Oil tanker involved in North Sea collision to be towed to Port of Tyne

The Guardian28-03-2025
A US oil tanker that was hit by a container ship in the North Sea is to be towed to the north-east of England after more than 200,000 barrels of jet fuel are removed over the weekend, a maritime company has said.
The Solong collided with the anchored tanker Stena Immaculate about 12 miles off the coast of East Yorkshire on 10 March, leaving one man missing, presumed dead. Crowley, which manages the Stena Immaculate, said salvage and recovery operations are moving into the next phase.
'During the weekend of 29-30 March, operations will commence at sea to transfer the remaining 202,485 barrels of Jet-A1 cargo from the Stena Immaculate tanker to tanker Fure Vyl, which is anchored nearby,' a spokesperson said.
'This lightering operation is a standard and routine maritime practice that follows established safety protocols.'
The jet fuel will then be delivered to its original destination of Killingholme, in Lincolnshire, the statement added.
The Stena Immaculate will be towed to the Port of Tyne on the north-east coast, near Newcastle, for further inspection expected to take place in early April. A Crowley spokesperson added: 'We continue to work with the appropriate authorities and remain committed to supporting the salvors and salvage operations with the highest possible regard for safety.'
The Portuguese vessel Solong arrived in Aberdeen on Friday after being towed to the Scottish city for 'safe berthing'. It was accompanied by a vessel with counter-pollution measures as it arrived at the Port of Aberdeen at about 7am on Friday.
A total of 36 people were rescued from the ships after the incident but a sailor from the Solong – named as 38-year-old Filipino national Mark Angelo Pernia – is missing and presumed dead.
The Solong's captain, Vladimir Motin, 59, of St Petersburg, Russia, has appeared at Hull magistrates court and at the Old Bailey charged with gross negligence manslaughter and was remanded in custody. He is due to stand trial in January 2026.
After the collision, thousands of plastic pellets used in plastics production, known as nurdles, were released from ruptured containers on the Solong and began washing up on beaches on the Norfolk coast, where a clean-up operation is continuing.
According to conservationists, the nurdles are not toxic but can harm animals if ingested.

East Kilbride win soured by alleged racist abuse, says Mick Kennedy as Stranraer fan ejected

Kilby star Joao Balde was the victim of alleged racist abuse after scoring against the Blues in the League Two clash Mick Kennedy admits Portuguese midfielder Joao Balde being subjected to alleged racist abuse soured their win over Stranraer. ‌ A visiting Blues supporter was ejected from K-Park moments after Balde scored a spectacular overhead kick to seal a 3-1 win for Kilby in a dramatic finish to the League Two clash. ‌ The Kilby ace celebrated in front of the visiting support, which earned him a booking from referee Cameron Stirling, but he was then allegedly the victim of racist insults from one individual in the stands, causing a short delay to the match as Kilby players surrounded the away section. ‌ Furious Kilby boss Kennedy then marched across the pitch to alert club officials and have the supporter kicked out. Moments later, Balde's day got even worse when he was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time for a late challenge on Lewis Reid. EK held out for the 3-1 win, which came courtesy of a John Robertson penalty and a Rhys Breen strike before Balde's clincher. But angry Kennedy told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "One of the Stranraer fans made a racist statement to Joao after he scored, unfortunately. "I think that is twice that's happened to Joao - it happened with an Airdrie fan last season and now today. "It is so unfortunate but that's where we are in society and football sometimes in this country. ‌ "It just puts a bit of a downer on today, the fact he has to go through that. Some people are just very stupid. "It is a strange thing to say, but unfortunately Joao just gets used to it. It is miles from acceptable, but he is okay after it. ‌ "He was booked for celebrating in front of their fans, which is fair enough. I can understand it has antagonised the Stranraer fans a bit, but he doesn't deserve that. "I don't think it was a second booking for him. He was probably a bit emotional after everything that has happened, as you would expect because it is not nice. "Maybe the referee could have used a bit of common sense in the situation that's happened, but it is what it is. ‌ "The referee asked me to go and inform the match secretary so we could get the person removed, so that's why I was going across the pitch in the middle of the game." Kilby skipper Jack Leitch says he confronted the man in question and said it was "disgusting" and crazy to see, following a man being arrested on Friday night after Bournemouth palyer Antoine Semenyo was subjected to racist abuse in a Premier League clash with Liverpool. ‌ Leitch said: "It is honestly crazy because you see it in that game last night and you think it's just so surreal, top players in the Premier League in England talking about it and then it happens here a day later. It is ridiculous. "It happened to Joao last season and it is honestly just disgusting. It should just not be taking place, especially after scoring such an incredible goal and how well he played. ‌ "He was probably our best player today and for him to stay that strong shows the character of him. "Joao repeated what was said to me and then I called the guy out on it. "The fan was denying it to me and I just stayed with Joao after it. It's just ridiculous and disgusting." ‌ East Kilbride FC officials confirmed a supporter was ejected from the ground and they will review CCTV footage/match cameras before reporting the incident to the police. Stranraer boss Chris Aitken, a former EK manager, said: "If that [racist abuse] is the case, we don't need that in the game and we don't need that associated with our club.

Chinese fighter jet comes within 200ft of Philippine plane in mid-air standoff

This is the moment a Chinese fighter jet appears to intercept a Philippine Coast Guard aircraft carrying journalists during a patrol near Scarborough Shoal. Footage onboard the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) plane shows the jet flying within 200 feet, circling and matching the aircraft's course for 20 minutes. Chinese navy ships below can be heard demanding the aircraft 'leave immediately' on the cockpit radio. It happened around the Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, a disputed atoll 140 miles west of the Philippines. At least four Chinese coast guard vessels, suspected 'maritime militia' ships, and two U.S. warships were nearby. The incident comes after a Beijing warship accidentally crashed into a smaller PCG ship on Monday (11 August) in the same area. China claims almost the entire South China Sea despite a 2016 tribunal ruling rejecting its claims.

Shocking moment huge brawl breaks out on Ryanair flight over child screaming

Police were called to the Ryanair plane yesterday evening after it arrived following a reported brawl involving two passengers on board - footage taken on board showed the mayhem Footage captured the moment a huge brawl broke out on board a packed Ryanair flight over a screaming child. ‌ Police were called onto the aircraft as it landed in Lisbon from London Stansted yesterday evening following reports of a fight between two passengers. In a clip filmed on board the plane, a mum is heard comforting her screaming child amid the chaos, saying: 'It's okay, we're going now'. ‌ Portuguese TV station SIC, which published footage of the mayhem aboard the plane, said the conflict began earlier on the flight when a youngster began crying. ‌ It added: 'Tempers only flared when the plane landed in Lisbon and headed for the gate. Police were called to deal with the incident. Because of the altercation, all the passengers ended up being held on the plane for about an hour.' It comes after a plane passenger punches flight attendant after she makes simple request. ‌ It was not immediately clear if any arrests had been made. The footage of the situation on board the plane showed there was lots of shouting - and one man appeared to restrain another in front of the mum trying to console her young child. A man beside the female passenger could be overheard saying: "Yes we arrive now." ‌ Ryanair and Portugal's PSP police force, which is said to have sent officers to the plane at the request of its pilot, have been contacted for comment. The problems are believed to have occurred on board Ryanair flight FR1882, which left London Stansted at just after 4pm local time and reached Lisbon at 7.15pm half an hour past its scheduled arrival time. The Mirror has contacted Ryanair for comment. Earlier this summer, a pilot fainted in the cockpit during a service from Barcelona to Porto, according to a source from the National Institute of medical Emergencies. At 8:19 am on Sunday, August 10, the pilot suffered 'a rapidly recovering syncope' and 'apparently recovered during the flight," the publication reported.
