game.
The Raiders acquired Geno Smith, reuniting Carroll with the quarterback he chose to replace Russell Wilson in Seattle.
Sam Darnold ended up with the Seahawks after a career-year in Minnesota.
Joe Flacco is back in Cleveland where he was the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2023. The Browns also traded for Kenny Pickett and drafted Dillon Gabriel in the third round and Shedeur Sanders in the fifth.
Wilson and Jameis Winston ended up in New York, but the Giants also selected Jaxson Dart in the first round.
Justin Fields has a third chance with the Jets.
J.J. McCarthy is the man in Minnesota after he missed his entire rookie season with a knee injury.
Saints rookie Tyler Slough gets an opportunity to replace Derek Carr, who retired.
The Titans have No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward.
Top camp storylines
Some contract issues still need to be resolved.
The Bengals have yet to sign first-round pick Shemar Stewart and they haven't agreed to a new deal with All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who wants a raise after leading the league in sacks last season.
The dispute with Stewart, a pass rusher the defense needs, isn't about money; it's about the team trying to insert language in Stewart's contract that would trigger the voiding of his salary guarantees with a breach or default by him.
Another contract situation to watch involves Dallas. Micah Parsons is due for a new deal that's expected to make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. T.J. Watt currently holds that distinction after Pittsburgh gave him a $123 million extension worth an average of $41 million per season. Jones waited too long on Dak Prescott and ended up making him the NFL's first $60 million man last season. Now, he's going to end up paying Parsons more than anyone else who doesn't play QB.
Quarterback competition
The Browns have to choose between Flacco, Pickett, Sanders and Gabriel. Veteran Daniel Jones is competing with Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis. Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in 2023, has been injured often and has a lingering shoulder problem.
Shough and Spencer Rattler are battling in New Orleans.
Wilson, Winston and Dart should make it a tough decision for the Giants.
Ward has to beat out Will Levis in Tennessee.
Joint practices
With more teams opting to rest quarterbacks and key starters in preseason games, joint practices have become the way to prepare players for the regular season. A total of 29 teams have scheduled joint practices with other clubs.
On the road
Six teams - the Bills, Cowboys, Colts, Chiefs, Rams and Steelers - will spend their entire camp away from their facilities. Dallas, which trains in Oxnard, California, is the only team going out of state.
Roster cuts
Teams can carry a maximum of 90 players throughout training camp and for all of their preseason games. Rosters must be trimmed to 53 by 4 p.m. EDT on Aug. 26.

Fantasy Football: 'Absolutely disgusting' — Could Ashton Jeanty end up as the next Trent Richardson?
If you're someone who had the first pick in your dynasty fantasy football draft this summer, you may want to look away. The Las Vegas Raiders used the 6th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to select Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty, who was by far the top back coming out of college. Jeanty, who stands 5-foot-8 and 211 pounds, is coming off one of the best seasons by a RB in college football history. He finished with 2,601 rushing yards, 27 shy of the record set by Barry Sanders back in 1988 at Oklahoma State. He rushed for 209 yards and a score in the Mountain West Championship to help the Broncos defeat UNLV and advance to the College Football Playoff. Jeanty would rush for 104 yards on 30 carries in a loss to Penn State in the CFP. Now in the NFL, Jeanty lands in what appears to be a good situation for fantasy football in Las Vegas, where he'll be the lead back with little competition. But despite all that, Yahoo fantasy football analysts Matt Harmon and Justin Boone aren't convinced Jeanty will be a sure-thing. Boone points out it may take a bit for the Raiders to mesh as a team under new head coach Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, as well as new QB Geno Smith. Harmon had to stop himself before making a "absolutely disgusting comparison" between Jeanty and former Cleveland Browns 3rd overall pick RB Trent Richardson back in 2012. Boone echoes that "volume is king" and he believes Jeanty will be OK at the end of the day. Even Richardson as a rookie finished as the RB8 that season after going for 1,317 yards from scrimmage with 51 catches and 12 total TDs. Advertisement So as a first-round pick in 2025, Jeanty should be alright given the type of volume we can expect. But if you have Jeanty in dynasty or keeper formats, you may have to keep a close eye on him during the season and evaluate him for the future.

Kyren Williams won't hold out as Rams training camp begins amid his contract negotiations
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kyren Williams is neither holding out nor holding in while he negotiates a new contract during training camp with the Los Angeles Rams. The former Pro Bowl running back reported to camp as scheduled Tuesday at Loyola Marymount University, and he'll participate in practice this week instead of sitting out while his agent works on his deal. Williams also said he'll stay in uniform if the negotiations, which have produced progress in recent sessions, still stretch into his fourth regular season. Advertisement 'For me, there was no decision,' Williams said. 'I play football. That's what I love. ... Being here right now is a no-brainer, because I've got people I've got to take care of. Putting my feet on the grass is the only way I know how to do that.' The Rams will meet again with agent Drew Rosenhaus on Wednesday as they continue to work toward a long-term deal with Williams, the Notre Dame product and boyhood Rams fan from St. Louis. Williams has rushed for 2,582 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding 464 yards receiving and five more TDs over three seasons as a versatile producer in Sean McVay's offense. 'There's definitely been progress from when we started at OTAs to where we're at now,' Williams said. 'I don't know when it's going to get done. For now, it's just time for me to be present where my feet are at. ... I want to play for the Rams. That's who I want to stay with, and I know it will work out.' Williams has been the Rams' starting running back for the past two years, and he made the Pro Bowl in 2023 while finishing third in the league with 1,144 yards rushing despite playing in only 12 games. He had career highs of 1,299 yards and 14 rushing touchdowns last season. Advertisement The Rams have repeatedly said they want to keep Williams even though they've used fairly high picks on running backs in each of the past two drafts, adding Blake Corum in the third round in 2023 and trading up to pick Jarquez Hunter in the fourth round last April. 'We have gotten closer,' McVay said of the Rams' negotiations with Williams. 'Haven't got the deal across the finish line, obviously. And (Williams) has done everything that he can control that makes you want to say, 'Let's try in good faith to figure this out for this guy,' because he's representing all the things that are right about the Rams, and the way he plays, his spirit, his mindset, what he is as a teammate, how he responds to adversity, the physical and mental toughness, it means a lot, and I love this guy and love what he stands for and what he's about.' Williams made some changes in the offseason to prepare for his contract year. He hired a chef whose meals have him feeling 'alive and vibrant ... I wake up every single morning and I'm just full of energy.' Williams is also working on his grip strength after his regular weight workouts. He fumbled five times during the regular season — tied for the second-most by a running back — and again in the postseason, putting a damper on his numbers.
