Premier League accumulator picks: Which bets to add to your weekend treble

New York Times07-03-2025

This weekend's Premier League fixtures promise intrigue and excitement — and the scope to alter the top and bottom of the table. We've scanned the markets and picked out three wagers that bettors should add to their accumulators.
Five of Ipswich's last six league games have produced three or more goals, with some of the scorelines getting really out of hand. There's been a 6-0 trouncing at the hands of Manchester City, 4-1 losses to both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, and a wild 3-2 defeat to Manchester United.

The only game that hasn't covered the over in that span was the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, but their expected goals against (xGA) figure on the day was 2.4. Put another way, they were statistically expected to concede more, but goalkeeper Alex Palmer produced a stunning display, saving them from defeat.
With their opponents, Crystal Palace, starting to heat up (three wins from their last four) and finding some home form at last, this game feels ripe for goals. The Eagles' top striker, Jean-Philippe Mateta, may be out injured, but Oliver Glasner has plenty of other firepower to call upon, with Eddie Nketiah stepping into the void well lately and enjoying great support from Ebere Eze and Ismaïla Sarr on the flanks.
Handily, Palace also haven't kept a home clean sheet since October, which should encourage bettors that this game has every chance of clearing over 2.5.

Unlike with our first selection, the statistics aren't exactly pointing us in the direction of the under 2.5 market here. So far, nine of Wolves' 13 home league games have hit the over, while Everton have been a much greater attacking threat since David Moyes took the managerial reins in January.
So why the pick?
It's based around one pivotal player who is missing: Matheus Cunha. He's scored 13 league goals this season despite a difficult overall campaign for his team, often producing something spectacular from a distance to break a game wide open.
He was shown a red card for violent conduct in the FA Cup last weekend after headbutting Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez. He'll now begin a lengthy suspension, calling into question Wolves' goalscoring capacity this weekend, and in the weeks to follow.
You could certainly forgive Aston Villa for feeling a little distracted from the league. Manager Unai Emery continually insists it's the priority competition, but with his charges enjoying two cup adventures, the schedule is stretching this squad to the max.
The general trend this season has been that Villa struggle domestically after a big Champions League night earlier in the week. They've won just one of their eight games played following these occasions, which was way back in September, losing four and drawing three.

With this pattern in mind, and given that only four teams have picked up fewer points on the road than Villa's 14 this season, it's easy to believe in a Brentford side who have had nine days rest and preparation compared to their opponent's three.
The Bees are an attractive price to win outright, but backing Villa to nick a goal in the process – which they almost always do – stretches the odds nicely.
Accumulator odds: 9/1

Chelsea make verbal enquiry for Lyon winger Malick Fofana

Chelsea have made a verbal enquiry for Lyon winger Malick Fofana. The Premier League club have made their interest known for the 20-year-old Belgium international. He is among a number of options being considered and conversations are ongoing. Fofana joined Lyon from Belgian side Gent in January 2024 and he is contracted to the Ligue 1 club until 2028. Advertisement He provided 11 goals and six assists across 41 appearances in all competitions during the 2024-25 campaign, including six goals during Lyon's run to the Europa League quarter-finals. Fofana earned his first Belgium call up in October 2024 and has been capped once at senior level. Chelsea are in the market for a wide player this summer following the decision not to make Jadon Sancho's loan move from Manchester United permanent. A striker was another priority in the window with Liam Delap arriving from Ipswich Town earlier this month.

Lippi breaks silence as Gattuso appointed Italy coach

Marcello Lippi briefly commented on Gennaro Gattuso's appointment as Italy head coach: 'I am so happy for Rino, I'm sure he'll do really well.' Gattuso and Lippi won the 2006 World Cup with the Italy national team, and the former Azzurri boss commented on the 47-year-old's appointment as the new head coach of La Nazionale. The former midfielder will be tasked with qualifying for the World Cup, a target the Azzurri failed to fulfil in 2018 and 2022. Gattuso's processor, Luciano Spalletti, was sacked in the aftermath of a 3-0 loss against Norway in the opening match of the World Cup qualifiers earlier this month. The Azzurri have three points in the opening two games in Group I after a subsequent 2-0 win over Moldova.

Huddersfield sign Villa defender Feeney on loan

Huddersfield have signed Aston Villa defender Josh Feeney on a season-long loan. The 20-year-old becomes the fifth signing of the summer for the League One outfit and a third defensive acquisition inside the last week following the arrivals of left-back Sean Roughan and centre-back Josh Low. Advertisement Feeney, who joined Villa's academy in 2021, brings valuable experience of third-tier football having spent last season on loan with Shrewsbury Town. Manager Lee Grant thanked the Premier League club for trusting his side with one of their "bright young talents". "Josh is a young talented defender who has a season of experience playing in this division, proving he can deal with the demands of a busy schedule," Grant told the club website. "He is ready and capable of making another step up as he becomes another addition to our back line." Feeney is the fifth signing of Huddersfield's summer following the previous two defensive acquisitions, midfielder Ryan Ledson and winger Marcus Harness.
