I'm a TV critic - I was so wrong about Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters

'If you get eaten by a shark… that's one hell of a story at the funeral, isn't it?'
That's the words of Ross Noble, shortly before he is actually bitten by a shark in the name of ITV's bizarre and surprisingly touching new reality series, Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters.
Thankfully, he makes it out of the water unscathed. His first, and I imagine only, shark attack comes from an eight-foot lemon shark, a relatively harmless species of apex predator which chomps on his leg but barely punctures his wetsuit.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jaws, the Steven Spielberg horror that continues to strike fear into the hearts of all who watch it (causing generations to still be too scared to enter the water) ITV is throwing some of the UK's most beloved celebs into shark infested waters to prove that they have an unreasonably bad rep.
On paper, it sounds like a Bushtucker trial ramped up to 100. I'm A Celebrity contestants can – and have – survived the odd nibble from a huntsman spider or a venomless snake but Ant and Dec are yet to throw a Corrie legend in the water with an actual shark.
An impressive cast, boasting Sir Lenny Henry, Countdown's Rachel Riley and McFly's Dougie Poynter, is helped by leading shark experts to come face to face with some of the most feared predators in the world in their natural environment.
Gradually, they build the courage to free-swim with a tiger shark – widely considered to be one of the most aggressive animals in the ocean.
They're welcomed into the process by Paul de Gelder, a charismatic former marine who lost his leg and arm to a bull shark in 2009 but now devotes his life to protecting the animal that almost killed him. It's a stark reminder that while, yes, sharks are misunderstood they're not kittens of the sea.
The celebs are thrown straight into the deep end. Paul tells them they'll be getting in the water with more than a dozen bull sharks – the very species that ripped his limbs from his body – but for the only time in this entire process they will be in a cage.
There are varying degrees of terror from the stars: On one end of the scale you have Rachel Riley who can't believe her luck ad gleefully dives into the water without a shred of fear.
At the other you have Call The Midwife's Helen George, who hasn't dared put her head under water for more than 20 years let alone share a space with a four-meter-long maneater.
Even as somewhat of a shark obsessive (rarely a day goes by when I don't lose myself down a rabbit hole of shark videos on Instagram) I wasn't sure how or if Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters would work.
Obviously, there's no real jeopardy – not that I'd want that – but without it what is the pull?
Unexpectedly, the pull is George, who trembles just looking at the water. Her fear is so deep-rooted she sobs just at the idea of jumping off the boat.
But there is no contest here, the entire group is rooting for each other and there is no one to root for more than George, who perhaps seems unlikely to swim with a tiger shark but shows incredible perseverance which becomes a surprisingly moving watch.
Determined to be strong for her two children, George pushes herself beyond what she thought possible.
Reality television is at its best with camaraderie at its core, and I can't recall another show that shows teamwork quite like this.
It's refreshing and actually quite a bold move not to have any contest running through Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters but it's a gamble that pays off.
I had no idea what there would be to love about watching celebrities learning to dive but there are few reality shows which show so much growth and so quickly.
But Shark! Celebrity Waters sets out to serve a greater purpose than just reducing Helen George to a nervous breakdown. More Trending
Initially, I feared it was just a cheap attempt to disguise putting celebrities in precarious situations with a deadly predator, but it does genuinely feel determined to prove sharks are so far from the monster Jaws portrayed them to be.
Without sharks, the ocean dies and if the ocean dies then we die. Sadly, that's not as sexy a tagline as 'just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water'.
Will Shark! Celebrity Infested Waters cause a surge in sympathy for sharks? It's a tough sell, but it's definitely a step in the right direction and does feel far more well-intentioned than I thought it would.

Joanna Lumley ‘wouldn't mind' assisted dying if she got to a ‘miserable' state

The 79-year-old said she supported the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which was backed by MPs in the Commons last month, that would allow terminally ill adults with fewer than six months to live to apply for an assisted death. Asked about the Bill in an interview with Saga Magazine, Dame Joanna said: 'People are terribly anxious about it and think one may be coerced (into voluntary euthanasia). 'But I'm saying this now when nobody's coercing me, don't let me turn into somebody who doesn't recognise the people I love most, where I'm having a miserable time. 'When I get to the stage where I can't speak and have to be fed, that won't be me any more and that's when I wouldn't mind saying farewell.' The Bill would see those wishing to go through assisted dying require approval by two doctors and a panel featuring a social worker, senior legal figure and psychiatrist. It will next come before the House of Lords for further debate and votes. One of the Bill's most high-profile backers has been TV presenter Dame Esther Rantzen, 85, who has terminal cancer, and recently urged members of the House of Lords not to block the legislation. Dame Joanna is best known for her roles as Patsy Stone in the BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, Sapphire in ITV supernatural series Sapphire And Steel, and in The New Avengers, the 1970s revamped version of 1960s ITV spy series The Avengers. She will appear in season two of Netflix supernatural series Wednesday as Grandmama in August.

James Martin considers leaving ITV show home after fears of getting 'lynched'

Celebrity chef James Martin has opened up about his love for his home county of Yorkshire, admitting he would be "lynched" if he didn't end up back there Celebrity chef James Martin has candidly expressed that he'll be "lynched" if he doesn't make his way back to Yorkshire. The 53 year old culinary star was raised on a sprawling 100-acre farm within the Castle Howard estate and cherishes his visits back home whenever possible. ‌ James currently divides his time among the Cotswolds, Manchester, and Hampshire, where he oversees his trio of restaurants. His current residence is in Hampshire, from where he broadcasts his show James Martin's Saturday Morning, filmed in a specially-constructed kitchen. ‌ His seven-bedroom Hampshire abode features an outdoor kitchen, a greenhouse, and sits on 1.5 acres of land. The bespoke outdoor cooking space includes a top-of-the-line wood-fired pizza oven, a large central island, and stylish green industrial lighting, setting the scene for the ultimate culinary experience. ‌ Segments of his ITV programme are shot within a converted garage. It's believed that the property is situated near James' eatery The Kitchen at Chewton Glen Hotel and Spa in New Milton. ‌ Despite residing in the south east, James' affection for Yorkshire remains evident. He informed his audience that he would be heading to God's Own County during the summer hiatus of his weekend show, reports Yorkshire Live. In a conversation with Food and Travel, James reminisced about his formative years: "I had an amazing childhood. We farmed 100 acres, so we learned the value of graft, but also about food. "It's an amazing lesson in life to learn at that age: to respect the people who produce food, that it's not just a given – people have to grow it, make it, produce it – and it also gives you a respect doing that as a career. I didn't enjoy school, I hated it, but I loved home life. I was always outdoorsy, mending fences, fixing tractors." ‌ He reveals the farm faced initial struggles as his father "wasn't a farmer by trade," having a background in catering instead. Nevertheless, the family persevered, eventually introducing chickens and pigs to their land. Yorkshire produce has consistently played a significant role in James' life - he even hosted a culinary tour across the county - shaping his approach to cooking. Yet, he admits it's the local folk that draw him back to his roots. He humorously notes that in London, if you strike up a conversation, "think you're going to mug them" whereas in Yorkshire, according to James, the people are "very honest and much friendlier". ‌ While he holds the Yorkshire populace in high regard, James doesn't shy away from praising the region's stunning coastline, the Yorkshire Moors, and the lush woodlands, labelling the area as "magical" and "diverse". Despite his deep affection for Yorkshire, it's somewhat unexpected that James remains settled in Hampshire, though relocating would present practical difficulties with his widespread ventures. However, James maintains that he has established a "routine" now. He reveals: "I know where I'm going on which day, every week, and the travelling isn't too bad." When probed about a potential return to his roots, James admits: "I'll get lynched if I don't end up in Yorkshire. I love Yorkshire." Catch Saturday Morning with James Martin at 9.30am on ITV One. This week's show, originally aired in 2023, features James in conversation with crooner Jack Savoretti, Midsomer Murders' Neil Dudgeon, and culinary wizards Glynn Purnell and Sabrina Gidda.
