Santa Catarina – Sydney's high-end Mexican restaurant and mezcal bar and sibling to Bondi's Carbón – is currently hosting renowned Mexican chef Diana López del Río for a short-term residency. The owner and head chef of MUX in Mexico City – once recognised by Eater as one of the city's essential dining spots – Diana brings with her two decades of experience and an incredible gift of storytelling through food. Don't come expecting a burrito. Diana specialises in regional Mexican cuisine – food like nothing else you'll find in Sydney right now.
Mark this down: On Wednesday, July 2, Santa Catarina will be offering a one-off special tasting menu experience by Diana for lunch and dinner, where she will guide you through each course, giving you insight into her culture and heritage – complete with matching drinks, live music and Diana's signature mole that takes two days to prepare and features more than 30 ingredients.
'This is not Tex-Mex. This is not Baja. This is Oaxacan food, the way it's made at home, by hands that remember,' says Diana. 'Every dish is a story not just of flavour, but of survival, identity and resistance.'
Can't make Wednesday? No worries. Diana's menu will be available to the public at Santa Catarina from July 7. Enjoy things like chalupitas de pato (lightly fried corn tortillas with duck); verduras y queso en escabeche (zippy pickled vegetables and cheese); pink snapper con mole alcaparrado (snapper served with a tangy caper mole); pollo al mezcal (mezcal-marinated chicken); sope Ayala (a thick corn tortilla loaded with salsa and beans); and calabaza en dulce (a traditional dessert featuring candied pumpkin). We got a sneak peek and can say Diana's food is vibrant, rich and spectacular.
Of course, a nip or two of mezcal is not mandatory, but it's encouraged.

Diana Rigg's final 'brilliant' role in All Creatures Great and Small marked heartbreaking end to acting career

Diana Rigg was best known for her roles in Game of Thrones and All Creatures Great and Small, and she died in September 2020 Dame Diana Rigg portrayed Mrs Pumphrey in Channel 5's beloved series, All Creatures Great and Small, when it debuted during the coronavirus lockdown. The heartwarming family programme offered viewers a welcome escape during those difficult months. ‌ The quirky character Mrs Pumphrey served as one of Siegfried Farnon's (portrayed by Samuel West) patients and absolutely adored her cherished pooch, Tricki-Woo. Dame Diana passed away on September 10, 2020, aged 82, with her death occurring just days following the programme's inaugural series launch. ‌ The legendary performer died at her daughter Rachael Stirling's London residence, succumbing to cancer after receiving her diagnosis in March of that same year, reports the Express. ‌ Speaking to The Guardian, Rachael recalled: "I will never forget the look in my mother's eyes that day near the end; the 'north face of the Eiger', as my family christened it. "You have seen it in Game of Thrones, that look. As the Queen of Thorns, she used it to great effect. Fixing me with it for the first time in these last months, she said: 'Rachie, it's gone on too long - push me over the edge'." Her performance in All Creatures Great and Small was her final television appearance, bringing the curtain down on her remarkable career. She honed her craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art between 1955 and 1957, before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company several years afterwards. Her last cinema appearance came in Last Night in Soho, where she portrayed Alexandra Collins. The movie hit screens in 2021 following her passing. ‌ Her final television performance was as Mother Dorothea in Black Narcissus, which also aired posthumously. After Diana's death, Patricia Hodge stepped into her shoes for All Creatures Great and Small. The programme's cast honoured Diana's memory, with James Herriot star Nicholas Ralph telling PBS: "She was brilliant. "Any anxiety you may have had before meeting her was completely washed away as soon as you did, because she was so lovely and easy to chat to. "She had a twinkle in her eye, still had a wicked sense of humour, and she kept everyone on their toes."

Behind the Counter: The guacamole maestro making magic at Ocaso

Step out of the spotlight and into the soul of the city, one counter at a time. Behind The Counter is a Time Out Johannesburg series celebrating the real people who power the city, from artists and baristas to tailors and traders. These are the everyday legends giving Joburg its soul, one story at a time. If you've been to Ocaso in Rosebank and ordered the guacamole and momma's chips, chances are you've met Thabo Ferguson, and if you haven't, you've probably seen him on TikTok. Known for his charismatic table-side guacamole preparation, Thabo has turned a simple appetiser into a full-on performance. As a musical theatre and education graduate from Texas State University, Thabo never imagined he'd find himself in the restaurant industry. 'My career challenges started late last year, and I found myself in the service industry with no experience whatsoever,' he explains 'But a girl's got to do what a girl's got to do,' he adds jokingly. Challenges aside, Thabo believes the skills he's acquired through his education translate perfectly. 'People think musical theatre is just about standing on stage and performing, but performance comes into play in any job. I'm just using what I've learned, entertaining and engaging people, but now it's for my everyday guests.' Talking to Thabo after his guac-prep performance, I'm instantly struck by his lively, passionate presence, the kind of energy that draws in even the shyest guests. He approaches every table with warmth, humour, and a deep knowledge of the menu, which, he says, is the real secret. 'It's about personality, passion, and knowing your stuff. When you know what you're talking about, you're more confident, and guests are more open to interacting with you.' When asked for his menu recommendation, Thabo doesn't hesitate, 'The enchiladas. If you're at a Mexican restaurant, you have to try the Mexican dishes. From the enchiladas to the empanadas and tacos, it's all about the Mexican fiesta, and we do it so well here.' Thabo's first tableside guacamole performance wasn't something he planned or even realised would go viral. 'I didn't even know I was on TikTok until people started coming in saying they wanted to be served by me. I looked up the video, and it blew my mind. At the time, we were all new, the staff, the management, and we were just figuring things out. But I did it anyway, and it took off.' Outside of work, Thabo teaches Latin American ballroom dance classes and continues to share his love of performance. He credits his colleagues for making his work at Ocaso such a joy. 'I owe everything I am in this profession to the people I work with. They've been so supportive and amazing. It takes teamwork to put on a show.' For visitors unfamiliar with Rosebank, Thabo recommends starting with a meal at Ocaso, then exploring the nearby spots: Q Lounge for a winelands experience in Johannesburg or Obscura for high-energy fun. There's also the local park for a stroll, and on weekends, Ocaso itself transforms into a lively party spot with DJs, sunset views, and yes, even free Don Julio tequila shots. Working in the service industry might have been an unexpected detour for Thabo, but it's one that's led him to the perfect stage, one where every bowl of guacamole is an opening act and every table is a new audience. At Ocaso, he's found his spotlight, his people, and his rhythm. So whether you're a local or just passing through Rosebank, start your night with Thabo's tableside guac, because in this show, you don't just watch, you're part of it.

Expert makes bombshell Diana claim about Prince Harry and William's ongoing feud

Princess Diana would have been "a peacemaker" and ended the "cold war" between her two sons Prince William and Prince Harry, a royal biographer has claimed A royal biographer has suggested that Princess Diana would have played the role of a "peacemaker" amidst the ongoing feud between Prince William and Prince Harry. ‌ Andrew Morton, renowned for his documentation of the late Princess of Wales' life, claims that the continuing tension between Diana's sons is a "great loss for the monarchy", as he states that she would have 'put an end to the cold war' between the princes. ‌ Despite their lack of communication following years of public criticism from the Sussexes, both William and Harry continue to honour their late mother's legacy through various charitable endeavours, as they gear up to commemorate the 28th anniversary of Diana's death. ‌ This follows Prince Harry's recent admission that he still considers himself part of the Royal Family. When Princess Diana tragically passed away on August 31, 1997, William and Harry, then aged 15 and 12 respectively, were united in their sorrow. Fast forward to the present day, and the brothers couldn't be more distant, but Royal biographer Andrew Morton believes that Diana would have been instrumental in building bridges, reports the Mirror. Speaking to People, he said: "Diana always used to say she had two boys for a reason - the younger would be there to support the older in the lonely task as future King. There is no doubt Diana would have tried to act as a peacemaker between them. If she had been around, they would have worked things out in a different way." He added: "We all remember the days when Harry and William were joshing with one another, and it all seemed set for their relationship and the future - that Harry, as Diana always used to say, would be William's wingman. It's a great loss for the monarchy." ‌ Relations between William and Harry deteriorated in 2020 when Harry and wife Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties and moved to California. The divide only widened following the Sussexes' 2021 sit-down with Oprah Winfrey and Harry's 2023 tell-all book Spare, both of which took aim at senior members of 'the Firm'. According to Andrew Morton: "Things were said that sparked the initial rift, and it's never healed." ‌ Harry himself reflected this view during a BBC interview in May, stating: "Some members of my family will never forgive me." Harry has been vocal about his desire for reconciliation with his relatives. Speculation about a potential peace deal emerged last month when senior advisers to both Harry and King Charles were seen at a London meeting, though William's team were reportedly excluded from the gathering. Insiders have suggested that Harry's phone calls and texts to William have been ignored, with Robert Lacey, author of Battle of Brothers, explaining: "They both deeply believe that they're fighting for profound points of principle." ‌ Whilst a royal reunion remains elusive, countless supporters continue to wish for the brothers to make amends, with many believing it would honour Diana's memory. A source close to the Royal household expressed: "This is the sadness of it - they aren't supporting each other like they should be. That's what any mother would want - that they are there for each other." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
