Bridge under construction collapses in Koyilandy
A bridge under construction with financial support from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) at Thorayi Kadavu near Koyilandy in Kozhikode collapsed on Thursday (August 14, 2025). Labourers present at the site had a narrow escape after a concrete beam in the middle section gave way in the afternoon. Residents who rushed to the spot staged a protest against the Malappuram-based contracting firm P.M.R. Constructions and demanded a comprehensive investigation into the incident. They alleged laxity on the part of Public Works department officials in checking the quality and quantity of materials used in the construction. Senior Revenue and Public Works department officials, along with local administrators, reached the spot for field-level inspections. They said an investigation was under way on the instructions of Public Works Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, and the report would be available soon. The government had sanctioned ₹23.82 crore for constructing the 265-metre-long bridge across the Akalappuzha at Thorayi Kadavu. Work on the multi-crore project began in August 2023. The bridge is expected to connect the Balussery and Koyilandy Assembly constituencies, offering a major advantage to residents. Villagers from Atholi and Chemanchery grama panchayats, who currently depend on boat services to cross the river, had been eagerly awaiting the speedy completion of the project.

The tourism department has entrusted the project management unit, formed as part of the TIM follow-up, to draw up a detailed project framework. This will explore ways to fully utilise the site's tourism potential and integrate it into broader state tourism strategies. The project is slated to be developed through a public-private partnership model. An expression of interest (EoI) inviting construction partners for the project, envisioned as a 'nightlife tourism destination', is expected to be floated in Sept. The project will prioritise eco-friendly infrastructure, with plans for water adventure sports, a children's eco-park and a dedicated cycling track. The focus on sustainability and innovation is expected to make Aanathazhchira a unique model for integrated urban tourism and recreational development, authorities said. Chengannur Revenue Tower construction set to begin
The construction of a Revenue Tower, bringing all major government offices under one roof, is set to begin at Chengannur. It will be inaugurated by Revenue Minister K. Rajan in a function to be held at the old Taluk office compound at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The tower will be constructed on a 40-cent plot near the Chengannur court at a cost of ₹22.12 crore. The facility is designed to house various government services, including those of the RDO, taluk, village and sub-registrar offices, in one place. The decision to build the new facility was prompted by the recognition, during the 2018 floods, of the inadequate infrastructure in the revenue offices, including the taluk office, which had served as the central coordination hub for rescue operations in Chengannur. Following a proposal by Fisheries and Culture Minister Saji Cherian, the project was included in the Rebuild Kerala initiative. The four-storey building, designed in the Kerala architectural style, will have a total floor area of 56,640 sq ft. The ground floor will feature parking, a lobby and storage for voting machines. The first floor will accommodate the registration and village offices. The second floor will house the taluk office and election department, while the third floor will include the RDO conference hall. The fourth floor will accommodate the disaster management office, a conference hall, and a recreation area. In addition, the Revenue Tower will include rooms for storing equipment to be used during natural disasters, droughts, earthquakes or other emergencies; a modern record room; a strong room; a training hall; a cafeteria; and a rest room for staff. Mr. Cherian will preside over the function. Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, Alappuzha District Panchayat president K.G. Rajeshwari, Chengannur municipal chairperson Sobha Varghese, District Collector Alex Varghese and others will attend.
