This was supposed to be a very straightforward Ricci's Garage update on fitting another set of off-road wheels to my Land Cruiser, but as you can see by the images on this page, only a single wheel has been attempted so far. Thankfully, we didn't upload any audio to this page, or the rather colourful language that accompanied it would get us into hot water.

Annoyingly, all of this frustration could've been easily avoided had I decided to read any of the 'for sale' advert on eBay. Instead, I decided to employ the immediate excitement approach, glancing over the sizes and hitting buy it now before worrying about any of the boring stuff.
The first red flag should've been the fact the images showed them fitted to a Ford Ranger. A very quick Google showed that Rangers have a PCD (the number of wheel bolts and space between them) of 6x139, which is the same as the new 250 Land Cruiser. What I didn't research was the centre bore size (the hole in the back of the wheel which fits onto the hub), and it turns out Ford Rangers have a much smaller centre bore than Land Cruisers. This was only researched upon fitting the first wheel, and the immediate rage of realising this was likely on par with having Cycling Mikey tap on your window. Especially when it turns out they look properly cool. You might like
What you're looking at is a set of 18x8.5in Evo Corse Dakar wheels – a design which is unsurprisingly used in many heavy-duty motorsports like rallying and Dakar. They're even used on the winning Toyota Hilux, albeit with the correct centre bore dimensions I'd assume. What I love about these wheels is they're brilliantly rugged and give a properly purposeful look to any car, especially when matched with a chunky off-road tyre that'll sound like a swarm of bees following you as you drive up and down the M1. Evo Corse does make Land Cruiser-fitment wheels – in fact it can produce just about every offset and size imaginable – but my impatience and excitement for a bargain meant I'd gambled on these Ranger wheels instead.
Now one option to get them to fit would be to run adapters which allow a different centre bore size on either end. This would be very quick and easy, if it wasn't for the fact the offset was already too aggressive and any additional spacing will make the Land Cruiser look like a very odd 1930s hot rod. The other is to machine the centre bores larger, and after a quick chat with Craig Taylor of Dyno Torque – a man who has previously saved my bacon many times while fixing my Pajero Evolution – that's exactly what we're going to do.

There shouldn't be any downsides to this in terms of strength or stiffness as the size increase is only a few millimetres, and if I were sensible, I'd put some more road-friendly tyres on instead. But clearly that's not going to happen because I'm an idiot, but in a few days' time we can all pretend this little mishap never happened in the first place. Until the next one.

eBay slashes price of ‘pristine' refurb dashcam from £170 to £85

SCORE this car dash cam for half the original price on eBay. The Nextbase 522GW dash cam usually retails for £169.99, but I've spotted it on sale for just £84.99. Nextbase 522GW Dash Cam, £169.99 £84.99 BUY ON EBAY If you're in the market for a dash cam but don't want to pay full price, now's the time to make a move. This eBay refurb deal gets you the popular Nextbase 522GW Dash Cam for just £85, a big drop from its original £170 price tag. There's real value in shopping refurbished tech, especially when the devices are as well-vetted as this one. It's no scratched-up hand-me-down; this Nextbase unit has been professionally refurbished to meet the original manufacturer's standards. That means it's been cleaned, inspected, and restored to full working condition by Nextbase or a certified partner. It's rated as being in 'pristine' condition, comes boxed in original or new packaging, and includes all accessories, so you'll hardly be able to tell it's not new. And these days, a dash cam is a smart addition to your car set-up. Be it your day-to-day commute or heading off on a road trip, it offers peace of mind and reliable footage if things go wrong. With summer holidays in full swing, many Brits are hitting the roads abroad, and it's easy to slip up with avoidable holiday driving mistakes. From unfamiliar road rules to wrong turns, having a dash cam rolling can cover you if you get into a scrape. It'll help protect you in case of disputes, and can even assist insurers in sorting claims faster. The Nextbase 522GW is packed with features that drivers will really appreciate. It records in crisp 1440p at 30fps (or 1080p at 60fps), giving clear, detailed footage thanks to its sharp lens and 140-degree wide viewing angle. The 3-inch HD IPS touchscreen makes playback easy if you need to access footage quickly. That said, it's Bluetooth-ready, with Quick-Link Wi-Fi, so it's easy enough to sync footage directly to your phone, ideal if you ever need to send clips to your insurer in a hurry. GPS tracking and a G-sensor protect your footage if there's an impact, and the emergency SOS feature can even alert emergency services to your location. There's Alexa built in, too, so you can get directions, play music or check the weather without taking your hands off the wheel. I also spotted more refurbished bargains this week, including a refurbished iPhone 13 deal going for just £20 a month. Which is well worth a look if you're after a budget-friendly upgrade. And if you're gearing up for a trip, reliable tech can make all the difference. Head to our roundup of the best power banks on the market to keep your devices charged on the go.

Jeep Avenger Driving, Engines & Performance

Despite the emphasis on off-road competence, the Avenger handles pretty neatly on the road. Jeep lengthened the suspension travel versus an ordinary hatch, but there's plenty of damping control. There's not much roll, so you can lob it at a corner with surprising abandon and it stays neutral enough. The ride remains on the acceptable side of supple. There's a fair bit of lateral head-toss on straight bumpy roads, but the Avenger is very nicely secured against pitch and float. We suspect the 16in alloys that are standard on the base Avenger are best, though we've yet to try them ourselves. The 18s that come with the top spec car are easily unsettled on rougher surfaces. Advertisement - Page continues below Most importantly of all, it's quiet. We've got used to a clonky suspension from cars on this platform, but not here. The Avenger's tyres roll quietly as well, and the body feels rigid, so the experience is reassuringly refined and calm. Remind me of my powertrain options... Right, deep breath. Your entry level option is the pure petrol. It gets a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine outputting 99bhp. Zero to 62mph takes 10.6s on to a top speed of 114mph. We've tried it – briefly – but found we missed the smoothness that electrical assistance – or full electric power – offers. Which is where the mild hybrid enters the fray. It adds a 28bhp gearbox integrated motor and a 0.9kWh battery, allowing for a small amount of electric only running at low speeds and offering extra torque at low revs (0-62mph takes 10.4s) as well as improved efficiency. No plugging in necessary here either, of course. That's followed by the 4xe which adds another 28bhp e-motor onto the rear axle for all-wheel drive and a total power output of 143bhp. That makes for a 0-62mph sprint time of 9.5s, on to a top speed of 121mph. But outright straight-line speed very much isn't the aim here. No, this is the one for the mud pluggers amongst you. Advertisement - Page continues below In addition to the improved performance on paper, it gets proper rufty-tufty looks and ability thanks to extra protective cladding, increased approach and departure angles (22 and 35 degrees respectively), 400mm wading capability, 10mm extra ground clearance, and proper multi-link rear suspension. Though... in everyday use there's seemingly little advantage to it over the lesser versions. It doesn't feel any quicker and the 1.2-litre hybrid setup remains quite brash, with power only permanently sent to all four wheels up to 19mph, where the extra torque is most welcome. Otherwise, the rear motor works only when called upon up to 56mph, and never above that. And economy suffers as a result, too. So this is really best suited to those planning heading off the beaten track. Fair enough, that's what its maker intended. Like the standard Avenger it also gets Jeep's 'Selec-Terrain' tech that adds hill descent control plus settings for driving on 'Sand', 'Mud' and 'Snow'. We'd wager 90 per cent of Avengers won't ever use them. Isn't there an electric option too? Yup. It mates a 154bhp motor with 51kWh battery, for a claimed 249 miles of range. The kerbweight is a light (for an EV) 1,536kg, so acceleration when you ask is lively-ish. Not that you'd tell from the 9.6-second 0-62mph time. But it gets itself to motorway pace without much trouble, aided by the smallness of its frontal area. Again, there are modes: Sport is the full 154bhp and 192lb ft. 'Normal' shaves that back to 107bhp and 162lb ft, while in 'Eco' you're contenting yourself with 80bhp and 132lb ft, unless you mash the throttle past its far-end kick-point. What that means is the Avenger feels and acts very differently in the various modes compared to its ICE counterparts, which recalibrate the ESP, accelerator and steering weight. You'll probably use 'Normal' mode in suburban driving, as it makes gentle starts easier than in 'Sport': you'll save the latter for faster country roads to make up for the lack of steering or brake feel. The slowing down department is equally well developed: regen power at peak is up to 62bhp from lifting off in B mode, and more when you press the brake. Thereafter, the discs arrive progressively. What about efficiency? Honestly, it's pretty decent. Way better than the Avenger's boxy shape would suggest. We saw 4.1mi/kWh from the trip computer, implying real world range of well over 200 miles against the official claim of 249. Admittedly the Avenger had the weather and the route going for it here: add some cold motorway running into the mix and that number would obviously come down. Oh, and quick word on charge times: if you have a three-phase connection (most don't), the AC inlet will take 11kW, charging it from flat to full in five and a half hours. With a more normal 7kW single-phase home wallbox, it's eight hours. Stopping at a public charger will no doubt cost a lot more, but that's the price you pay for speed. On 100kW DC you ought to get 10-80 per cent in under a half-hour, Jeep claims. That's thanks to the relatively small battery and efficient motor. If range anxiety is a concern for you… maybe you should ask yourself how often you really drive over 200 miles in one go. But we won't go into all that now. Of the other powertrains, the base petrol claims 49mpg and 130g/km CO2 emissions, the mild hybrid 56mpg and 114g/km, and the 4xe 53mpg (we saw 50mpg over 300ish miles) and 125g/km.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Announces 18 New Models By The End Of 2027

Mercedes Has Big Plans To Overcome Rivals In recent times, BMW has been enjoying remarkable sales success, but its compatriot rivals are not performing as well. In fact, BMW has sold twice as many cars as Audi did in the first six months of 2025, and while Mercedes has reported better figures, it's still only sold 142,000 vehicles in Q1 2025 compared to BMW's 178,499. In an attempt to close the gap to BMW over the next few years, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius says the period from this year through 2027 will have 'probably the most intense amount of launches in a three-year period in the history of our company,' reports Top Gear, with no fewer than 18 new models planned. 18 New Vehicles, But Not As Many New Nameplates Source: SH Proshots/Autoblog Mercedes is considering the launch of a gas-powered vehicle as a separate thing from the launch of an EV with the same name, so the CLA EV counts as one launch and the hybrid CLA as another. Similarly, the upcoming combustion-powered CLA Shooting Brake is a new launch separate from the EV that has already been released. Mercedes reportedly intends to add one more 'entry-level' combustion car in 2026, alongside two electric cars. One tier above these cars are the 'core' Merc models, which will welcome two combustion vehicles and two EVs next year. One of these will be the new all-electric GLC that was recently teased and will be revealed at the Munich auto show (IAA) in September. As TG notes, the current C-Class was launched around the same time as the GLC, in 2021, so it's likely that a facelift of the sedan will be unveiled before long. Major Changes Coming To The Top Tier Of Mercedes Models Source: Mercedes-Benz 'Most of the customers at the top end today still choose the Swiss watch of cars with a combustion engine, but it's not going to stop our push to electrification,' Källenius said. 'By the end of this decade, for all relevant Mercedes-Benz models, there will be the choice of an electric powertrain for customers.' This mirrors earlier comments from the company that revealed the EQS would disappear to be reborn simply as an S-Class EV with similar styling to the traditional model. As we've noted before, BMW's decision to make EVs like the i4, i5, and i7 look nearly identical to their combustion-powered 4 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series siblings appears to be paying dividends. At the same time, Mercedes will continue developing internal combustion powertrains. 'Five years ago, we would have been estimating that we would be further along in the journey to electrification by now,' the CEO said. 'We will have both ICE and EV for minimum the next 10 years. You cannot let your high-tech combustion engine side sit still.' Expect new AMG models soon, a new baby G-Class, and the production version of the GTXX concept, which will also spawn an SUV. In summary, to satisfy both sorts of buyers, Mercedes plans six new combustion cars and six new EVs in the 'top end' bracket, two new ICE models and one EV in the 'core' lineup, and one new combustion car in the 'entry level' segment.
