DENVER (AP) — Willson Contreras homered drove in two runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6-2 victory over the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies on Monday night. The Cardinals ended a three-game losing streak after being swept by Arizona while the Rockies marked their 100th game with their 76th loss. Brendan Donovan and Nolan Arenado hit doubles and joined Jordan Walker with two hits apiece in a 15-hit night. Masyn Winn and Contreras had three hits each. The Rockies took a 2-0 lead in the third, but Contreras hit a solo homer and Winn doubled in Arenado to tie the game in the fourth. Contreras gave St. Louis the lead for good with an RBI single in the fifth. The Cardinals extended their lead on a single by Pedro Pagés and Donovan's sacrifice fly in the sixth. Michael McGreevy (2-1), recalled on Monday to make the start, went seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and no walks with one strikeout. Austin Gomber (0-4) gave up five runs on 11 hits. He struck out six. Mickey Moniak, Brenton Doyle and Adael Amador had two hits each for the Rockies. Key moment Contreras gave the Cardinals their first run with his homer, but it was his single to left in the fifth that brought in the go-ahead run. Key stat The Rockies have to go 18-44 the rest of the season to avoid tying the White Sox's modern-era record of 121 losses set last year. Royals calling up 45-year-old pitcher Rich Hill from minors for a start against the Cubs
CHICAGO (AP) — The Kansas City Royals plan to call up 45-year-old pitcher Rich Hill from the minors for a start against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, marking the left-hander's 21st season in the majors. Hill has been at Triple-A Omaha after joining the Royals as part of an offseason trade. He is 4-4 with a 5.36 ERA in nine starts at Omaha. Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro confirmed the club's plans after Monday night's 12-4 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Hill appeared in four games last season for Boston. A start on Tuesday will make him the oldest active player in baseball. Hill made 11 postseason starts during his four years with the Los Angeles Dodgers, including two World Series starts in 2017 and another in 2018. He went 11-5 during the latter regular season. Mariners call up left-hand pitcher Brandyn Garcia to add to their bullpen
The Mariners selected 25-year-old left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia from Triple-A Tacoma. The announcement was made by Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Justin Hollander on Monday as they optioned right-handed pitcher Juan Burgos to Triple-A Tacoma after their game on Sunday. Seattle selected Garcia in the 11th round of the MLB draft out of Texas A&M University in 2023. He started with the Double-A Arkansas Travelers this season, making a move up to the Tacoma Rainiers last month. Garcia comes to the Mariners with a career ERA of 2.49, 184 strikeouts and 67 walks. This season, his ERA is 3.51 with 42 strikeouts and 17 walks. His first appearance with the Mariners will be his major league debut.
