According to Poornima, basmati rice causes no harm to your digestive health. In fact, it is generally considered easy to digest because it contains a lower amount of starch compared to other rice varieties. A lower starch content means that the rice breaks down faster, making it gentler on the digestive system. She further explains that basmati rice is high in fibre, which can promote better gut health by supporting regular bowel movements.
Is White Basmati Rice Better Than Brown Basmati Rice?
While both white and brown basmati rice are beneficial for digestive health, Poornima recommends opting for the former. This is because white rice has its outer husk removed, making it easier for the body to digest. So, if you're someone who has a sensitive stomach or digestive issues like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), choose white rice over brown rice. You can consume brown rice too, but remember to do so in moderation.
Is Basmati Rice Higher In Carbohydrates Compared To Regular Rice?
Not necessarily. Basmati rice and regular rice have similar carbohydrate content. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), 100 grams of cooked white rice contains about 28-30 grams of carbohydrates, while 100 grams of cooked basmati rice contains around 25-28 grams of carbohydrates.
Does Basmati Rice Have A High Glycaemic Index?
No, basmati rice has a relatively low to moderate glycaemic index (GI). The GI of basmati rice ranges from 50 to 58, depending on the type and preparation method. This means basmati rice is less likely to cause significant spikes in blood sugar levels compared to other types of rice varieties.

In order to make sure you have healthy bowel movement in place, Dr Yegurla recommended these 5 lifestyle tweaks: 'Ingest a diet with lots of fiber that includes fruit, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains,' said Dr Yegurla, adding that people must drink plenty of water during the day so that stools can be soft and make the process of passing them easier. 'One of the options is to think about the consumption of probiotics, chief examples of which are found in yogurt, sauerkraut, and kefir to name a few,' he added. Consistent physical activity can keep your digestive system working well and increase your likelihood of going to the bathroom regularly. 'Make an effort to go to the bathroom at the same time each day. It will help if you train your body to pass stools consistently,' advised the doctor. He shared that a person's body reacts individually when exposed to various types of food, and adjustments should be made as appropriate, as some foods may also cause constipation or diarrhea. 'If you are under too much stress or anxiety, even your digestive system suffers. It is possible to reduce these symptoms when you learn meditation and find out how to relax through yoga. When you feel you have to poop, go immediately rather than postponing it since delaying may cause constipation,' shared Dr Yegurla. Dr Vikas Jindal, consultant, dept of gastroenterology, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi pointed out that if you happen to experience irregular bowel movements despite making these lifestyle changes, it may be indicative of underlying issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hypothyroidism, or a dietary imbalance. 'Seek medical advice if symptoms are accompanied by severe pain, blood in stools, or unexplained weight loss, as these could signal more serious conditions,' he advised. Dr Rahul Dubbaka, Consultant, gastroenterology, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, further mentioned that over-the-counter laxatives, bulk-forming agents, and stimulants are popular solutions to this problem nowadays. But while they can help relieve the condition, one should always use them with caution and only under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Live Events Wellness startup Biopeak has raised $3 million in seed funding from Claypond Capital—the family office of Manipal Group chairman Ranjan Pai—Accel's Prashanth Prakash, and Zerodha's Bengaluru-based startup has launched its first longevity clinic and plans to expand to other metro cities in the coming year. Biopeak offers a personalised preventive healthcare service, combining diagnostics, AI, and concierge-style care to predict health risks and craft tailored intervention plans.'We offer solutions that are predictive, not reactive,' cofounder and CEO Rishi Pardal told ET.
