Deadpool creator cuts ties with Marvel after Deadpool and Wolverine ‘embarrassment'

Independent12-02-2025
Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has cut ties with Marvel after expressing disappointment with his alleged treatment at the premiere of the latest film.
The artist and writer is the brains behind the foul-mouthed anti-hero, and has a working relationship with the comic book publishers lasting more than 30 years.
But he felt sidelined at the New York premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, the first Deadpool film to be released since Disney acquired Fox, and has opened up about his perceived experience.
According to Liefeld, he felt ignored by Disney bosses, including Marvel Studios head Kevin Fiege, at the July 2024 event and was upset to discover he and his family had not been invited to the premiere afterparty.
Speaking on his podcast Robservations, Liefeld claimed: 'It was meant to embarrass, diminish, defeat me.
'At some point, you go, 'I've received the message, and the message is clear.''
Liefeld, who receives large revenue streams for the character he created in 1991, revealed that, one month before the film's release, he requested more involvement with the marketing and promotion.
He also wanted a special credit different to the standard one given to comic book creators at the end of the film – noting that his request stemmed from Marvel's decision to give Roy Thomas a Wolverine co-creator status alongside Len Wein and John Romita, Sr.
He wrote in the email: 'Marvel's treatment of creators has never been their strength. Without the worlds, the characters and the concepts that we create – and in this specific case, the world of Deadpool – there are no films to shoot. No blockbusters to distribute. … I am not the easy button at Staples. I am the human imagination behind it all.'
Liefeld claimed that his response did not get received in the way he was after, tweeting: 'My reps were screamed at today 'We are NOT Fox!' Tell me about it. Also hung up on.'

When the status of a third Deadpool film was unclear, the comic book creator, who became one of Marvel's most lucrative publishers in the 1990s, previously expressed the belief that Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds 'should be steering the ship and just completely handed the reins' to the franchise.

Selena Gomez bares her toned stomach in sultry backyard photo ahead of wedding to Benny Blanco

Selena Gomez showed off her toned midriff and flashed her sparkly engagement ring in a sultry snap over the weekend. On Saturday, the 33-year-old actress took to her Instagram Story to share a photo of herself posing in her backyard and pulled up her white T-shirt to showcase her abs. She dressed in comfortable loungewear as she soaked in the sun outside at her mansion nearby her pool. The Only Murders in the Building star wore a distressed, white T-shirt paired with matching sweatpants and a glamorous makeup look. Her dark brunette tresses were styled into a slicked back bun, and her beauty was highlighted by rosy pink blush and brown eyeliner. Her post comes just days after she revealed her fresh-faced beauty as she stepped out with her fiancé Benny Blanco for a romantic dinner date on Friday night. Standing directly underneath a ray of sunshine peeking through the trees, she smoldered for the camera and lifted the bottom of her shirt with her bejeweled hands. In her recent grid post, she also included a similar photo wearing the same outfit and standing in the same setting as she stuck her tongue out with her best friend. Two days earlier, she shared photos of her and Blanco on a double date with Logan Lerman and his fiancée Analuisa Corrigan. She also included a photo of her and her younger sister Gracie at her birthday party last month. In her compilation of recent snapshots, she also left little to the imagination when she shared a sultry mirror selfie. The jaw-dropping photo showed the star posing in a semi-sheer camisole with the straps pulled down low and no bra underneath her top. In her comments section, her fiancé swooned over her and wrote: 'wait ... i'm gonna marry u.' The pair first confirmed their romance in December 2023 and got engaged a year later. Late last year, the Who Says singer took to Instagram to announce their engagement as she showed off her sparkling marquise diamond ring, which is worth an estimated $1 million. 'Forever starts now,' she gushed in her post after Blanco popped the question. Last month, Gomez started giving hints about how wedding planning is going for her and her fiancé as she opened up about her preferences for their big day. In July, she used her Rare Beauty brand's TikTok account to spill details about the unexpected dessert she wants to serve on her wedding day. 'My preferred dessert would be biscuits and gravy,' the Texas native revealed. 'My Nana's biscuits and gravy. That sounds like dessert to me.' She also said in the undated video: 'Whenever that day comes, I do know I don't want a big cake. I think I'd want a mini one, for just us, that we can freeze.'

Gal Gadot blames anti-Israel sentiment for Snow White's £84m loss

Gal Gadot has partly blamed anti-Israel sentiment for the £84m flop of Disney's remake of Snow White. The film, released in March this year, was a live-action remake of the original 1937 feature-length cartoon made by Walt Disney. It was marred by controversy after Rachel Zegler, the film's lead actor, said on social media she has been 'public with a pro-Palestine stance since 2021'. Israeli Gadot, 40, who was cast as the evil stepmother, has now broken her silence about why she thought the film failed. Speaking to Israeli TV station Keshet 12's The A Talks programme, she said: 'I was sure this movie was going to be a huge hit. 'And then October 7 happened. What's happening in all kinds of industries, and also in Hollywood, is that there's a lot of pressure on celebrities to speak out against Israel.' Zegler, 23, was criticised after she shared the trailer for the studio's live-action remake online last summer, with the comment: 'And always remember, free Palestine.' The New York Times said Mark Platt, the film's lead producer, flew to Los Angeles to have a 'heart-to-heart' with Zegler after her post caused a 'severe rift' with Gadot, it was reported at the time. While Gadot stayed silent on the issue at the time, she has now said: 'I can always explain and try to give context about what's happening here, and I always do that. But in the end, people make their own decisions. And I was disappointed the movie was so affected and it didn't succeed at the box office. But that's how it goes.' Posting on her Instagram account on Sunday, Gadot added: 'Of course, the film didn't fail solely because of external pressures. There are many factors that determine why a film succeeds or fails and success is never guaranteed.' Among the films controversies was a flip-flop decisions about casting actual dwarves or CGI representations. Bringing in Zegler as Snow White was also criticised because she is not white, despite the original German fairytale describing the character's 'skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood and hair as black as ebony'. Disney scaled back a lavish Hollywood premiere and cancelled planned interviews with the media following the fallout. Talking about her role, Zegler also suggested her character was a feminist, prompting commentators to criticise the actress for trying to make the beloved fairytale into a 'woke' retelling. Zegler also suggested the feature film was based on a different version of the 1812 Brothers Grimm fairytale. She said David Hand's 1937 original animated film was 'extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power' and admitted she has only seen it once. 'The original cartoon came out in 1937, and very evidently so,' she told Extra TV in 2022. 'There's a big focus on her love story with a guy who literally stalks her. Weird. So we didn't do that this time.'

Devastation for 'Hollywood of the South' as Marvel pulls plug on new projects...leaving thousands reeling

Movie makers in Georgia say they have been left scrambling for work as Marvel begins unwinding its longstanding relationship with the southern state. The Hollywood studio has filmed dozens of TV shows and blockbuster movies in Georgia in recent years, including several of the Avengers hits. Marvel shot many scenes in Georgia thanks to its generous production tax credits, with flicks that cost over $500,000 qualifying for a 20 percent base transferable tax credit. But the studio has recently been moving much of its production to the United Kingdom, citing rising costs in Georgia that make filming across the pond a cheaper option. This most recently saw this summer's Fantastic Four reboot filmed in the UK, and the loss of Marvel's business has fueled a nearly 50 percent drop in production spending in Georgia in the past three years, per the Wall Street Journal. The entertainment industry supported almost 20,000 jobs in Georgia, with the steep drop off set to impact thousands of movie workers. Script supervisor Janine Gosselin, 62, told the outlet that she has gone from having an overload of work with Marvel after moving to Georgia for the past two decades to now struggling to find new productions. 'You feel like a jilted lover,' she said. Gosselin said she is not alone in finding her workload drop off, and was forced to borrow from her retirement plan to pay the bills after failing to find steady work for over a year. Following the London production of the Fantastic Four reboot, Marvel is now reportedly filming its next two Avengers movies and the next Spider-Man film in London as well. The sharp decline in the number of productions in Georgia has been a shock to the state's movie industry. This has seen only around 245 projects shot in Georgia in the fiscal year that ended in June, compared to 412 in the 2022 fiscal year. The drop-off has also been driven by a general reduction in the number of TV shows that studios have made in recent years as streaming platforms become central to their profit margins. Much of this work has since moved overseas, and the United Kingdom has become a favorite of many studios due to its lower salary demands and the lack of a need to fund employee health insurance. According to statistics cited by the Journal from data company ProdPro, the United Kingdom has seen a 16 percent surge in movies and TV series with budgets above $40 million in 2024 compared to 2022. In the US nationwide, there has been a 29 percent decline in this same metric. Georgia became known in movie circles as the 'Hollywood of the South', and an Atlanta facility called Trilith Studios - with over 1,000 acres of space and 34 stages - was the HQ for many famous movie shoots. Lenzi Sealy, who scouted locations for four Marvel projects, told the Journal that at the height of the productions there, sets were 'fighting over stages on a daily basis because there just wasn't enough room for Marvel and whatever other show was trying to film.' Statewide, the entertainment industry supported almost 20,000 jobs. But now, Trilith has been struggling to fill its stages. With its days as a movie production hub falling away, some states have tried to emulate its tax credits system. Texas, New York, New Jersey and California have expanded their advantages to try and entice studios back to the US in recent times.
