Michigan State football nearing decision from top 2026 wide receiver from Illinois
Michigan State football has been hot on the recruiting trail, and that could continue in the 2026 recruiting class.
The Spartans wide receiver coach Courtney Hawkins has had Zachary Washington high on his recruiting board in the 2026 class, and has made the Wheaton, Illinois native a high priority in the Spartans plans. Now, according to an Instagram post from Washington's father, the wide receiver is set to make his decision between three schools.
Michigan State is battling West Virginia and Wisconsin for the commitment of the 6-foot-2, 185 pound 3-star receiver, playing his high school ball at St. Francis High School.
The post from Washington's father states that Washington will be making his commitment on June 17 at 3:30 p.m. EST.

Fans split on Golden State Valkyries' new mascot

The Golden State Valkyries' new mascot was unveiled this week — and she's a cutie (to me, at least). Driving the news: Violet, easily identifiable by her round glasses and big grin, is a raven who knows how to break it down on the dance floor. Our Instagram followers reacted with divided fervor. What they're saying:"Instantly iconic," @anoyes commented, while @shaketini said, "I like her glasses!!" "I could see her visiting different areas of the Bay, learning the dances, getting to know all the cultures that make up the Bay Area," @spottedgiraffe2777 added. One of our readers, Margaret R., also wrote in enthusiastically: "I am OBSESSED with Violet. Liberty can't take up all the mascot rizz." (The New York Liberty's mascot is Ellie the Elephant.) Yes, but: Not everyone reacted with cheer. "I feel like it would have been a bit cooler to lean into the actual valkirye theme and maybe ... give her some cool armor or a weapon," @soaphia.g noted. "Too much cute," @garden22nd agreed. "Why is she portrayed as SEXY? ... And not in a cool, swaggy way, but more like in a designed-for-the-male-gaze-Dallas-Cowboys-Cheerleaders style? It's just not right for our team of strong, capable women," @goldenstatehaze commented. Between the lines: Ravens are known as Valkyries' counterparts in Norse mythology and are considered guardians of good fortune.

Georgia football trying to flip Michigan State's best commit

The college football recruiting world never stops as teams are now trying to flip commits so they can add to their recruiting classes. The Georgia Bulldogs are after Michigan State's highest ranked commitment in four-star wide receiver Tyren Wortham. The Booker High School (Florida) product is a target to join Georgia's top ranked recruiting class. The biggest competitor for Michigan State and Georgia is Auburn. 'They want me to come on an in-season visit. UCF has still been on my trail, wanting me to come back to a game. I'm pretty sure Georgia wants me at a game," Wortham talking to Rivals (subscription required). Rivals has Wortham as a four-star wide receiver as the No. 111 overall rated recruit and he is ranked inside the top 20 wide receivers in the 2026 class. Wortham's production was unbelievable this past season. The Michigan State commitment registered 67 catches for 1,360 yards and 17 touchdowns. Georgia is contenders to finish with the top recruiting class in the country. The Bulldogs have either the No. 1 (247Sports) or No. 2 (ESPN, Rivals) recruiting class in the 2026 cycle. CBS Sports analyst Rick Neuheisel names Jackson Arnold his top newcomer

The key to the success for the Auburn Tigers this season on the football field will be the play of quarterback Jackson Arnold. He is looking to rebound from a subpar performance last season with the Oklahoma Sooners where he was benched for some games early in the season. As a freshman in 2024, Arnold threw for 1,421 yards and 12 touchdowns with a completion percentage of 63%. He did not meet the expectations that were placed on him before the season. The struggles were not just with Arnold last season. The Sooners had issues at the offensive line, and Arnold was without his top receivers. Neither should be an issue with the Tigers this season. Arnold will have one of the best groups of receivers, not just in the SEC but in the entire nation. Sophomore Cam Coleman and Georgia Tech transfer Eric Singleton Jr lead the wide receiver room. CBS Sports analyst and former college football head coach Rick Neuheisel sees Arnold as his top newcomer this season. Part of his reasoning is that head coach Hugh Freeze needs Arnold to be successful. 'I think Jackon Arnold is going to have one heck of an impact on war eagle nation', said Neuheisel. If he does have a big impact on the team, that will be good news for Freeze. His first two years as head coach have not been what the fans have expected, with an 11-14 record so far. A big year from Arnold, the offense should result in Freeze staying off any hot seat.
