Devil May Cry and Bayonetta veteran Hideki Kamiya is still leaning on Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami's wisdom at new studio Clovers: "I have always made decisions based on his teachings"
Following his departure from Platinum Games, Hideki Kamiya announced his new studio, 'Clovers,' back in December at The Game Awards 2024, alongside the news that the studio would be teaming up with Capcom to release a follow-up to the cult classic Okami. During Kamiya's original tenure at Capcom, he worked closely with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami at Capcom Production Studio 4, which resulted in him directing Resident Evil 2 and the original version of Resident Evil 4 – which turned into Devil May Cry. Despite the two not having been under the same roof since Mikami finished work on Vanquish in 2010, Kamiya still uses the Resident Evil creator as a source of inspiration years later.
Speaking to Game*Spark (translated by Automaton Media), Kamiya says that Mikami's teachings from his time at Capcom directly impact how he teaches his staff today. "I don't tell the staff, 'This is what Mikami-san would say,' every step of the way," he says. "But in the course of developing games up to now, I have always made decisions based on his teachings, and I have shared them with the production team.
"Back then, we used to call what Mikami taught us the 'spirit of the 4th.'" Kamiya says, adding, "The reason I left PlatinumGames was because the company's way of thinking was gradually shifting towards a modern model of game development that doesn't place importance on the creators' individuality," presumably referencing Platinum's shift to live-service titles like Babylon's Fall (with Kamiya's Project G.G. allegedly being turned into a live-service title during development). Kamiya felt so strongly about this that he didn't care if leaving Platinum marked the end of his creating games, saying, "even if it meant the end of my career as a creator, I couldn't allow myself to kill my soul in order to work in an environment that I didn't agree with."
The Mikami-led Capcom Production Studio 4 was a bastion of creativity at Capcom, giving us the likes of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Killer 7, and this is something that has followed Kamiya throughout his career. Clover Studio – despite only sticking around for three years – made the wild trio of Viewtiful Joe, Okami, and God Hand. The name Clover Studio was an abbreviation of 'creativity lover,' with Kamiya taking that one step (or three steps) further with Clovers, which the director says stands for "Creativity," "Challenge," "Craftsmanship," and "our 4th C…" on the Clovers website.Despite being happy to leave Platinum Games in the past, Kamiya recently said he would love to take another crack at making the canceled Microsoft collab, Scalebound.

RESIDENT EVIL Reboot Director Promises Movie Will Feel Like the Games — GeekTyrant
The Resident Evil franchise has been a staple in the horror gaming world for decades, terrifying fans with everything from classic zombies to creepy mold-infected families. Over the years, Hollywood has tried to adapt the series with mixed results. Now, Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and the upcoming Weapons , is taking a swing at the franchise with a brand-new reboot. While details about the new Resident Evil movie are still under wraps, it's expected to start filming soon and hit theaters next fall. Fans have been curious about what direction Cregger will take, especially since previous adaptations have drifted far from the source material. During an interview with ComicBook, Cregger opened up about why he wanted to take on the project—and his answer should get longtime fans hyped. The filmmaker said: 'Because I love the games. I played all of the games. I played Resident Evil 4 a hundred times through. I'm obsessed with it. And so, I just want to tell a story that feels like it's honoring the experience you get when you play the games. 'I haven't seen the movies, that's just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That's just a playground I just love….I think the movie is going to rip. I think it's going to rip.' It's wild to think Cregger hasn't seen any of the previous Resident Evil films, but honestly, that might work in his favor. The previous movies were financially successful, sure, but they were messy and often unrecognizable to fans of the games. You can see Cregger passion for the series and there's no doubt that he's aiming to capture the real Resident Evil experience on the big screen. He's also hinted that while the movie will take some liberties with the lore, the goal is authenticity. Recent rumors suggest the story might take place on the outskirts of Raccoon City during the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3, as an outbreak plays a big part in the plot. The new Resident Evil movie is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026, and if Cregger's enthusiasm is any indication, this could finally be the adaptation fans have been waiting for.

Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot won't stick to the game's labyrinthine lore
Over its 30 years or so of zombie hordes, Umbrella Corporation lab leaks, and Las Plagas infections, Resident Evil has amassed one of the most expansive and confusing mythologies in horror. At this point, Resident Evil games bounce around their labyrinthine timeline as often as they change gameplay styles. Fittingly, it has an equally obtuse movie mythology, with Paul W.S. Anderson's long-running series following his muse Milla Jovovich and abandoning the source material in favor of his post-apocalyptic whims. Audiences read Anderson's Final Chapter to the series in 2017, leading to a first shot at a reboot, Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, which stuck closer to the games' mythology and we swear came out in 2021. The following year, Netflix released a live-action TV series to join a long-running franchise of Japanese animated movies, a Netflix CG animated series, and a documentary about the unmade George A. Romero adaptation. We have plenty of Resident Evil stuff, and more on the way. Speaking to SFX Magazine [via Bloody Disgusting], director Zach Cregger, who is helming the reboot after finishing his next film, Weapons, has already begun preparing fans for a movie that is nothing like the games. 'I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan,' Cregger said. 'I've played them all. I don't know how many times I've just looped [Resident Evil 4] again and again. I just love it. I'm definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the game. I'm trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.' Still, Cregger says that he doesn't believe he's 'breaking any major rules' by taking 'the title back to its horror roots' with a movie that's more faithful to the tone of 'the initial games,' e.g., more survival horror than a first-person shooting in the Bayou. 'All I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that's compelling,' he continues. 'I know that I'm gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.' 'I will also say, I've never seen a movie like it,' he continued. 'It doesn't jump around like Weapons and Barbarian, but it is still unto itself.' As long as there is a master of unlocking, we'll be fine. Resident Evil infects theaters on September 18, 2026. More from A.V.
