Oil tanker involved in North Sea collision to be towed to Port of Tyne
A US oil tanker that was hit by a container ship in the North Sea is to be towed to the north-east of England after more than 200,000 barrels of jet fuel are removed over the weekend, a maritime company has said.
The Solong collided with the anchored tanker Stena Immaculate about 12 miles off the coast of East Yorkshire on 10 March, leaving one man missing, presumed dead. Crowley, which manages the Stena Immaculate, said salvage and recovery operations are moving into the next phase.
'During the weekend of 29-30 March, operations will commence at sea to transfer the remaining 202,485 barrels of Jet-A1 cargo from the Stena Immaculate tanker to tanker Fure Vyl, which is anchored nearby,' a spokesperson said.
'This lightering operation is a standard and routine maritime practice that follows established safety protocols.'
The jet fuel will then be delivered to its original destination of Killingholme, in Lincolnshire, the statement added.
The Stena Immaculate will be towed to the Port of Tyne on the north-east coast, near Newcastle, for further inspection expected to take place in early April. A Crowley spokesperson added: 'We continue to work with the appropriate authorities and remain committed to supporting the salvors and salvage operations with the highest possible regard for safety.'
The Portuguese vessel Solong arrived in Aberdeen on Friday after being towed to the Scottish city for 'safe berthing'. It was accompanied by a vessel with counter-pollution measures as it arrived at the Port of Aberdeen at about 7am on Friday.
A total of 36 people were rescued from the ships after the incident but a sailor from the Solong – named as 38-year-old Filipino national Mark Angelo Pernia – is missing and presumed dead.
The Solong's captain, Vladimir Motin, 59, of St Petersburg, Russia, has appeared at Hull magistrates court and at the Old Bailey charged with gross negligence manslaughter and was remanded in custody. He is due to stand trial in January 2026.
After the collision, thousands of plastic pellets used in plastics production, known as nurdles, were released from ruptured containers on the Solong and began washing up on beaches on the Norfolk coast, where a clean-up operation is continuing.
According to conservationists, the nurdles are not toxic but can harm animals if ingested.

It was thought there were no pictures of him on the night he disappeared, with his sister saying previously they did not know for sure what he had been wearing. Jillian said: "His girlfriend, Nicole, is over in Albufeira, she checked through his case to see what was missing. We think he might have had a navy blue Nike shorts and top set on. "She's absolutely devastated right now, she just wants him back." Jillian says gutted mates were left "devastated and shocked" when they realised that Greg hadn't returned to the apartments. They immediately contacted police after he was missing for 12 hours. She said: "The group had only been there for a matter of hours. They checked in and were only in the apartment for 20 minutes before heading out again. "They are all devastated and shocked by what has happened. They spent the rest of the time there searching for him and trying to help. They have all returned home today, Greg should be back home with them." Jillian says the family are in constant contact with local police who have altered the national police force in Portugal. But she says the family have yet to see proof that Greg was spotted in Cerro de Águia and are asking police to show them the CCTV clips.

Brit killed at holiday hotspot bar 'was pestering women before local attacked'
A Brit who died after being assaulted outside an Algarve bar had been 'pestering' women before a local confronted him, it was claimed today. Police confirmed yesterday a 60-year-old British national died in the morning at a hospital in the popular tourist town of Lagos. Police said they were quizzing a suspect who handed himself before being formally arrested when it emerged the attacked man had died. He is expected to go before a judge tomorrow morning in nearby Portimao. The judge will have to decide whether to remand him in custody or release him on bail pending an ongoing investigation. The assault happened just after 3am yesterday in a street called Rua 25 de Abril, in an area where there are a number of late-night bars. Paramedics, firefighters and officers from Portugal's PSP police force responded to the emergency call, although the Policia Judiciaria (PJ) has now taken over the case. A PSP official, confirming the victim was British and aged 60, said early yesterday afternoon: 'We have a suspect who is Portuguese who is with police at the moment but I am not able to say whether he has been formally arrested at this stage.' Another said officers from Portugal's PJ force were now working on the case and the police focus was on obtaining the evidence needed to put the principal suspect before a judge tomorrow. Overnight, respected Portuguese daily Correio da Manha reported the Brit had been 'bothering several women' inside the bar before a local man stepped in to help them. It said the two men began rowing inside the bar before the argument finished violently when the British national was 'attacked to the head.' The newspaper added: 'The suspect abandoned the scene after the incident and found out later on the victim had died in hospital. 'He went to the PSP police station in Lagos to hand himself in but wasn't arrested... The case was passed over to the PJ which subsequently formally arrested the suspect at his home.' Correio da Manha described him as someone who is already known to police. The PJ force has not yet made any official comment and is not expected to release any information or statement until after tomorrow's expected court appearance, which will take place behind closed doors as is normal in Portugal.

The family of a missing Glasgow man who vanished whilst on a stag do in Portugal say they have neve "known pain like it," as they continue their frantic search for him. Greg Monks, from Cambuslang, vanished hours after arriving with his mates in Albufeira in the sunshine destination of the Algarve on Tuesday evening. Greg, who is the groomsmen for his pal, sparked a major search when he disappeared after leaving the popular bustling strip to head back to the group's apartments. However no one has seen or heard from the 38-year-old since with his family, including his worried parents, currently out in Albufeira desperately seeking answers to his whereabouts. Portuguese search cops have told relatives he was last sighted on CCTV around four miles from his apartment and the strip in a quieter residential area of Cerro de Águia. Loved ones are now trying to piece together Greg's last movements as they step up the hunt to find him. As part of the families search they are asking residents of Cerro de Águia to check any private CCTV or ring doorbell footage. "We just hope somebody will have seen him," Jillian added.
