Padres blow past Giants to complete sweep
Ramon Laureano had a home run among three hits, while Ryan O'Hearn joined Cronenworth and Tatis with two hits apiece for the Padres, who temporarily took over sole possession of first place in the National League West, pending the Los Angeles Dodgers' later game against the Los Angeles Angels.
Six consecutive Padres reached base against Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng (1-2) with one out in the second, with Cronenworth's single making it 2-0 before Tatis' single doubled the count.
Luis Arraez's sacrifice fly, a throwing error by Giants left fielder Heliot Ramos after a double by Manny Machado, and a passed ball by catcher Patrick Bailey capped the inning's scoring.
En route to their fifth straight win, the Padres tacked on three in the fifth on an RBI double by O'Hearn and two-run homer by Laureano, his 17th, and a final tally in the seventh when Tatis drove in his third run with another single.
Pivetta (12-4) took a shutout into the bottom of the seventh before a triple by Jung Hoo Lee and sacrifice fly by Christian Koss completed the game's scoring.
The right-hander was pulled at that point, having limited the Giants to four hits. He walked one and struck out five.
Making his third career appearance, Teng was charged with seven runs (six earned) on four hits in 1 2/3 innings. He walked four and didn't strike out anyone.
Laureano scored three times for the Padres, who have caught and, at least temporarily, passed the Dodgers by winning 14 of their last 17 games. O'Hearn and Xander Bogaerts each scored twice for the visitors.
The double-digit run output was San Diego's sixth of the season.
Lee's triple was the only extra-base hit by the Giants, who were held to one run for the third straight time in the series. San Francisco has lost five straight.
The Padres out-hit the Giants 14-5 in the game and 34-20 in the series.

August 16 - Dominic Canzone delivered the tie-breaking RBI single during a five-run seventh inning Friday night for the visiting Seattle Mariners, who overcame a pair of deficits to defeat the reeling New York Mets 11-9 in the opener of a three-game interleague series. The Mariners laced a team-record nine doubles and finished with 16 hits overall as they improved to 10-3 this month. Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 46th homer in the third, a two-run shot that made him the first player this season to reach 100 RBIs. He added two doubles later in the game. Caleb Ferguson (3-2), the third of seven Mariners pitchers, earned the win with a perfect sixth. Francisco Lindor was 3-for-4 with two homers -- including a leadoff shot -- and four RBIs for the Mets, who have lost 14 of their last 16. August 16 - Salvador Perez hit a tie-breaking home run in the fourth inning, and talented rookie Noah Cameron yielded one run while pitching into the sixth, as the Kansas City Royals extended their home winning streak over the Chicago White Sox to 12 games with a 3-1 victory on Friday night. Perez broke a 1-1 tie with his solo shot off Aaron Civale (3-8), then scored an insurance run via Adam Frazier's double in the sixth for the Royals, who have outscored the White Sox 59-13 during the club's longest home winning streak against any opponent. Maikel Garcia also had a run-scoring single for Kansas City, which has won five of six at home. Cameron (7-5), meanwhile, had his home scoreless innings streak end at 19 1/3 innings when he allowed Lenyn Sosa's two-out homer in the fourth. The left-hander gave up five other hits over 5 1/3 innings. Carlos Estevez struck out the side in the ninth for his 31st save. Civale allowed three runs and eight hits over six innings for Chicago, which has lost nine of 11. The White Sox last win at Kansas City came on Sept. 6, 2023.
