Steelers defense dominates Aaron Rodgers-led offense at Friday Night Lights Practice
On the first attempt of the drill, Aaron Rodgers attempted a pass to DK Metcalf but Darius Slay was there in coverage to cause the play to backfire — defense moved up 1-0.
Rookie RB Kaleb Johnson attempted a run from shotgun on the next attempt, but was held up by LB Payton Wilson — putting the defense ahead 2-0.
On the third play, Rodgers threw a pass towards Pat Freiermuth, but Slay broke up the pass — resulting in the defense furthering their lead to 3-0.
Mason Rudolph would take over at quarterback and attempt a pass to Scotty Miller — but the wideout couldn't get his feet down and it resulted in a defensive win of 4-0.
The drill continued despite the strong defensive statement, resulting in three straight offensive scores: one from Johnson and two from QB Will Howard to RB Kenneth Gainwell and TE Kevin Folesch. The damage was already done, however, as the defense was up 4-3 at the conclusion of seven-shots.
Fans should take the offensive struggles over the past few practices with a grain of salt — as many of these issues will (hopefully) be ironed out by the regular season, while the defense should be commended for its strong performances in Latrobe.

Kane Wommack updates status of injured Alabama defensive back
On Saturday afternoon, Alabama Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack spoke to the media for what was the first time since fall camp officially began. As part of this, Wommack, who is entering his second season as defensive coordinator at Alabama, commented on many different areas of the Crimson Tide defense, some of which were players. Among that group of players in particular was returning safety Keon Sabb, who is currently working his way back from a season-ending injury sustained last October against Tennessee. Wommack was also asked the question if Sabb has since returned to 100% following Saturday's practice as well, with the Alabama defensive coordinator saying of the returning starter: "Keon's doing a really good job," Wommack said. "He has really pushed, our training staff's done a great job with him. I think he's ahead of really every marker that we had in the offseason for him, and we weren't sure if he was going to be able to go to the level that he's going right now at the beginning of fall camp, but he is, and he's here. I don't know if I could put a number on it exactly, but I mean, he's out there playing with our guys, and so he's comfortable enough to be able to do that. Sometimes, those injuries, you just have to build a callous of coming back, and I think that's something that he's really pushing himself right now to get ready for the season." Transferring from Michigan last offseason, Sabb was a day-one starter for the Crimson Tide at safety a year ago who compiled 39 tackles and 0.5 TFL across his seven games played. Sabb also had two interceptions, both of which came in the season opener against Western Kentucky. Sabb, a redshirt junior, is expected the start for the Crimson Tide at safety once again this fall, opposite of Bray Hubbard. Steelers' Cory Trice, Calvin Anderson receive troubling injury news
The bad news keeps on coming — as Steelers HC Mike Tomlin shared a health update on CB Cory Trice and OT Calvin Anderson. Following training camp practice on Saturday, Tomlin briefed reporters on the availability of Trice and Anderson — both of whom suffered injuries at Friday Night Lights practice. According to ESPN's Brooke Pryor, the Steelers head coach shared that their injuries were considered more serious than day-to-day — hardly the news fans want to hear a week out from preseason. Trice is dealing with a hamstring injury — which is both unfortunate in timing and very concerning for his odds of surviving the final roster cuts. Anderson figures to serve as the Steelers' top backup offensive tackle — and his soft tissue injury could force Pittsburgh to bring in additional offensive linemen to bolster depth. We at Steelers Wire will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available — and hopefully both Steelers recover in time to put a stamp on what's been an exciting training camp so far.
