Sabah Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Isnin Aliasnih, said councillors must actively participate in policymaking and problem-solving to ensure effective service delivery. His speech, delivered by Kunak assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif, emphasized the need for consistent involvement in council meetings and adherence to local by-laws. Isnin also highlighted the importance of integrity, transparency, and impactful ideas to align development with the aspirations of Kunak residents. Shahelmey weighs GRS ticket after BN door ‘closes'

Kuala Lumpur: Sabah deputy chief minister Shahelmey Yahya is weighing the possibility of contesting under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, with his chances of standing again as a Barisan Nasional candidate possibly over. Shahelmey, who currently holds the Tanjung Keramat seat, said his decision would ultimately hinge on feedback from voters in the constituency. Advertisement 'I need to listen to the people in the area because they are the ones who will be voting. There is also the local machinery whose views I must consider. 'If the feedback is convincing, then we will make a decision,' he told FMT when met at the Parliament building. GRS chairman Hajiji Noor had earlier expressed confidence that Shahelmey could defend the seat under the coalition's banner. Shahelmey first won Tanjung Keramat on a BN ticket in 2020. However, his ties with BN have soured since March 2023, when Umno suspended him for six years for refusing to support the party's move to topple Hajiji. The rift widened last year after Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin named Sabah Umno election director Jeffrey Noh as the coalition's candidate for Tanjung Keramat, effectively sidelining Shahelmey. '(It's as if) the door has closed,' Shahelmey said of his BN prospects. He said there had been no discussions with Sabah BN or coalition chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding his candidacy. Shahelmey said his decision on whether to contest on a GRS ticket was further complicated by his position as Umno's Putatan MP. Under the anti-hopping law, he risks losing his parliamentary seat if he contests under a party other than BN as he won Putatan on a BN ticket in the 15th general election. 'That matter is quite technical. Sabah expands education aid with 16 initiatives

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said the programmes cover schools, parent–teacher associations and students, including free MUET exam fees worth RM1 million annually and subsidised flights for Sabahans studying in Peninsular Malaysia. Guan Eng's undersea tunnel trial postponed as key witness unable to testify

Kuala Lumpur: A witness in Lim Guan Eng's undersea tunnel trial told the sessions court today that he was unable to testify, citing trauma after being attacked by 10 men in an armed robbery earlier this month. Businessman G Gnanaraja said he was still recovering from the incident. Advertisement 'I am still traumatised. It is not that I don't want to cooperate (with the court), but I want to ensure my safety first,' he said. Trial judge Azura Alwi said it was the duty of the police and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to do everything in their power to ensure Gnanaraja's safety. Deputy public prosecutor Mahadi Abdul Jumaat then told the court that as Gnanaraja was not mentally fit, they would call investigating officer Zulhilmi Ramli as the next witness. The hearing continues on Aug 27. Lim is standing trial on charges of using his position as then Penang chief minister to ask Zarul Ahmad Zulkifli for a 10% cut of the profits from the undersea tunnel project and accepting a total of RM3.3 million in kickbacks between 2011 and 2017 from the businessman. He is also accused of two counts of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land. On Aug 7, Gnanaraja, a key witness in the trial, suffered injuries to his face and hand after being attacked by 10 men at his home.
