The wave of players withdrawing from the Rocket Classic continues, even breaking through among the top names on the PGA Tour. With less than 48 hours until the event, seven players have already removed themselves from play at the Detroit Golf Club.
The latest addition to this list is the toughest blow yet: Tony Finau, World No. 44 and winner of the 2022 Rocket Classic.
Finau's withdrawal was confirmed by the PGA Tour Communications Twitter account. No information has been provided yet about the six-time PGA Tour winner's reasons for making this decision.

Joseph Bramlett, World No. 232, will take Finau's place in the field.
Finau was scheduled to tee off on Thursday at 12:43 p.m. Eastern Time from the 10th tee, sharing a group with Harry Hall and Aaron Wise.
The Salt Lake City native tied for 66th place at last week's Travelers Championship, posting an 11-under score. He had two poor first rounds (73 and 74), appeared to recover by carding a 68 on moving day, but completely faded in the final round by carding a 76.
At the end of last season, Finau underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus. The procedure was successful, but he had to skip his commitment to play in the Grant Thornton Invitational with Nelly Korda.
Tony Finau of the United States plays his shot from the 14th tee during the first round of the Travelers Championship 2025 at TPC River Highlands on June 19, 2025 in Cromwell, Connecticut.
Tony Finau of the United States plays his shot from the 14th tee during the first round of the Travelers Championship 2025 at TPC River Highlands on June 19, 2025 in Cromwell, Connecticut. However, the 35-year-old appears to have recovered from the injury, as he was able to start the 2025 season normally, tying for 15th in the season-opening tournament, The Sentry. To date, he has played in 16 PGA Tour events.
His results have not been on par with previous seasons, though. He has only one top-10 finish and four other top-25 finishes so far this season. These results have caused him to fall to 44th in the world rankings and 51st in the FedEx Cup standings.
In contrast, Finau finished in the top 25 15 times in 2024, including five top-10 finishes and his best finish was runner-up at the Houston Open. He played in 22 tournaments that season.

From The Archives: Rafalski Sets The Table For Success

The Detroit Red Wings were short two good-sized, top-six forwards last summer when Todd Bertuzzi spurned their offer of a one-year contract, after they already opted not to re-sign Robert Lang. But a lack of size and depleted scoring depth up front isn't what concerned them. This is a team that relies on mobile, puck-moving defensemen to generate an attack, so it was vital for the Wings to replace Mathieu Schneider after he signed with Anaheim July 1. They did so in mere hours, inking Brian Rafalski to a five-year, $30-million contract. It was a lot of money and term to commit to a player who turned 34 last September. But to Red Wings coach Mike Babcock, there was never any doubt it was what his team needed. 'We had to have that (element),' Babcock said. 'You can't play the way we play without it, it's impossible. He can get back and get the puck going. That's so critical if you want to play on offense.'' Rafalski turned out to be one of the best free agent signings of 2007. It's as if he were tailor-made to be a Red Wing, and not just because he's a metro Detroit native. An elite skater with great vision who can move the puck in a flash, Rafalski teamed with five-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom to form the NHL's best blueline duo. It took Rafalski only 54 games to eclipse his previous career-high total of nine goals; he'll finish close to his career-high tally of 55 points, which he would have eclipsed easily if he hadn't missed eight games with a groin strain. Detroit went 2-5-1 without him – Lidstrom was also out for five of those games – further demonstrating his value. 'A lot of guys didn't really know him enough when he first came here, but he's definitely a great player,'' said goalie Chris Osgood. 'I liken him to a really smart, efficient quarterback who always makes the right pass coming out of the zone. If I have a chance, I always give him the puck because in all likelihood he'll get it out for us and make a great play.'' Lidstrom is impressed with Rafalski's knack for knowing where his teammates are on the ice. 'He's accurate with his passes, too,'' Lidstrom said. 'It's crisp, hard passes…they really help breaking out of our own end. When you make a good first pass, you usually can skate through the neutral zone.'' Though he flourished in New Jersey's conservative system his first seven seasons in the league, Rafalski has relished helping lead the Wings' freewheeling attack. In Detroit, there's a lot of flow. Star forwards such as Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg fly up the ice, breaking through gaps in the defense, hitting holes with speed. They need someone to pass them the puck at the exact right time. 'That's what I consider myself best at,'' Rafalski said. 'Forwards have freedom, they're not just stuck on the walls, how we seemed to be in Jersey.'' Rafalski sometimes has trouble in making the transition from offense to defense, but he compensates with his great mobility. Size has also been an issue for him throughout his career, probably the reason he wasn't drafted after graduating from the University of Wisconsin. Listed at 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, Rafalski is smaller than the average defenseman, but Osgood noted: 'He's got a huge lower body, you don't see him get bumped off the puck very often if he's fighting with somebody to get it out of the zone.'' With a pair of Stanley Cup rings, Rafalski knows what it takes to win a championship. And the Wings realize their title dreams are a lot more realistic with Rafalski in the fold.

Jack Flaherty dominates, Detroit Tigers offense pops in 10-0 win vs Houston Astros

Jack Flaherty dominated. It was his best start of the 2025 season. The Detroit Tigers need Flaherty to begin pitching like a No. 2 starter before it's too late to rely on him in the biggest games, but as the postseason approaches, Flaherty has experienced more bad than good with his performance. Flaherty took a big step in the right direction, leading the Tigers to a 10-0 win over the Houston Astros on Monday, Aug. 18, at Comerica Park. The offense supported Flaherty by scoring all 10 runs in a four-inning stretch, powered by four home runs. The 29-year-old fired seven scoreless innings — his first time completing seven innings in his two-year career with the Tigers, spanning 43 starts. Facing the Astros, he allowed just three hits and one walk with nine strikeouts. Flaherty threw 60 of 90 pitches for strikes. The Tigers (74-53) won the first of three games against the Astros the series. Flaherty dealt with the most stress in the first inning, as the Astros loaded the bases on Carlos Correa's double, Jose Altuve's single and Christian Walker's walk. With two outs, Victor Caratini lined out to end the inning. That's how Flaherty stranded the bases loaded. Flaherty cruised through the final six innings of his start. The Astros put two runners on base the rest of the way against Flaherty: Jacob Melton's hit-by-pitch in the second inning and Walker's single in the fourth inning. Flaherty retired the final 11 batters. He generated 11 whiffs on 36 swings for a 30.6% whiff rate: two fastballs, six curveballs and three sliders. For the second start in a row, he didn't throw any sinkers or changeup, which he already used sparingly but now isn't using at all. Flaherty owns a 4.51 ERA in 25 starts. Once that happened, the flood gates opened for the Tigers' offense to put up double-digit runs, thanks to home runs from Wenceel Pérez, Riley Greene, Trey Sweeney and Colt Keith. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Pérez hit a middle-middle cutter from right-hander Spencer Arrighetti. To get that pitch to hit for damage, Pérez battled for 10 pitches — swinging at all seven pitches in the zone and refusing to swing at all three pitches out of the zone. An incredible plate appearance led to an incredible result. The Tigers' offense kept its foot on the gas, scoring four runs in the fifth inning, one run in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh inning. In the fifth, Kerry Carpenter drove in two runs on a triple, followed by Riley Greene's two-run home run — taking a 5-0 lead. In the sixth, Keith provided a sacrifice fly after Sweeney's triple for a 6-0 lead. In the seventh, Sweeney hit a three-run home run and Keith hit a solo home run — taking a 10-0 lead. Greene has 29 home runs in 123 games. Alex Lange appears Right-handed reliever Alex Lange pitched in the ninth inning, protecting a 10-run lead. Before Monday's game, the Tigers activated Lange from the injured list. It was his first game for the Tigers since May 22, 2024. He completed a scoreless inning.
