Girlfriend squeals on boyfriend involved in ‘rentangay' modus
Authorities have arrested a man allegedly involved in stealing vehicles using the 'rentangay' modus in Las Piñas City after his girlfriend reported him.
In Emil Sumangil's exclusive report on '24 Oras' on Monday, alias 'Lawrence' was supposed to meet up with his girlfriend when the police arrested him.
Despite resistance, the Philippine National Police - Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) successfully brought Lawrence to Camp Crame.
He was taken into custody under an arrest warrant for multiple charges such as carnapping, illegal possession of firearms, and violation of the Anti-Fencing Law.
According to the police, Lawrence allegedly engaged in a 'rentangay' modus, a scheme where the car thief rents a vehicle but doesn't return it.
'We are appealing kung kayo'y naging biktima ng taong nito, narito ang HPG para mag assist at para matulungan ang ating mga kababayan na madagdagan pa ng kaso para sa taong nito,' PNP-HPG spokesperson Police Lieutenant Nadame Malang said.
(We are appealing to the victims of this person. PNP-HPG is here to assist you in filing charges against him.)
Meanwhile, Lawrence told GMA Integrated News that he could not believe that his girlfriend snitched on him.
'Natakot siya na madamay (she was afraid of getting involved),' Lawrence said.
He also admitted that he has been using illegal drugs and appealed to the victims to withdraw the cases filed against him.
'Pa rehab na rin ako. Nagulat ako. Kung papayag siya na aregulahin, mabalik yung motor, aregluhin po namin,' Lawrence said.
(I'm willing to undergo rehabilitation. I was caught off guard. If the victim is willing to settle and get his motorcycle back, we will return it.) —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News

Animal welfare group protests alleged maltreatment in Manila Zoo
Some members of an animal welfare group staged a rally at the Luneta Park to raise the issue of alleged malnourished animals at the Manila Zoo, according to a report on "24 Oras" Thursday. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said the animals at the zoo are being fed but they seem to be maltreated because of their situation beause they are not in their natural habitat and they live in small enclosures. PETA added that using a zoo to educate children is not acceptable. GMA News is getting a reaction from the Manila City government, which manages the Manila Zoo. The maltreatment of animals is strictly prohibited under the Animal Welfare Act. According to Republic Act No. 10631 or the Philippine Animal Welfare Act of 2013, any person who is found to torture, hurt or maltreat animals may be imprisoned for up to three years and fined for up to P250,000. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

89 foreigners llinked to POGO, scam hubs deported
At least 89 foreigners who are allegedly involved in a scam hub in the Philippines have been deported, according to the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC). According to Saleema Refran's Thursday report on '24 Oras,' 77 Vietnamese and 12 South Koreans were deported as part of PAOCC's efforts to decogest its detention facility in Pasay City, as some are getting sick and in compliance with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s order to hasten the deportation of arrested foreigners. 'Yung temporary detention center natin dito sa Pasay kasi almost 800 pa rin po yung nakakulong natin diyan. And kailangan bawasan na natin. So unti-unti, last month nakapag-deport na rin po kami ng 100 plus and now magde-deport po tayo ng 120 plus,' PAOCC executive director Gilbert Cruz said. (We have almost 800 foreigners in our detention center in Pasay, and we need to decrease the population. So last month, we deported over 100 foreigners, and we will deport 120 more foreigners.) Some foreigners will also be deported this month, depending on the Bureau of Immigration's release of documents and clearances from the National Bureau of Investigation. Cruz also attended the dialogue between the Philippines and the Criminal Police Department of Vietnam to strengthen the cooperation of the two countries in the fight against illegal offshore gaming and related crimes. — Mariel Celine Serquiña/BAP, GMA Integrated News

Senate OKs anti-POGO bill on second reading
The Senate approved on second reading a bill banning Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) in the country. Senate Bill 2868 or the Anti-POGO Bill, declared offshore gaming operations in the Philippines as unlawful. 'I look forward na ma adopt na ito ng Senado yung batas po at yung committee report, I really felt na ito ay one-two power punch against POGO,' said Senator Risa Hontiveros, chair of the Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality. Among the amendments in the measure are the Bureau of Immigration's mandate to deport foreign nationals directly back to their country. Meanwhile, maximum penalties were imposed on government officials found engaging in POGO-related activities. In 2024, authorities discovered some POGO hubs engaging in human trafficking and physical and sexual abuse. This includes POGO hubs in Bambam, Tarlac and Porac, Pampanga. This led to the arrest of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo, also identified as Guo Hua Ping, Guo, for alleged involvement in the illegal activities of a POGO hub in her town. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/LDF, GMA Integrated News
