Mumbai Coastal Road to remain open 24 hours from Aug 15; CM Fadnavis warns against turning the stretch into a racetrack

Time of India5 hours ago
Mumbai: From Friday, the Mumbai Coastal Road will be open round the clock, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Thursday, alongside his deputies Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, during the virtual inauguration of the road's promenade, cycle track, and pedestrian subways.
The road, so far operational from 7am to midnight, will now be accessible 24 hours.
At the event, Fadnavis issued a strong caution to motorists — especially young drivers — against using the high-speed stretch for reckless stunts. "We've observed some motorists trying to show off their driving skills on the coastal road. This not only puts their own lives at risk but also endangers others. The entire stretch is under CCTV surveillance and if anyone indulges in dangerous driving, a notice will be sent and police will visit your home," he warned.

Welcoming the CM's comments, Worli resident Viren Shah said, "For the past couple of months, speeding on the coastal road has meant loud engine noise, during the night hours. I welcome the decision to keep the coastal road operational 24x7, but fear it could now increase noise pollution as many drivers seem to enjoy the thrill of speeding, especially in high-end loud sports cars. While the speeding may be happening in the day too, it probably goes unnoticed as many residents are either at work or other noises drown out the traffic sounds.

Fadnavis said that the 5.25km promenade, which will eventually extend to the proposed 7.5km, includes a cycle track and dedicated facilities for pedestrians. "Special care has been taken to ensure the promenade is fully accessible to persons with disabilities," he added.
Fadnavis acknowledged the inconvenience faced by walkers on Marine Drive and Worli during construction, but said the finished project would more than make up for it.
To mark the inauguration, BMC allowed a few cyclists to make use of the cycling track on Thursday.

Road accidents claim 5,975 lives in state in six months of 2025

Mysuru: In the first six months of 2025, as many as 5,975 people died in road accidents across the state. Karnataka recorded 21,937 accidents in this time frame, and as many as 27,456 people were injured in these accidents. According to the data shared by transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, in response to a question raised by MLC KS Naveen, in the past five and a half years, 60,115 people died in 2.13 lakh road accidents in the state. In Mysuru district alone, 1,730 accidents were reported from Jan 1 and June 30. A total of 329 people lost their lives and 1,998 persons were injured. The highest number of deaths in this time period was reported from Bengaluru (390), followed by Tumakuru (367). According to MLC Naveen, Karnataka has the biggest road network in the country. "The money collected for road safety awareness is wasted on post-accidental interventions and ineffective awareness campaigns. Tamil Nadu govt was able to bring down road accidents through an effective awareness campaign and interventions a few years ago. But in Karnataka, we failed to bring down the accidents," he said. Every road accident has a long-lasting impact, and causes a huge loss for the SGDP," he explained. Lakshman SG, a road safety activist said that the need of the hour is more enforcement drives during night, and early morning hours. "Drunk driving on the state and national highways are more, hence vigilance outside the city limits is required to make our roads safe," he said. Continue drive against rash driving till a solution is found, HC tells Kochi police

Kochi: High court on Thursday asked the Kochi city police to continue its drives to curb the menace of rash driving by heavy vehicles on a daily basis until a solution is found to end it. "No doubt, various reasons are attributed to this deleterious tendency on the roads, but none of them would be of any avail if someone loses their life, as seen in the case of a young boy who was crushed under a bus near Town Hall, Kochi," the court said. "Losing a life on account of a bad road or reckless driving is the most unfortunate event that can happen, particularly to the family, and ought not to be simply relegated to statistics thereafter," the bench of Justice Devan Ramachandran emphasised. HC was considering a batch of petitions seeking judicial intervention in view of the deplorable condition of roads across Kochi. The high-ranking police officers present in court provided information about certain proposals to avoid 'serpentine queues' and long traffic jams by modulating traffic and modifying road conditions. Specific references were made to Vyttila Junction, Chathiath Road-Goshree Bridge junction, Edappally Church area and Palarivattom Junction on the highway. HC observed that some urgency would be apposite with the Onam season approaching. It also cited a recent accident in Thrissur that claimed the life of a young man in front of his mother's eyes. 'Bad road is a killer' Previously, HC had directed local body and PWD engineers to conduct an audit of the safety and quality of roads under their control. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo On Thursday, senior govt pleader K V Manoj Kumar sought a month's time to file the audit report. Allowing the request, HC stated that the right to a motorable road, without any doubt, is now a constitutional right because the right to travel falls within the ambit of a fundamental right. A bad road, HC noted, is not only a hindrance to travel but can also be a killer, as seen in various past instances. Prima facie, the engineers have the responsibility to survey and maintain surveillance to ensure that no life is lost and no injury is caused on account of potholes or other dangerous conditions on the roads, the court reminded. The annual highway toll pass of Rs 3,000 for private cars, jeeps, and vans will be rolled out from Friday. Independence Day 2025 Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji gave India its own currency Swadeshi 2.0: India is no longer just a market, it's a maker Ahead of the roll out, the government has opened the pre-booking window for FASTag-based annual passes that allow users to cross up to 200 highway toll booths on a single recharge of Rs 3,000 within a year. A dedicated link for activation of the annual pass is available on the Rajmarg Yatra app . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More The link would also be available on the official websites of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways ( MoRTH ). The annual pass will be applicable only for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. It will allow seamless travel across National Highways without the need for repeated recharging of FASTag cards for toll payments. Live Events In closed tolling highways such as Delhi-Mumbai Expressway - where toll collection occurs exclusively at exit points - a single trip includes both entry and exit points. On the other hand, on open tolling routes like Delhi-Chandigarh, each toll plaza crossing would constitute a separate trip. The pass can be recharged again once the 200-trip limit in a year is reached. According to the MoRTH, those who already have a FASTag on their vehicles will not need to purchase a new FASTag. The annual pass will be valid only at National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) fee plazas. At fee plazas on Expressways, State Highways (SH) managed by state governments or local bodies, the FASTag will operate as a regular one, and applicable user fee charges may apply. FASTag - the electronic toll collection system - uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to automatically deduct toll charges from a prepaid account linked to the vehicle. Over 10.1 crore FASTags were issued till December 1, 2024, according to the road transport ministry's 2024 year-end review.
