Time of India5 days ago
Bengaluru: A 26-year-old man from Tamil Nadu, who allegedly harassed a married woman on Instagram, stabbed her cousin in the throat after being confronted over his behaviour. The incident took place near HAL Market in Bengaluru on July 17.
The HAL police arrested the accused, Selva Karthik, the next day.
Karthik, a resident of Uttangarai in Krishnagiri district about 90km from Bengaluru and a native of Tirupathur, was booked for attempt to murder under BNS section 109. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
The injured, Prashanth, 28, is a resident of Kaggadasapura and works as a salesman for a private firm. Police said Karthik attacked him while riding pillion on a scooter.
Prashanth sustained a severe neck injury, but is now out of ICU and recovering after a surgery.

According to the complaint filed by Shekar V, 56, a mason from Tiruppur, the harassment began when his elder daughter befriended Karthik on Instagram a few months ago. His daughter, who has been married for five years and lives in east Bengaluru, said Karthik started harassing her to accept his love.
In June, while she was visiting her parental home, Karthik arrived and confronted her in front of her family for not responding to his calls.

The family warned him to stay away, and she returned to her husband's house.
However, Karthik continued calling her and threatened to kill her family if she refused to marry him. On July 17, after another threat call, Shekar and his nephew Prashanth went to meet Karthik at his request near a BMTC bus stop in Malleshpalya.
Karthik insisted on talking at Vibhuthipura. While riding triples on a scooter — Shekar riding, Prashanth in the middle, and Karthik at the back — Karthik suddenly announced that he intended to kill them and slit Prashanth's throat. He then attempted to stab Shekar but fled when bystanders approached.
Prashanth was rushed to a hospital for emergency treatment. After his arrest the next day, Karthik told investigators that he had bought the knife specifically to attack them.

Hearing postponed for accused in Baja surfer triple murder

Four Mexicans facing charges in relation to the killing of one American and two Australian surfers last year had yet another preliminary hearing delayed Friday as relatives of the victims looked on via video. The hearing did confirm that the cases of the four accused will advance separately.(Representative Image) The hearing in the Baja California beach city of Ensenada reset hearing dates for the four – two of whom were present, while the other two watched via video from their respective prisons. Brothers Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia and American Jack Carter Rhoad had apparently stopped to surf the breaks between Punta San José, about 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of Ensenada, and La Bocana, further north on the coast, in April of last year. They were attacked at their campsite and their bodies were dumped into a well about 4 miles (6 kilometers) away. The hearing did confirm that the cases of the four accused will advance separately. The man facing the most serious charges had his hearing rescheduled for Aug. 9, while the other three were set for Nov. 13, to give them more time to try to reach deals with prosecutors.

RG Kar Victim's Father Calls Aparajita Bill 'Deceptive,' Accuses Police Of Evidence Tampering

The father of the RG Kar rape and murder victim accused Kolkata Police of tampering with evidence and failing to act in his daughter's case, while reacting to the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill. Speaking to ANI, he said, "... Kolkata Police did nothing in my daughter's case except for evidence tampering... There was no provision for evidence tampering in this bill. It will not matter to us whether the bill is passed or not..." He also criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that the bill was introduced in the Assembly to "deceive the people" of the state. "...The Chief Minister introduced this bill in the Assembly to deceive the people of West Bengal. She also sent it to the Governor and the President. But they rejected the bill, which is a good thing," he said. On Thursday, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose sent back the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024, to the state government. The bill proposes the death penalty or life imprisonment for those convicted of rape and seeks to amend sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the new criminal code. The West Bengal Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed the Aparajita Bill on September 3, 2024. The Bill was sent to President Droupadi Murmu by the Governor on September 6, 2024. The legislation was passed following the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, which provides for the death penalty in five categories of offences -- rape, rape by a police officer or public servant, rape causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state, gang rape, and repeat offenders. According to Raj Bhawan officials, the bill proposes making the death penalty mandatory in cases where the victim dies or is left in a vegetative state under Section 66 of the BNS. The Bill also proposes to delete Section 65 of the BNS, 2023, thereby eliminating the distinction in punishment for the rape of women under 16 and under 12 years of age, according to Raj Bhawan. The development comes amid repeated appeals by the Trinamool Congress government urging the Union government to grant assent to the Bill. A delegation of Trinamool Congress MPs met President Droupadi Murmu on February 13 to press for early approval of the legislation. Certain legal experts had described the Aparajita Bill as a knee-jerk response by the West Bengal government. Earlier, the father of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder victim spoke out against the alleged gangrape case in Kolkata's law college, expressing his frustration and disappointment with the recurring incidents of violence. He accused the government of having a significant role to play in preventing such incidents and that the accused should be severely punished. He said, "Such incidents are happening again and again. After what happened with my daughter, many people came out on the streets in protest. Even after that, such incidents continue to occur. People inside the college are committing such incidents. The government has a significant role in this, which is why all these incidents are happening. All three people arrested are from the TMC, so this political party should ensure that such incidents do not happen again. The accused should be severely punished."

In bail denial to ‘Instagram Queen' cop Amandeep Kaur; Punjab & Haryana HC cites ‘grave' charges, public trust breach

CHANDIGARH: Declining bail to a Punjab Police constable, widely known as the 'Instagram queen,' in a corruption case, the Punjab and Haryana high court has observed that the allegations against herare grave and attract serious concern, particularly in light of the position of public trust held by a serving police official. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The HC was also of the view that the nature of the allegations, the magnitude of the disproportion, the possibility of further recovery and scrutiny, and the involvement of the petitioner in other criminal cases necessitate a thorough investigation that would be hampered if she was released on bail at this stage. Justice Manjari NehruKaul, in her order released Friday, dismissed the bail petition of Amandeep Kaur, also dubbed the 'Thar wali constable' due to her lavish lifestyle. Kaur has already been dismissed from the Punjab Police. The HC observed, 'Thematerial placed before this court, including the financial analysis chart submitted with the FIR, reveals a substantial and prima facie unjustified increase in wealth during the check period.' The court found the defence's arguments regarding anarbitrary check period unpersuasive, particularly in light of overall financial inflows and Kaur's alleged involvement in two other criminal cases, including one under the NDPS Act. Justice Kaul further noted that explanations offeredby Kaur's counsel regarding alternative income sources, such as brand endorsements or social media monetisation, were neither substantiated nor supported by credible evidence of lawful income generation. Kaur had sought bail in acorruption case registered against her on May 26 at the vigilance bureau police station, Bathinda. She is accused of acquiring assets disproportionate to her known sources of income during a check period from April 1, 2018, to March 31, 2025.
