No Respect For Jalen Hurts? NFL Execs, Coaches Rank Goff and Herbert Ahead of Super Bowl MVP

Yahoo11 hours ago
This will surely rankle the Philadelphia Eagles fan base. Fifty NFL coaches and executives rated quarterbacks like Jared Goff, Justin Herbert and Jayden Daniels ahead of Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts in The Athletic's NFL QB Tiers.
Hurts was tied for ninth with Houston Texans' C.J. Stroud and considered a Tier 2 quarterback. The signal-callers listed ahead of Hurts include: Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Matthew Stafford, Daniels, Herbert and Goff. (Mahomes, Burrow, Allen, Jackson and Stafford were listed as Tier 1 quarterbacks.)
According to The Athletic, a Tier 1 quarterback 'can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure-passing situations. He has no real holes in his game.' A Tier 2 QB is described as 'can carry his team sometimes but not as consistently. He can handle pure-passing situations in doses and/or possesses other dimensions that are special enough to elevate him above Tier 3. He has a hole or two in his game.'
Despite winning a Super Bowl and being named MVP, reaching another Super Bowl, earning two Pro Bowl selections, finishing as MVP runner-up in 2022 and going 46-20 in 66 starts with the Birds, Hurts still doesn't get the respect he deserves from those 'in-the-know' around the league.
The Athletic's Mike Sando points out that Hurts had the lowest average tier vote for any QB coming off a Super Bowl championship since Eagles quarterback Nick Foles.
'Hurts is always a tough one for me,' a former GM told The Athletic. 'I think he is a 3. They are very talented around him, and he is not as consistent as a passer. They have a strong defense, great playmakers, great offensive line. He is able to function that way. But I don't know that he is the one that elevates them. That is not a slight.
'He is a good player. But putting him in that 2 category, I don't see that.'
A current general manager added: 'This is going to sound like I don't like him, but I do. Just by the definition, I feel he is more of a 3. Am I on an island with that?'
While Goff, Herbert and Daniels threw for more yards and touchdowns than Hurts in 2024, it ultimately comes down to playoff performance. Hurts is 6-3, with two Super Bowl appearances and one championship, while the other three are a combined 6-8 with no Super Bowl wins. In fact, Herbert has only appeared in the playoffs twice and lost both games.
In the end, Hurts doesn't care about these rankings as it all comes down to what he does on the field. But Eagles fans will defend their quarterback to the death.Related Headlines

Albies' double in eighth inning secures Braves' 4-3 win over Mets

NEW YORK (AP) — Ozzie Albies homered, drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the eighth inning, and hit an RBI single as the Atlanta Braves beat the slumping New York Mets 4-3 on Thursday night. Bryce Elder (5-9) allowed three runs (two earned) over seven innings for the Braves, who are 7-3 against the Mets this season. Raisel Iglesias earned his 17th save with a perfect ninth. Albies went deep against starter Kodai Senga in the third and hit an RBI single off Tyler Rogers in the sixth. Michael Harris II tied the game with an RBI double off Ryan Helsley (3-3) in the eighth before scoring on Albies' hit to deep right. The Mets have lost 13 of their last 15 games and their lead over the idle Cincinnati Reds in the race for the final wild-card spot shrunk to a half-game. Francisco Lindor hit a third-inning solo homer and Brandon Nimmo (sacrifice fly) and Pete Alonso (single) had back-to-back RBIs to give the Mets a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Senga gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings. Key moment Dylan Lee struck out Juan Soto on three pitches before retiring Nimmo on a grounder to strand Lindor at first in the eighth. Key stats Albies has 81 RBIs against the Mets, his most against any opponent. Lindor and Soto stole a base apiece as the Mets extended their streak of consecutive steals without being caught to a team-record 36. Up next The Mets remain home Friday, when LHP Sean Manaea (1-1, 4.33 ERA) is scheduled to start the series opener against the Seattle Mariners and RHP Luis Castillo (8-6, 3.19). The Braves continue a six-game road trip on Friday as RHP Hurston Waldrep (2-0, 1.54 takes the mound against LHP Joey Cantillo (3-2, 4.11) and the Cleveland Guardians. ___ AP MLB:

Phillies plan to use 6-man rotation with Aaron Nola's return from IL, says manager Rob Thomson

Aaron Nola is scheduled to be activated from the injured list and start for the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday against the Washington Nationals. With Nola's return, manager Rob Thomson told reporters on Thursday that the Phillies will go with a six-man rotation for at least one turn. Jesús Luzardo started the series opener on Thursday with Zack Wheeler scheduled for Friday and Taijuan Walker — who Thomson said was the No. 6 starter — going on Saturday. After Nola starts on Sunday, the rest of the rotation will line up with Ranger Suárez starting against the Seattle Mariners on Monday, followed by Cristopher Sánchez on Tuesday. Thomson's decision might look smarter after Luzardo gave up three runs on four hits and three walks in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Nationals. Suárez has also struggled recently, allowing five or more runs in three of his past five starts. In Thomson's view, the starters' workload is wearing them down. "Just getting some of these guys some extra rest because we've been grinding on them pretty hard all year," Thomson said, via the Associated Press. "The one downside to it is you've got to take somebody out of your bullpen, so you're a little short there but we'll just have to figure it out." Philadelphia leads MLB with 687 1/3 innings from its starting pitchers. Sánchez tops Phillies starters with 150 2/3 innings, while Wheeler has logged 144 2/3 frames. After Thursday's start, Luzardo is at 139 innings, followed by Suárez with 112 1/3. Nola returning to the rotation should help relieve some of those innings. However, he may take a while before he can build up a higher workload. Nola hasn't pitched for the Phillies since May 14 after suffering a sprained right ankle that he initially tried to pitch through before going on the IL. That may be why he compiled a 6.16 ERA and 1-7 record before being sidelined. In his three rehab starts, Nola collected a 2.19 ERA in 12 1/3 innings with 17 strikeouts — including 11 in his final appearance. At 69-52, the Phillies go into the weekend with a five-game lead over the New York Mets (64-57) for first place in the NL East. The Mets lost to the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, 4-3.
