A New Odisha is taking shape: Mohan Charan Majhi
As the BJP govt completes one year in office, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi talks about his accomplishments and challenges along with the roadmap for Odisha's growth and development in the coming years, in an interview with Siba Mohanty & SN Agragami.
Your government has completed one year in office with a slogan, 'Barsa Ek, Uplapdhi Anek'. What is the biggest upalabdhi (achievement) of your government in the last 12 months ?
June 12 was a historic day in the political history of Odisha. People changed the government of 24 years and gave us a mandate to take Odisha in the path of development in all fields. Out of the 21 promises made by us, our government has fulfilled 11 promises, which is more than half. The results are for all to see. Let me give you one example. In Subhadra Yojana, we had promised to give a voucher of Rs 50,000 to women and have already provided Rs 10,000 to nearly 1 crore women in two half-yearly installments. This is not a cash dole to create vote-bank. Our aim is women empowerment. We have got ground reports, and you will be pleasantly surprised that 90 per cent of beneficiaries have utilised the money in a gainful manner.
On the path of fulfilling the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have increased the number of Lakhpati Didis from just three lakh to 16.6 lakh in one year and achieved the first position in the country. The prime minister himself has praised the achievement of Odisha in the NITI Aayog meeting.
Our second priority was the farmer. Within one hour of taking oath, in the first cabinet meeting we approved input assistance of Rs 800 per quintal over and above the MSP, which has already reached 17 lakh farmers. For the youth, we have provided 28,000 jobs. Nearly 30,000 youths have also got jobs in private sector.
The previous government had organised three Make-in-Odisha conclaves. But in only one Utkarsh Odisha conclave organised by our government on January 28 and 29, we generated more proposals and signed more MoUs than all the previous three combined. We received proposals of Rs 17 lakh crore, signed MoUs of Rs 13 lakh crore with employment opportunities for 13 lakh youths of the state.
The government has gained the confidence of people by doing all this work. We are committed to take Odisha to greater heights economically, socially and politically. We have fulfilled many promises during the year, which is why the slogan 'Barsha Ek, Upalabdhi Anek'. A New Odisha is taking shape.

UGC gives letter of intent to five foreign universities to open campuses in Maharashtra: Fadnavis
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 14 (ANI): The University Grants Commission has given a letter of intent to five foreign universities to establish their campuses in Maharashtra, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This is part of the 'Mumbai Rising - Creating an International Education City' initiative. The Chief Minister was speaking to the media after participating in the Granting of Letters of Intent (LOIs) ceremony along with Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Fadnavis said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the National Education Policy has opened doors for knowledge in India. 'UGC has given a letter of intent to five universities. Their campuses will be constructed in Maharashtra,' Fadnavis told reporters. The five foreign universities, which have been given a letter of intent, are the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Western Australia, and the IED European Institute of Design. 'The five universities are the University of Aberdeen, the University of York, the Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Western Australia, and the IED European Institute of Design... Under PM Modi, NEP has opened doors for knowledge in India,' the Chief Minister said. The initiative, led by the Government of Maharashtra with support from CIDCO, aims to develop an International Education City near the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The education hub, spanning a 5-km radius, will be the first of its kind in the country, offering students access to high-quality international education within India. Meanwhile, the Roads and Traffic Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the flyover connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg (Vikhroli West) to the Eastern Express Highway (Vikhroli East). Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis shared a video of the flyover on social media and wrote that during the monsoon, citizens face traffic jams in the area, so the government has ordered that the flyover be opened for the public without waiting for an official ceremony. 'Heartiest congratulations to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation for completing the very important 615-meter bridge connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in Vikhroli to the Eastern Expressway! During the monsoon season, there are often traffic jams on Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, causing inconvenience to the citizens. Considering this, I, along with my colleagues Deputy Chief Minister Eknathrao Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajitdada Pawar, have decided to open this bridge for the citizens without waiting for any official ceremony and have also given orders to that effect,' the Chief Minister said. CM Fadnavis added that he began the work for this flyover under his tenure in 2018, and Rs 104.77 have been spent on the project. (ANI)

"All nations condemned act of terrorism in Pahalgam": BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad
Patna (Bihar) [India], June 14 (ANI): BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, who recently led an all-party delegation on a multi-national tour as part of India's big diplomatic outreach, said on Saturday that the international community has supported India's global outreach on Operation Sindoor, with all nations condemning terrorism in one voice. Addressing a press conference in Patna, the BJP MP stated that terrorism is like cancer, which is affecting the whole world. Prasad said, 'All nations spoke in one voice and condemned the act of terrorism in Pahalgam. When we met them (representatives of different countries), they said that 'no form of terrorism is acceptable'. We are not against the citizens of Pakistan -- our problem is that the generals of Pakistan run the nation, and to fulfil their own agenda, they misuse these terrorists. Terrorism is like a cancer that is affecting the entire world.' Prasad further said that India is marching ahead through democracy and the world is recognising and respecting the country's growing economic strength. He said, 'Pakistan and India were born on the same date in 1947... Today, India is the fourth largest economy in the world, whereas Pakistan is going around begging with a bowl in its hand. India is developing through democracy. The world is impressed by India's economic development. Wherever we went, they requested us to build economic ties with India. The world is respecting India's economic power. That is why they are also listening our stance.' Highlighting details about the recent all-party delegation visit, the BJP MP said, 'We were asked (during all-party delegation visit) why the operation was named 'Operation Sindoor'? We said the 'sindoor' of our daughters and sisters was wiped off, so we named it 'Operation Sindoor' to destroy those terrorists... People appreciated this...' Earlier on June 10, BJP MP Prasad said that the delegation had conveyed to global leaders India's firm policy of zero tolerance against cross-border terrorism. 'Pakistan is not only a state in denial, but the military-terrorist nexus has become a deadly combination,' the BJP MP told reporters. 'When we talked about history, we talked about how Pakistan is in the hands of Generals... The world needs to understand that Pakistan is in the grip of a military-general nexus whose dirty job is done by the terrorists and terrorist camps. In Pakistan's new setup, the Generals use terrorism as a proxy to keep themselves relevant,' he stated. The operation was launched on May 7 in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam by Pakistan-sponsored militants that claimed 26 lives and injured several others. Following retaliation from Pakistan, the Indian Armed Forces carried out targeted strikes against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. AAP-led Punjab govt, Punjab Congress, Akali Dal object to 'One Nation One Election' in meeting with JPC
CHANDIGARH: The AAP-led Punjab government, Punjab Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal registered their strong objections to the 'One Nation One Election' proposal tabled by the BJP-led central government during a meeting with members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Saturday. After attending a meeting convened by the Joint Parliamentary Committee under the chairmanship of PP Choudhary, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema described it as a direct assault on the fundamental structure and spirit of the Constitution of India as framed by Babasaheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar. Cheema said that he, along with AAP State President Aman Arora, completely rejected the move. "This proposal by the BJP-led Union government is a hidden agenda designed to destroy the federal structure of the nation as enshrined in the Constitution of India, meticulously architected by Baba Saheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar," he said. Referring to the amendments in the proposed Bill, Cheema said that the suggested amendments would effectively render the tenures of state assemblies subject to the discretion of the Union government, an alarming overreach incompatible with the federal framework enshrined in the Constitution. He said that this bill will further encourage the misuse of Article 356 and 360 by the Union government. As per section 5 of part 2, if the Election Commission is of the opinion that the elections to any Legislative Assembly cannot be conducted along with the general election to the House of the People, it may make a recommendation to the President, to declare by an order, that the election to that Legislative Assembly may be conducted at a later date. Citing this amendment, Cheema said that the BJP's One Nation One Election concept would ultimately backfire, as it would enable the Union government to conduct state elections at its convenience a year or two after general elections, rather than fulfilling the purpose of the proposal as being publicised.
