Jarrett Stidham embraces mentor role with Bo Nix: 'He's one of my closest friends'

Denver Broncos backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham was nearly perfect in the team's 30-9 preseason win over the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.
Stidham went 14-of-15 passing for 136 yards with two touchdowns, including a perfectly-placed 36-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Trent Sherfield late in the second quarter. Stidham also rushed three times for a team-high 36 yards. The 29-year-old quarterback deflected praise to his teammates after the win.
'I think it was good that we were able to move the ball and put some points on the board," Stidham said. "But, you know, the guys around me played great. The line played incredibly well and the backs ran the ball super well. That obviously helps the pass game. The receivers were running a lot of good routes and catching the football. So it was a team effort and like I said earlier, we shot ourselves in the foot a little bit with some of the penalties, but we'll get that cleaned up and get ready to go next week.'
Stidham competed for the starting quarterback job with Bo Nix last summer and then spent the 2024 season as the team's QB2 after Nix won QB1 duties. After the game on Saturday, Stidham was asked about recalibrating and being the No. 2 quarterback behind Nix in 2025.
'No, it's been great -- Bo Nix and I obviously have an incredible relationship," Stidham said. "I mean, he's one of my closest friends and being able to be with him and help him out as much as I possibly can, that's what I'm here to do. Not only him, but the rest of the guys on offense. And this is a lot of us. This is our third year in this system together. We're just trying to keep pushing guys to be better and keep pushing him to continue to excel and lead the team.'
Stidham only played 14 snaps last season as he was given mop-up duties late in games. If all goes well with Nix in 2025, Stidham will have a similar role this fall, and it sounds like he has embraced his position as a veteran backup, mentor and friend to Nix.

Broncos great dies at age 89

Former Denver Broncos wide receiver Lionel Taylor has died at age 89, the team said Wednesday. "We are saddened to learn of the passing of #BroncosROF wide receiver Lionel Taylor," the team wrote on social media. "An original Bronco and one of the most dominant players of his era, Taylor had a tremendous impact on the franchise during his seven seasons in Denver (1960-66). Our hearts go out to Taylor's family and friends." Taylor joined the Broncos' inaugural team in 1960 after spending one season as a linebacker with the Chicago Bears in 1959. He then switched positions and became a legendary AFL wide receiver. Taylor, a five-time All-AFL selection and three-time AFL All-Star, led the upstart league in receiving in five of the AFL's first six seasons. Despite playing in a run-heavy era, he became the first pro to total 100 receptions in a single season (1961). He also topped 1,000 receiving yards in four of his first six years with the Broncos. Taylor's 6,872 receiving yards with Denver rank fourth in franchise history and his 44 touchdown catches rank fifth. He was added to the team's Ring of Fame with the first round of inductees in 1984. After leaving the Broncos in 1967, Taylor spent the final three years of his career with the Houston Oilers and then transitioned to coaching. He won two Super Bowls as a wide receivers coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers and later served as a head coach at the college level and in NFL Europe. Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 24: a history of the number and who wore it best

The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 24 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 24 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 24 wearer: CB Joey Porter Jr. Son of legendary Pittsburgh defender Joey Porter, Joey Porter Jr. is the current No. 24 wearer on the Steelers roster. Selected with the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Porter quickly became one of the Steelers' most dependable lockdown corners. Teaming with the newly acquired Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey to form the NFL's best trio of cornerbacks, the sky is the limit in Year 3 for JPJ. Last five Steelers to wear No. 24: Best No. 24 in Steelers history: CB Ike Taylor The greatest No. 24 in Steelers history is undoubtedly CB Ike Taylor — a steady presence at cornerback for one of the most feared defenses in franchise history. Selected with the 125th pick in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL Draft, Taylor saw early usage as a kick returner before eventually taking over the starting outside cornerback role opposite Deshea Townsend in 2005. In his 12-year Steelers tenure, the outspoken Taylor produced 14 interceptions over the span of 174 games — winning two Super Bowl titles along the way. He retired in 2015, leaving a legacy marked by consistency over individual accolades — the hallmark of a great team player and arguably the best Steeler to ever wear No. 24. Sean Payton doesn't seem to be a big fan of doing two joint practices

The Denver Broncos agreed to a pair of joint practices this summer, one on the road against the San Francisco 49ers and a second at home against the Arizona Cardinals. Practicing with two different teams in one summer was a first for coach Sean Payton. "This is the first time for me, and for us, where [we have] back-to-back joint practices," Payton said Tuesday. "And so, when you have a joint practice, you lose a day -- like the day prior, you gotta be smart. The day after [is a walk-through]. So it can … when you get the calendar at the start of preseason, you lay it out and you see when your games are, there's three of them. And when you add a joint practice, it's a little different the day before and the day after. "So, when you have two of them, it can cut into maybe your installation and your normal training camp routine. So, the first time for us to do two, we'll see if we ever do it again. I'm used to really one either Week 2 or Week 3. So what was different was Week 1. And that's just one of those things you make a note of." Payton did not directly say he wouldn't do two again, but he certainly seemed to imply it. Payton also wasn't a fan of how long the 49ers practice lasted. "Thursday's practice was pretty long, maybe a little longer than I would've liked, and then the turnaround and then the game on Saturday," Payton said, perhaps hinting that this week's joint practice won't be as long. After a pair of joint practices over the last week, Denver's starters might not play as much on Saturday as they did in Week 2 of preseason last summer. 'It may," Payton said when asked if the joint practices will impact how much starters play. "It may because, again, this is a first. Normally, I would go into the second quarter. I don't know that I'm going to do that based on the schedule. We'll see.' Saturday's game will be nationally televised on NFL Network (and available on these TV channels).
