Rangers look to get back on winning track vs. Athletics

Reuters2 days ago
July 21 - The Texas Rangers aim to get back above .500 when they continue a nine-game homestand by hosting the Athletics on Monday in the first of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas.
The Athletics will send left-hander Jacob Lopez (3-5, 4.20 ERA) to the mound to start while their American League West rivals will counter with rookie right-hander Jack Leiter (5-6, 4.37).
Texas comes into the series after taking two games from AL Central-leading Detroit over the weekend but dropping the final game of the set 2-1 on Sunday evening. The Rangers collected just 12 total hits in the three games (four in each contest) but gave the league-leading Tigers all they wanted and more.
The Athletics lost twice in three games in Cleveland, most recently an 8-2 setback on Sunday. The loss was made even worse by the injury suffered by outfielder Denzel Clarke as he ran the bases in the eighth inning. He was lifted from the game with right hip discomfort and is listed as day-to-day pending further evaluation.
Leiter has been enigmatic this season, starting off the year with four wins over his first nine starts before enduring a stretch of six starts with four losses and no victories. That swoon ended in his most recent outing as Leiter allowed three runs on five hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings in a game the Rangers won 7-3 at Houston on July 11.
"Not in a negative way, but there's so many things I can do better," Leiter said. "I think just the room for improvement feels very high. It's just a matter of continuing to get better, learn these small lessons, learn from the guys."
Leiter has not recorded a decision and has amassed a 4.91 ERA in two career appearances (one start) against the Athletics. Both of those came last season as he surrendered six runs (four of them earned) on nine hits and three walks in 7 1/3 innings.
Lopez has made 14 appearances for the Athletics in 2025, with 10 of them starts. He has been solid over his past seven starts, going 3-1 and allowing more than two runs only twice of those seven games.
Lopez yielded two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five in winning his most recent start at home over Toronto on July 12. He has been successful because of his overall command of the strike zone, by working the count to his advantage with plenty of first-pitch strikes and -- for the most part --avoiding walks.
"I only throw low-90s or whatever people want to say, but I have five pitches that I like to mix in," Lopez said. "I think that's a huge part of pitching. I'm just keeping hitters off-balance and trying to be smart."
Lopez has faced the Rangers twice in his career, with both of those appearances this season. He threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief at home on April 22 before absorbing a loss a week later on the road when he allowed three runs on six hits and a season-high four walks over 2 2/3 innings.

Rangers vs Panathinaikos player ratings: 8/10 rescue act, the visionary, dream debut and drowsy display

Rangers will go into next week's Champions League second leg qualifier with the advantage after a pair thunderous strikes helped them secure a 2-0 win over 10-man Panathinaikos at Ibrox. Despite home goalkeeper Jack Butland being forced into numerous saves in the opening throws of the game, it was 18-year-old Curtis that swung the game in Rangers favour, smashing smashed home from long range in the 52nd minute to secure a narrow win on Russell Martin's first competitive game in charge of the Glasgow giants. Panathinaikos were dealt an even bigger blow just six minutes after Curtis' strike when midfielder Georgios Vagiannidis was sent off for his second booking of the game, and the Light Blues took full advantage when debutant Djeidi Gassama lashed home with his first touch of the ball. Rangers will now take a short break from competitive action as they return to Ibrox this weekend to face EFL Championship promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough as part of their pre-season schedule, before they head to Athens for next week's second leg against Rui Vitória's side on Wednesday 30 July. Here's how The Scotsman rated the performance of each Rangers player in the 2-0 against Panathinaikos at Ibrox: 1 . Jack Butland - 8 Saved his teammates blushes several times, making a huge save just before the ten minute mark to claw the ball out of the corner of the net following Duricic's smart header. He then pulled off a smart reaction save when Raskin's dallied in his own penalty area before repeating the trick early in the second-half. A drowsy looking performance at times from the usually consistent captain, but improved as the game wore on and fired in some dangerous crosses. | SNS Group Photo: SNS Group Photo Sales 3 . John Souttar - 6 Made a good block on the edge of his area, but was slightly slack in his passing at times. But won the bulk of his aerial duels, and tried to prompt attacks from the back. | PA Photo: PA Photo Sales 4 . Nasser Djiga - 6 Gave the ball away in a dangerous position and almost cost the team a cheap goal. Strong otherwise, and assured, even against tough opposition. Rangers player ratings as Curtis, Gassama & Butland shine

James Tavernier 6 Hamstrung a little by adapted shape and style under the new manager. Far less involved in bursting down the right flank, instead encouraged to invert and cut inside into a central midfield position. Defended fairly well when required and set demands vocally on the pitch. John Souttar 7 A typical John Souttar performance in Europe from the Scotland centre-back. Threw himself at anything and everything in the box and made some crucial blocks when Rangers were under pressure in the first half. Booked after 28 minutes, took one for the team as Panathinaikos looked to counter. Nasser Djiga 6 Thrown in for his debut in a high-pressure situation and with clear instructions to play out from the back. Guided through by John Souttar and willing to put himself about. Had to be bailed out after being robbed of the ball on the edge of the box but rallied to regain his composure. Max Aarons 6 Schoehorned into left-back instead of Jefte, who was named on the bench. Trusted by Martin and did fairly well on his debut. Another was instructed to take on an inverted role, which clearly needs more work in the coming weeks, but carried out his duties well. Nicolas Raskin 7 A swashbuckling performance from the Belgian, who looked the most likely to drive Rangers forward when he picked up the ball. Frustrated for periods at a lack of possession, but was always amongst the first to engage with opposition players. Burst into the box on a number of occasions, but was just missing the final ball into the box. Will be key for Rangers again this season. Mohamed Diomande 6 Not one of his most impressive outings from Rangers, but far from a bad night for Diomande. A little bit lost at times in the midfield but grew into the contest and started to keep things ticking for Rangers, particularly in the second half. Played the full 90 in a tireless display in the centre of the park. Joe Rothwell 7 A solid introduction to life at Rangers for the midfielder. Nothing flashy, but did a lot of the running and some dirty work in the centre to try and take control of the play. Clearly, more to come from the Englishman but he can be pleased with his efforts in a first bow at Ibrox against tricky opposition. Kieran Dowell 7 Looks to have played himself back into the fold at Rangers after his loan at Birmingham last season. Deployed on the right but always desperate to come inside to affect the play where possible. Nearly scored himself with a looping header, but it landed on the roof of the net in the moments after the opener. Findlay Curtis 8 Inclusion in the starting XI raised more than a few eyes inside Ibrox but proved himself throughout. Bursting with determination to work in both directions from the left. Provided moment of quality to curl home, helped by a deflection, from outside the box to send Rangers ahead. Danilo 6 The Brazilian was given the nod in the sole striker role after an electric pre-season. Was unable to continue his scoring streak as he had limited clear sight of goal during his time on the pitch. Unfortunate to see one big effort was blocked and turned wide after a decent connection. Djeidi Gassma (for Curtis, 74) 7 On the park for just four minutes before making his impact. Doubled lead with a terrific goal, cutting inside from left and then reversing strike into bottom corner. Ibrox support audibly excited every time he touched the ball with Panathinaikos defenders unable to get close to him. Hamza Igamane (for Dowell, 74) 4 Close to a third as he leapt into the air at the back post but unable to get a good connection on the ball as it bounced harmlessly wide. Cyriel Dessers (for Danilo, 74) 4 Didn't have any real openings after his introduction. Still getting up to fitness. Nedim Bajrami (for Rothwell, 86) 3 Delayed introduction after repeated issues with his socks before coming on. Not majorly involved.
