PBA: TNT escapes San Miguel in wild Game 1 finish
The Tropang 5G punished the Beermen with their torrid shooting from beyond the arc, but went cold in the last period amid a Beermen rampage.
Still, TNT was able to hang on to draw first blood in the best-of-seven affair thanks to a clutch RR Pogoy triple and an offensive basketball interference call on a dunk attempt by Mo Tautuaa that would have given the Beermen a one-point lead in the last six seconds of the game.
The victory placed TNT just three wins away from clinching a rare Grand Slam.
Pogoy, who was returning from a hamstring injury he sustained in the semifinals, returned with a bang, scoring 23 points, including a perfect 2-of-2 shooting clip from the four-point line.
Jordan Heading supplied the help with 19 points, six assists, and three rebounds while Calvin Oftana and Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser chipped in 13 markers apiece.
Pogoy and Oftana went off early and helped TNT establish a huge 61-42 halftime lead and even stretched that to as big as 24 when Oftana fired another triple for a 67-43 cushion early in the third.
But the Beermen refused to let it it be a done deal that early for the Tropang 5G.
After a Heading basket that led to a 92-74 lead, San Miguel mounted a huge 19-0 rampage led by the collective efforts of June Mar Fajardo, Don Trollano, and CJ Perez as they regained a 93-92 cushion in the dying minutes.
Ganuelas-Rosser then scored on a dunk before SMB spark plug Chris Ross knocked down a triple to give SMB a 96-94 lead with 1:44 left in the game.
TNT got back a 97-96 lead after a Pogoy three-pointer.
This was answered by a Tautuaa basket. The big man missed a dunk attempt, but got the lucky bounce with the ball, giving San Miguel a one-point cushion, 98-97.
However, during the next dead-ball, the game officials made a review of the play, resulting in the basket being waved off as it was ruled offensive basket interference.
With the score back to 97-96 in their favor, the Tropang 5G sealed the win with a pair of freebies from Oftana and another defensive stop to finish.

Venus Williams part of star-filled U.S. Open mixed-doubles event
The mixed-doubles field at the U.S. Open, which begins next month in New York, will be a star-studded event. The United States Tennis Association announced Tuesday the eight teams receiving direct entries into the tournament, as well as six wild-card entrants. Two more teams will take part as wild cards. Cheers! San Miguel's Tiongson, Cahilig, Rosales, Calma celebrate first PBA title
It took them a while, but finally, they can call themselves PBA champions. Last Friday, Juami Tiongson, Andreas Cahilig, Kris Rosales, and JM Calma relished their first title as the San Miguel Beermen defeated TNT in Game 6 of the PBA Philippine Cup finals. Tiongson, Cahilig, and Rosales have been in the PBA for quite a while. Tiongson was drafted in 2014, while Rosales made his PBA debut in 2016. Cahilig, meanwhile, entered the league in 2017. "It means more to me. Obviously, with everything I went through in my career. Baka nung nag-start ang career ko, nawala ako sa PBA," Tiongson said. "I made it back and glory to God, and hopefully, win more championships," he added. ? Cahilig, who was also Tiongson's teammate back in Terrafirma, echoed the same sentiment. "It feels very good, I'm very happy. It's been a hard couple of years but it finally paid out," he said. Although Cahilig was able to play in two games only because of his hyperextended knee, the Filipino-Swedish big man said he is now more motivated after winning his first title. Calvin Oftana doubtful for Gilas Pilipinas in FIBA Asia Cup
Calvin Oftana's health status puts his availability for Gilas Pilipinas in doubt ahead of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. National team head coach Tim Cone revealed on Monday that Oftana is uncertain to suit up after the sharpshooter sustained injuries during TNT's finals series against San Miguel in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup. Oftana hurt both of his ankles in the grueling finals clash as the Tropang 5G eventually fell to the Beermen in six games. "We're not sure about Calvin. The medical reports are that he might be out a little bit longer," Cone said following Gilas' 103-98 win over the Macau Black Bears in a friendly encounter at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. "We were given a medical report from his camp so we're not sure if he's going to be available for the whole tournament." Cone, though, isn't worried about the manpower shortage with his trusted wards in Troy Rosario and RJ Abarrientos ready to step in whenever necessary. "We're gonna try to address that today or tomorrow and we got Troy and RJ in the wings to step in if necessary," Cone added. Cone also added that June Mar Fajardo, who sat out the send-off showdown against Macau, will take another three-day off before rejoining physical activities once they land in Jeddah, where they will figure in another friendly game against Jordan before the Asia Cup proper. "But June Mar, we expect him to start practicing when we land in Jeddah," Cone shared. "He changes the game for us, we have to play a different way with June Mar on the floor and that's the only concern because we haven't had practice time with him.
