60K new police recruits to get appointment letters in UP on June 15, Union Minister Amit Shah to attend mega event
The Uttar Pradesh government is gearing up for a mega ceremony to distribute appointment letters to more than 60,000 new police recruits. Union home minister Amit Shah will be present at the programme to be held here this Sunday, officials said.
The stage and massive pandals, being set up at the Defence Expo Ground in Vrindavan Yojana, are spread over an area of over 100 acres.
Addressing a gathering on Sunday, chief minister Yogi Adityanath had confirmed that Shah would distribute the appointment letters in an event in Lucknow on June 15.

The recruitments were part of the UP Police Constables' Direct Recruitment Examination-2023, which could be completed after hiccups of a question paper leak in February last year. It was one of the biggest recruitment drives taken up by the state government, with over 48 lakh aspirants, which included 15 lakh women, evincing interest in joining the department.
The leak had given the opposition ammunition to target the Union and the state governments during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. BJP-led NDA's share in the state came down to 33 from 62 in 2019.
While the political nuances of Shah's visit cannot be overlooked as panchayat polls are due in the state early next year, the event is also significant as it shows the government's commitment to creating job opportunities for youngsters.

A senior police official engaged in the arrangements confirmed that the efforts to make the event a mega affair were in full swing. 'Pandals being set up for the event are completely waterproof. Separate transformers are being installed at the site for an uninterrupted power supply. Sitting arrangements are being made for at least 70,000 people,' he said, adding the CM met the Union minister in Delhi on Monday to formally invite him to the event.
He said director general of police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna had written to all district police chiefs and police commissioners to expedite the steps required from the home districts of police recruits to facilitate the process. The letter stated that the allocation of cadres to 48,196 male and 12,048 female candidates should be completed soon.
In the letter, the DGP said while the male candidates were required to wear full-sleeve white shirts, khaki pants and black shoes to the programme, women candidates must wear plain salwar suits or sarees. He said the home districts should make arrangements for the candidates to travel to Lucknow and come back, and that the Lucknow police commissioner should make arrangements for their stay.

The recruitment process was completed under Rajeev Krishna as the director of the UP Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) after the removal of previous director Renuka Mishra following the question paper leak.
The state government cancelled the written examination on February 24 and directed that it be reconducted within six months. The written examination was then successfully conducted in August 2024 under heightened security.

West Bengal govt to allow residential consumers to opt out from power smart meters: Official
KOLKATA : Amid protests over alleged inflated electricity bills following the installation of prepaid smart meters, the West Bengal government has decided to allow residential power consumers to opt out from the system and revert to traditional devices, an official said on Tuesday. The government had on Monday temporarily suspended fresh installations of smart meters for domestic consumers, he said. "The installation of smart meters for residential consumers has been temporarily suspended, but there is no plan for a mass recall. Consumers can choose to switch back to conventional meters," the official said. The prepaid smart meter installation will continue for commercial and government establishments, the official said. The decision comes after the BJP and the Left Front have been accusing the Trinamool Congress government of "burdening households with sudden tariff hikes and opaque smart meter installation". There had been protests in districts such as Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and Bardhaman, where people alleged their bills doubled or tripled after smart meter installations. The Mamata Banerjee government had earlier approved large-scale smart meter deployment to help the cash-strapped utility, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd, recover dues. The state government departments alone owed over Rs 1,500 crore to the discom, which has a total debt of Rs 15,400 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal, the official said. In May, Polaris Smart Metering secured a Rs 2,246-crore contract to install 2.2 million smart meters in West Bengal under the Centre's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

Rahul Gandhi urges PM Modi to end woes of OBC students
New Delhi: The leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi , urging him to address the issues of delays in distribution of post-matric scholarships for students from backward communities and the poor conditions in residential hostels for these students. Gandhi cited his experience during a visit to a university hostel in poll-bound Bihar to raise the issues, saying they are also prevalent in other parts of the country. He sought regular audit of these hostels as well as enhanced and regular payment of pre-matric scholarships for these sections of students. "I request you to resolve two critical issues which hinder education opportunities for the 90% of students who are from marginalized communities . Firstly, the conditions in residential hostels for students from Dalit, ST (scheduled tribe), EBC (extremely backward classes), OBC (other backward classes) and minority communities are deplorable," Gandhi said in his letter dated June 10.

Video of TMC councillor's street brawl with another woman goes viral, she blames ‘reckless driving'
After a video of a street brawl involving two women, one being a TMC councillor, went viral, Panihati municipal authorities in North 24 Parganas said the incident would be investigated, and appropriate action would be taken. Local TMC councillor Srabanti Roy, however, said she would not file a police complaint against the other woman, citing her young age, and added that the brawl happened after the young woman's Scooty hit her bike. In the viral video, the councillor is seen slapping a young woman, who retaliates by grabbing Roy's hair and hitting her. As passersby watch, the two women fight, oblivious to attempts by locals to intervene. The two women were eventually stopped from fighting by traffic police. The incident reportedly took place on Monday near Panihati Mahotsavtala Ghat. Roy is councillor of Ward No. 26 in Panihati municipality. Roy on Wednesday told mediapersons that the confrontation began when the young woman's Scooty allegedly hit her bike. Roy claimed that she dismounted to protest and warn the young woman about 'reckless driving'. 'I consider it my duty as a public representative to warn her. But the young woman responded with abuse and took my bike keys. As I protested, I was attacked,' Roy said. 'A section of the media is making a big deal out of my slapping the young woman. But in the video, you can clearly see her actions,' she said. Roy said she was not keen to file a police complaint against the woman, as 'she is young, and I don't want any repercussions for her.
