Reserve Bank of India
's latest economic outlook.
The central bank released the Survey of Professional Forecasters on Macroeconomic Indicators (95th Round) on Wednesday.
According to the apex bank's findings, 'Merchandise exports and imports are projected to grow by 1.2% and 2.5%, respectively, during 2025-26.'
Looking ahead to 2026-27, merchandise exports are projected to grow by 4.9%, while imports are expected to climb by 6.0%.
This widening gap in trade could weigh on India's external balance, ANI cited the report. The current account deficit (CAD) is projected at 0.8% of GDP at current market prices for 2025-26, rising slightly to 0.9% in 2026-27.
On the broader economy, the survey expects India's real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to grow by 6.4% in 2025-26, slightly lower than the RBI's official forecast of 6.5%. In FY27, the figure is expected to rise to 6.7%.
The panelists foresee GDP growth ranging between 6.0% to 7.0% in 2025-26, and between 6.1% to 7.7% in 2026-27. The highest probability has been assigned to GDP growth in the 6.0% – 6.9% range for 2025-26 and 6.5% – 6.9% range for 2026-27.
On the expenditure front, the real private final consumption expenditure (PFCE) is expected to rise by 6.5% in 2025-26 and 6.9% in 2026-27. Meanwhile, real gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) is projected to grow by 6.8% and 7.2% over the two years, respectively.
Coming to inflation, the annual headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) based rate is estimated at 3.1% for 2025-26, increasing to 4.4% in 2026-27.
The survey further showed that in the second quarter of FY26, CPI inflation, not including food and beverages, pan, tobacco, intoxicants and fuel and light, will remain at 4.4%. Furthermore, in the following quarters, it will fall in the range of 4.3%-4.5% in the following quarters.

Credit growth rises to 10% in July 25 fortnight, deposit growth at 10.2%
Credit growth in the fortnight ended 25 July inched up to 10 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y), while deposits during this period continued to outpace credit growth, rising 10.2 per cent Y-o-Y, latest data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed. During the same period last year, banking system credit grew 13.7 per cent, while deposits grew 10.6 per cent. In the previous fortnight (11 July), credit growth stood at 9.8 per cent and deposit growth was 10.1 per cent. In absolute terms, outstanding credit in the banking system stood at Rs 185.02 trillion in the fortnight ended 25 July, while outstanding deposits stood at Rs 233.50 trillion. During the fortnight, credit rose by Rs 31,979 crore, and deposits grew by Rs 23,573 crore. 'The credit and deposit growth is expected to linger around similar levels. In case of credit growth, retail credit growth is cooling down across segments barring gold loans. Also, the bond market is offering better yield — this has shifted corporate credit demand away from banks. On the other hand, banks are finding it difficult to source funds due to the alternative avenues available to customers,' said Saurabh Bhalerao, Associate Director and Head — BFSI Research, CareEdge. Rating agencies estimate credit growth this year (FY26) to be around 11.5–12.5 per cent, but there could be some revision to the projections.

The Reserve Bank fined ICICI Bank for violations related to property valuation and current account operations, citing non-compliance without impacting customer transactions Mumbai The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 75 lakh on ICICI Bank Limited for violating certain regulatory directions on 'Valuation of Properties – Empanelment of Valuers' and 'Opening of Current Accounts by Banks – Need for Discipline', the central bank said in a notification on Friday. The central bank said it found that ICICI Bank had failed to conduct property valuations through independent valuers in certain mortgage loans and had opened or maintained current accounts in breach of regulatory norms. The action was taken on account of deficiencies in regulatory compliance and does not question the validity of any customer transactions. It also does not preclude further action against the bank.

RBI asks AU promoter to move holding to NOFHC for final nod as universal bank
Mumbai, Aug 8 (PTI) The Reserve Bank has asked AU Small Finance Bank promoters Sanjay Agarwal and family to move their holding to a non-operative financial holding company before it gives the nod to start working as a universal bank, officials said on Friday. Agarwal, the founder, managing director and chief executive of the lender, said that even as a universal bank, it will not compete with larger banks but with non-bank finance companies (NBFCs). AU SFB received in-principle approval to operate as a universal bank on Thursday, which will help it access funds at lower costs and also do big-ticket lending. 'I have been given 18 months to get the NOFHC (non-operative financial holding company) in place. Moving the holding into an NOFHC will allow greater flexibility for me to start other financial businesses like asset management or insurance, if we so desire," Agarwal told reporters here. When asked about the price for transferring the shares and the tax liability thereof, Agarwal said there are some mechanics which need to be sorted out in this journey and added that he would like to do it before the 18-month deadline. A senior financial sector official said there is some communication between the central bank and the government over the need for some relief on taxation for such transactions. Explaining the insistence on creating NOFHC, AU's non-executive chairman, HR Khan, a career central banker who served as the Deputy Governor of the RBI, said this is a way to ring fence the bank from any potential troubles so that depositors' money is protected. AU's deputy chief executive and executive director Uttam Tibrewal recalled that the RBI had, in 2016, come out with a regulation on the NOFHC-based sectors and added that all universal banks of the future will have to follow this. Agarwal said he is not interested in hiking his stake in the 1996-incorporated venture beyond the current 22 per cent. Starting as a direct selling agent in 1996, AU transitioned to being a non-bank lender, became an SFB later and finally secured the in-principle nod to operate as a universal bank, the first entity in over a decade to be selected to be one. Agarwal said even as a universal bank, it is not keen to explore big-ticket lending and would rather focus on the smaller-ticket retail loans segment itself, which forms 80 per cent of its Rs 1.17 lakh loan book at present. There will not be any change in business strategies for the next three to five years at least, he said, adding that the bank will come out in a newer avatar to people from April 2027. It will drop the SFB mention from the branding to operate as 'AU Bank" when it starts the journey as a universal lender, Agarwal said, adding that the small finance bank mention makes people wary.
