Top UK supermarket launches new subscription pass — with major Christmas perk

Metro4 days ago
From Clubcard to Sparks, the top UK supermarkets all have their own loyalty schemes for customers, but one has just launched something interesting.
After a successful trial, Waitrose is now offering shoppers a new subscription known as a Delivery Pass, which is intended for those ordering their groceries online or via the app.
The pass allows people to pay upfront for delivery slots, with three different options available – one month for £8, six months for £45 or 12 months for £85.
It's thought this could save shoppers £4 per week in delivery costs, which could equate to as much as £123 per year, with deliveries costing between £2 and £4 without the pass, depending on the time slot they are booked for.
Those with a Waitrose Delivery Pass will be able to book up to one available grocery delivery slot per day, at no additional delivery cost to their order.
One of the biggest draws for the subscription will likely be the major Christmas perk it offers to customers.
As we get further into the year, many will soon start thinking ahead to the big Christmas shop, but securing a festive delivery slot can be incredibly tricky.
However, those with the pass will be entitled to early access to Christmas delivery slots, as long as the pass was purchased before September 1 that same year.

This perk will be subject to some terms and conditions, which Waitrose says will be confirmed in an email ahead of the Christmas period.
But there is a catch – whether you're booking your weekly shop or a Christmas delivery, all of the slots are still subject to availability, so paying for the pass doesn't mean you are guaranteed anything.
You'll also have to meet the minimum spend requirements of £40 (after any discounts/offers have been deducted) in order to use your Delivery Pass.
Speaking about the new subscription, Waitrose director of online Laura Burbedge said: 'We're investing in our online business to continuously improve it, giving our customers even greater value and the best possible experience.
'Thousands of customers signed up for Delivery Passes through our trial, so we expect to see strong demand across the UK as we roll it out.'
This comes after Waitrose recently made a change to one of its most popular loyalty scheme perks.
The retailer offers My Waitrose shoppers a free hot drink, as long as they bring a reusable cup with them, but in a bid to ensure everyone gets their caffeine fix, customers can now borrow a cup if they've forgotten their own. More Trending
Sounds like a pretty great deal, but it comes with a catch. If shoppers don't bring the cup back to a designated collection point within seven days, they'll face a £3 charge.
And that's not all, the supermarket is also said to be trialing US-style plastic trolleys in its Brent Cross branch.
These new designs are said to be lighter and easier to steer, without the clattering noise traditional carts can make as they're wheeled through the aisles.

Additionally, they could prove less attractive to thieves, who typically steal the metal models in order to sell on for scrap.

Tesco knocks £96 off iPhone 15 for Clubcard members – now just £29.99 a month

ANYONE in the market for a new handset will want to check this one out. Tesco Mobile is offering the Apple iPhone 15 for just £29.99 a month, but only for Clubcard holders. I've been covering iPhone deals for a while now, and some of the best offers often come from the big supermarkets. Tesco's deal gets you the iPhone 15 for £29.99 a month, exclusively for Clubcard members. The plan includes 6GB of data, with the monthly SIM price dropped from £15 to £13.50, and the handset cost coming in at £16.49. It's a solid option if you want a high-quality iPhone but don't need the latest and greatest, and just want enough data to get through the month. Without a Clubcard, the price jumps to £31.49 a month, so you're saving £96 over the 36-month contract. Plus, Clubcard prices are frozen for the duration of your contract, which means no surprise hikes later on. If you're not already a member, signing up for a Clubcard is free, and with the perks it unlocks, it's a no-brainer. If you need more data, Tesco's also offering the iPhone 15 with 50GB for £34.99 a month with a Clubcard. Even non-member prices are decent, and with Tesco Mobile axing sneaky mid-contract price hikes, it's one of the more shopper-friendly networks out there. This is a great price for the iPhone 15, which is still one of the best models Apple has put out in recent years. You get a 6.1-inch display and Apple's slick Dynamic Island feature, which replaced the old notch and brings the UI up to date. There's also a powerful 48MP main camera that captures plenty of detail, perfect for family snaps and everyday moments. But so you're not caught off guard, if you're used to charging with a Lightning cable, the iPhone 15 has moved to USB-C, now the standard across most devices. Tesco is also one of the mobile providers with no roaming charges, so it's a good choice for those planning summer holidays abroad. And if this deal isn't quite right, other standout offers are doing the rounds this month. Right now, you can get £418 worth of free tech with the Samsung Galaxy S24, with deals starting at £24.99 a month. Or if you're happy with your phone, Smarty's SIM-only deals are hard to beat, like 200GB of data for just £12 a month with double data included. If you're still undecided, check out our full roundup of the across all the major networks.

Tesco shoppers have less than a week to earn 1,000 'bonus' Clubcard points

Clubcard users will need to act fast. Tesco shoppers can earn even more Clubcard points with one neat trick. However, they have less than one week left to ensure they don't miss out. ‌ Those who are signed up to the supermarket's popular loyalty scheme can earn points on their shopping, with a voucher worth £5 being made up of 500 Clubcard points. ‌ These vouchers can then be used to save money on any future shops both in store and online, or they can be doubled in value when redeemed against one of the retailer's Rewards Partners. ‌ However, Tesco is now offering its customers an extra 1,000 'bonus' points, worth £10 of vouchers, when they choose to spend their vouchers with one of their 'Days Out' partner companies. This means that families can earn the extra points and book a fun trip at a range of popular places such as Blackpool Pleasure Beach, The London Eye, Chessington World of Adventures, and more. It is worth noting that the incentive will only be available until Tuesday, July 29, with the extra 1,000 points being credited to the eligible Clubcard account by Sunday, October 19. ‌ To qualify for the extra £10 worth of points, members will need to exchange a minimum voucher worth £5 for a Days Out Clubcard Rewards Partner code either through the Tesco website or app. Shoppers don't even need to redeem their extra points on a day out, as one Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert has advised that bargain hunters don't need to book a day out to reap the benefits. ‌ In the latest edition of the MSE newsletter, a financial expert has explained that, once the extra 1,000 points are transferred to the Clubcard account on October 19, they can be used to get £10 off a food shop. They can also be used to get £20 off with any of the supermarket's Rewards Partners, just not the 'Days Out' partners. This means they can still be redeemed against the likes of Disney+, RAC, Virgin Atlantic and much more. ‌ As is the case with all Clubcard vouchers issued, they will be valid for two years from the date they were issued. However, shoppers looking to save them up can extend them when they make a small purchase on the Tesco Clubcard website, with the remaining balance being credited back as points. These will then be reissued as new vouchers when a new batch is issued after the two year expiry date, For example, a 50p purchase on a £10 voucher will then be reissued as £9.50. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Tesco's Clubcard scheme currently allows for its members to earn one point for every £1 spent in store and online, or for every £2 spent on fuel at one of its forecourt. A minimum of 150 points is needed to earn a voucher worth £1.50. First launched in 1995, the largest UK supermarket's point-based scheme is now said to be used by 20million households across the country. For more information on how to earn the extra 1,000 points with a Days Out Rewards Partner, shoppers can visit the Tesco website.

Popular Waitrose ready meal urgently recalled over 'undeclared' ingredients

The premium supermarket has urgently recalled the product due to a packaging error. UK shoppers have been issued with another food recall recently. This time it is for a popular ready meal that may be "unsafe to eat" for some consumers. ‌ Waitrose and Partners has issued a recall for its Waitrose Indian Takeaway for 2 due to a packaging error that has led some packs to contain spring rolls which are not mentioned on the label. ‌ Since the savoury snacks contain sesame and soya, both which have not been declared on the list of allergens, this means they pose a health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to the said ingredients. ‌ An allergy alert posted to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has advised that the supermarket's recall affects 1412g pack sizes with the best before date of July 25, 2025. Customers who have purchased the affected Indian takeaway meal have since been urged "do not eat", with the supermarket advising they should package it up and return it to their local Waitrose store to receive a full refund. ‌ Waitrose and Partners have been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations to let customers know about the recall. Meanwhile, the premium UK chain has since issued a recall notice that details all the information regarding why the ready meal has been recalled, alongside what to do if it has been bought. Shoppers looking for further information are being advised to contact the Waitrose Customer Care on 0800 188 884, option 4, for further information. ‌ Waitrose said in its recall notice: "We apologise it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused." Allergy alerts are generally posted by the FSA when foods have to 'withdrawn' or 'recalled' due to numerous factors that make it a risk for some consumers due to missing or incorrect allergy labelling, or other food risks. ‌ It comes after we reported that the food watchdog had to issue the same alert for multiple jars of jam sold by a Scottish firm after they were found to contain sulphites - an ingredient not mentioned on the label. Fife-based firm Sarah Gray's issued a recall for 13 strawberry and prosecco/champagne jams since they posed a possible health risk for anyone who is sensitive to sulphites and sulphur dioxide. The FSA doesn't just issue allergy alerts, as the food watchdog has also issued a recent 'food alert for action' after they found that one version of the viral Dubai chocolate bar contained peanuts, also not mentioned on the list of ingredients. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The firm has advised UK food businesses to immediately halt sales of the Noesis Schokolade Love of Dubai chocolate and to undertake product withdrawals, alongside issuing recalls for sales already made. We recently reported that the recall affects all numbers and best before dates of the 95g bars, with anyone suffering from a peanut allergy being urged not to eat the chocolate bar. It comes after the FSA previously had advised anyone with allergies to "exercise caution" when it came to consuming the TikTok-viral treat, after it was discovered that some of them may not have been intended for UK sale, therefore not meeting the high levels of food safety standards.
