Plans for £2.7m transformation of Troon's pool submitted

The transformation of Troon Swimming Pool is a step closer following the submission of a major planning application. The £2.7m project aims to secure the venue's future as a modern, accessible hub for community sport, health, and wellbeing. Architects Holmes Miller, set out proposals for a significant extension, full internal refurbishment, and external recladding of the council-owned facility on Jubilee Road. Background works have been ongoing, through engagement with council leisure services, staff, and user representatives, in a bid to ensure the plans are linked to the wishes of the community and operational priorities. One of the most notable changes is a dramatic expansion of the 'dry-side' faciilities on offer. The existing fitness gym, currently just 95m² and described as small, awkwardly shaped, and poorly suited to modern use, would be replaced by a 260m² purpose-designed space. The new gym will feature cardio, strength, and free-weight zones, contemporary interior finishes, improved lighting, and enhanced ventilation to create a bright, energising environment. Alongside it, a dedicated multi-purpose fitness studio will be introduced to cater for group exercise classes, functional training, and other flexible activities – a provision currently missing from the facility. Council officers say this expansion is intended to meet growing community demand for high-quality gym and studio spaces, increase participation in fitness activities, and boost the venue's commercial viability. Another key part of the plans is a complete overhaul of the changing facilities. The current pool side changing areas – split into separate male and female spaces – have been dubbed outdated, inefficient, and unwelcoming. These would be replaced by a modern, mixed-sex 'changing village' that the developers say will improve privacy and inclusivity for all users, including families, people with disabilities, and older adults. The reconfigured plan will also reduce awkward spaces, improve circulation, and clearly separate wet and dry activity zones. A new dry changing area will be created specifically for gym and studio users, providing appropriate support for the expanded fitness facilities. Externally, the pool building will be reclad to improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance needs, and give the venue a modern appearance. The proposals reference the town's distinctive use of red and cream sandstone, suggesting a modern interpretation of this palette to harmonise the extension with its surroundings while giving the building a stronger civic identity. The main entrance and frontage will be redesigned to create a more inviting arrival point for visitors and a clearer connection to the town's public realm. Troon Swimming Pool has been a fixture in the town for decades, opening in the early 1990s to replace the outdoor swimming 'pond' on the seafront, which first welcomed bathers in 1931. The outdoor pool was demolished in the late 1980s, but its adjacent Italian Rock Garden remains as a public amenity. The current indoor facility sits just a short walk from the seafront, close to public transport links, and is well-used by both residents and visitors. A modest 90m² extension was added in the early 2000s to create the present gym, but demand for fitness provision has since outgrown the space. South Ayrshire Council say the redevelopment aims to: Enhance the fitness offer to support health and wellbeing Improve the visitor experience Ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all users Deliver a sustainable, energy-efficient building through fabric and service upgrades If approved, the refurbishment and extension would be delivered while maintaining the building's core function as a swimming and leisure centre. The council says the investment will help secure the site's long-term viability in an increasingly competitive leisure market and ensure Troon residents continue to benefit from high-quality public sports facilities. UK pasta chain with 'carbonara of dreams' is expanding with 300 restaurants plan

When the Pasta Evangelists team appeared on Dragons' Den in 2018, the dragons told them they were 'delusional' and that their idea was a 'disaster'. Flash forward to 2025 and the pasta company has just revealed major expansion plans, with a goal of having 100 restaurants across the UK in the next five years and 300 globally in the longer-term. The company's first dedicated restaurant, a pasta emporium, opened in Richmond last summer with self-serve wine machines, a chef handmaking pasta in the window and some delicious dishes. Following that, they opened seven other restaurants in areas such as Greenwich, Guildford and Manchester Airport. Now co-founders Alessandro Savelli, Finn Lagun and Chris Rennoldson are looking to invest more than £30 million in even more locations. The team started Pasta Evangelists in a basement in London in 2016 and it went on to become a successful delivery business. The aim was to bring fresh pasta, just like Alessandro's Italian nonna used to make, to British kitchens. They've since gone on to launch 47 takeaway units, a pasta bar in Harrods as well as pasta academies where they share their secrets. Along the way they've garnered support from top chefs like Prue Leith and Gordon Ramsay and online fans have hailed the food as 'incredible', 'spectacular' and 'delicious'. The chain's carbonara in particular is a hit with customers, who have claimed it's 'the best carbonara' and the 'carbonara of dreams'. Speaking about the expansion plans, Alessandro told the Times he wants Pasta Evangelists to become 'the UK's fastest-growing, casual dining spot'. More Trending The plan is to 'flip' a number of the dark kitchens they already own – these are spaces where professional food is prepared and cooked solely for delivery or takeaway purposes, with no store-front or dine-in area. The business will also be looking to specifically target the South of England, Midlands and Scotland in the UK for new restaurants, creating up to 1,500 new jobs. F1 eyeing reverse grids and one other major change as talks with drivers planned

Changes to the Sprint format are being eyed by Formula 1 and its chief executive Stefano Domenicali who said he wants to discuss his ideas with teams and drivers Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali wants to pitch the idea of reverse grid races. The Italian said he wants to hold talks with teams and drivers about potentially bringing in the format, which is already used in Sprint races in Formula 2 and the other FIA-sanctioned feeder series, Formula 3. ‌ The Sprint has been part of F1 for the last few years and, despite some opposition to the format, chiefs have doubled-down. There were three Sprint races in a year initially, but that total has been doubled to six meaning a quarter of the 24 events held per year now use the format. ‌ And it seems the sport is not yet done with its tinkering. According to chief executive Domenicali, the idea of introducing reverse grids for the short-form races is something that could be introduced in the coming years. ‌ The former Ferrari chief also suggested he is keen to explore the idea of further increasing the number of Sprint races held per year. "I do believe there are possibilities to extend two things, which we need to discuss, both with the drivers and the teams, and, of course, with the FIA," he told The Race. "There are: Can we apply that [Sprint schedules] with more races? And is this the right formula to have the possibility to have a reverse grid, as we are doing with F2 and F3? These are points of discussion. "I think that we are getting there to be mature to make sure that this point will be tackled seriously with the teams. The vibes to progress in this direction are definitely growing, and therefore I am ready to present and to discuss not only more sprints... but if there are new formats, new ideas." Reverse grid races have, for several years, been used at both F2 and F3 level. In the current format, every event in both feeder series features a Sprint race in which a certain number of positions are reversed from the result of qualifying. In F2, the top 10 qualifying positions are reversed for the Sprint race. That means the driver who qualifies on pole position for the main feature race, which gives out the most points, starts the Sprint 10th. In F3, because there are more cars in the field, the top 12 positions are reversed. But Domenicali said he is keen to continue tinkering with the format in a bid to provide the best entertainment. He added: "We are open for that, because I think that is the right thing – to listen to our fans, to try to create something and not to be worried to do mistakes. The one who believes to do no mistakes doesn't do anything new."
