It is a basic principle in biology- blood is made in the bone marrow. It's where the cells(hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs))responsible for generating red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets reside.
But a striking study from researchers at UC San Francisco (UCSF) is rewriting that narrative.
According to new findings published in Blood, the lungs also contain active blood-forming stem cells, capable of producing not only red blood cells but also platelets and key immune cells.
The discovery could have direct implications for stem cell therapies and transplant medicine.
The UCSF research team, backed by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), first made this groundbreaking discovery in 2017when they found that mouse lungs were generating up to half of the animal's platelets, a surprising contribution for an organ never thought to be involved in hematopoiesis.
These cells, structurally and functionally similar to bone marrow HSCs, weren't merely circulating through the lungs, but seemed to be living in there.
To test how capable these cells actually were, scientists isolated HSCs from both lung and bone marrow tissue, grew them in laboratory conditions, and observed what they produced.
'Both types of HSCs thrived in our gold-standard stem cell experiment, but the lung HSC colonies made more red blood cells and megakaryocytes, while the bone marrow colonies tended to make more immune cells,' explained Mark Looney, MD, professor of medicine and laboratory medicine at UCSF and senior author of the study.
Rethinking the bone marrow transplant
Bone marrow transplants have long been used to treat cancers like leukemia and other blood-related conditions. They involve harvesting stem cells from a donor, often via a blood draw, and using them to rebuild a patient's blood system.
But the UCSF team found that nearly 1 in 5 stem cells isolated in bone marrow transplants actually carried markers specific to lung-derived HSCs, suggesting that current stem cell harvests may be drawing from more than just the bone marrow.
'For decades, bone marrow transplants have been a lynchpin in the treatment of cancers like leukemia,' Looney said. 'The lung HSCs could prove to be a second and significant reservoir of these precious stem cells.'
The team also demonstrated that human lung HSCs could restore bone marrow function in mice, a powerful indication that these cells aren't just present, they are fully operational.
Why would lungs make blood?
That question remains unanswered, but there are theories.
'The lungs are critical to blood circulation, so it's tantalizing to see the lung HSCs as an emergency reservoir for red blood cell and platelet production,' said Looney.
One possibility is that these cells activate during times of stress or injury, when the body's demand for oxygen-carrying red cells or clot-forming platelets spikes. The lungs, always at the center of the oxygen exchange process, could provide a rapid-response supply.

New Delhi: Do not follow Hollywood movies on how people get heart attacks, researchers have warned, saying that the portrayals of someone clutching their chest and collapsing dramatically are misleading and shouldn't be expected. Ann Eckhardt, a nursing professor and researcher at The University of Texas at Arlington in the US said that 'The Hollywood Heart Attack', unfortunately, is not real life. 'It's not always intense. Sometimes it's just discomfort that doesn't feel quite right, so people tend to wait to see a doctor. The longer you wait, the more likely you are to have negative consequences after your heart attack,' Eckhardt said in an article published in the journal Heart & Lung. Eckhardt and her colleagues are working to set the record straight by first understanding how the public perceives chest pain. The team explored the common misconceptions about heart attack symptoms. Many patients don't experience the dramatic, big-screen version of a heart attack. Instead, symptoms can be complex and even mild. Another widespread myth, the researchers note, is that heart attacks look drastically different in men versus women. 'We used to say men have typical symptoms and women have atypical symptoms,' Eckhardt said. 'We're trying very hard to move away from that language now. The most common symptom for men and women is chest-related. We created confusion by saying women are somehow completely different.' Changing public perception isn't easy, but it's a mission that drives Eckhardt and her colleagues. Three years ago, she helped develop the 'Chest Pain Conception Questionnaire' to help determine how everyday people view heart attacks. The study revealed that nearly 75 per cent of respondents had consumed heart attack information through sources like TV or movies, highlighting the need for clearer, more accurate educational materials on chest pain and related symptoms. 'We often tell people chest pain is a symptom of a heart attack, but what we don't tell them is what they might actually feel,' Eckhardt said. 'For a lot of people, it's not pain in the traditional sense. It's more discomfort, pressure, tightness. They just don't feel quite right, but they can't really put their finger on it.' That uncertainty often causes people to delay seeking medical attention. 'The longer you wait, the more likely it is you'll have irreversible damage to the heart,' Eckhardt said. 'So, if we can determine what people think a heart attack will be like, perhaps we can help the medical community better triage and ask questions. It's not just 'Are you having chest pain?'; it's also 'Do you have any discomfort, pressure, tightness, squeezing?''

Village Health Nurses (VHN) have demanded that the move to engage Mid-Level Health Providers (MLHP), nurses recruited on a contract basis, in carrying out immunisation services at Health Sub-Centres (HSC) should be dropped. They alleged that the Health department was trying to take away the immunisation works from VHNs and rope in contract nurses due to pressure from the Central government. The Tamil Nadu Public Health Nurses Federation met Health Secretary P. Senthil Kumar and Mission Director of National Health Mission, Tamil Nadu, Arun Thamburaj, and put forward their demands. P. Nirmala, State president of the federation handed over a memorandum. The association demanded that the decision to appoint MLHPs at HSCs should be scrapped. They also demanded the Health Minister Ma. Subramanian to take back a statement 'falsely accusing' VHNs of refusing to take up COVID-19 vaccination and routine immunisation services. VHNs and Sector Health Nurses had taken up field work during the COVID-19 pandemic induced lockdown and carried out vaccination and other pandemic-related work. They alleged that the Minister told reporters that MLHPs were roped in as VHNs refused to do such work. This has humiliated VHNs, the association said. Posing a question to the Health Minister, the association asked how was it possible for 4,888 contract MLHPs to carry out the final phase of COVID-19 vaccination works when 8,713 HSCs functioned as vaccination centres and that too without training. COVID-19 vaccination started in January 2021, and the majority were covered during 2022. When this was the case, how can MLHPs who were recruited from the end of December 2021 to January 2022 carry out the COVID-19 vaccination, they asked. While registering their condemnation for the Minister's statement, the association demanded that the move to appoint MLHPs at HSCs following pressure from the Union government as a part of its national health policy should be dropped. The Minister should stop falsely accusing VHNs of covering up this truth, they said. The association has decided to intensify protests if the Health Minister does not take back the statement. They demanded that the vacant posts of VHNs should be filled, and data entry operators should be involved to upload immunisation details on the U-WIN portal.
