Mexican state accuses Adidas of cultural appropriation over new shoe, threatens legal action
Follow
The Mexican state of Oaxaca is threatening legal action against Adidas, accusing the footwear company of cultural appropriation over a newly unveiled shoe that resembles a traditional handmade sandal.
The 'Oaxaca Slip-On,' billed as a collaboration between American designer Willy Chavarria and Adidas Originals, features a woven leather surface, open heel, and thick rubber sole – and, in the eyes of the Oaxaca government, bears more than a passing resemblance to the 'huarache' handmade sandal from the Oaxacan community of Villa Hidalgo Yalalag.
Oaxacan Governor Salomón Jara Cruz on Wednesday accused the company of copying the Yalalag design without asking permission or crediting the community. He also demanded that Adidas withdraw the shoe, engage in talks with the Indigenous community and publicly recognize the Yalalag as the originators of the design.
'This is not just a design, it is about the culture, history and identity of an original (people) and we will not allow it to be treated as merchandise,' he said in a video posted on X.
He pledged 'legal support' for Villa Hidalgo Yalalag, and said he had already spoken with members of the community about taking action against the footwear company.
Adidas did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment. Neither has it issued a public statement addressing the controversy.
One option for the Oaxacan government would be to file a formal complaint with the Instituto Mexicano de la Propiedad Industrial (IMPI), Mexico's federal agency for intellectual property protection.
Were the IMPI to rule in favor of Oaxaca, it could potentially block Adidas from selling the shoe in Mexico.
The shoe has not yet been released for sale to the public, but images of it have circulated widely online.
Chavarría is known for incorporating Mexican-American identity into his fashion work. CNN has reached out to him for comment.
The dispute adds to a growing number of cases in Mexico where Indigenous communities have accused international designers and brands of replicating their work without permission.
In recent years, companies like Zara, Anthropologie and Patowl have faced similar backlashes over designs or motifs perceived as too similar to traditional works.
In response, Mexico has passed legislation punishing unauthorized use of Indigenous cultural expressions with hefty fines and prison sentences.

Carney to visit Mexico next month as both countries navigate tense U.S. relations
Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to visit Mexico next month as the countries try to navigate trade relations with the United States. Both Mexico and Canada have been subject to tariffs and tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump since he was re-elected last fall. Trump upped tariffs on Canadian non-CUSMA-compliant goods to 35 per cent earlier this month, but exempted Mexico for now — prompting questions about the different approach to the two countries. Canada attempted to reach some sort of agreement on tariffs by Aug. 1. But Dominic LeBlanc, the minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade, said a viable deal wasn't on table by that deadline. Trump gave Mexico a 90-day extension of its current tariff regime with the goal of signing a new deal during that period. Carney's visit to Mexico is scheduled to take place on Sept. 18. The trip was first reported by Bloomberg News. Since his election, Carney has said he wants to expand relations with other countries to avoid being reliant on the U.S. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said they were "kickstarting" a bilateral economic relationship with Mexico during a visit to the country's capital last week. WATCH | What Canadian goods are covered by 35% U.S. tariffs?: While Canada and Mexico are partners in the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), they haven't collaborated together as much as with their shared neighbour. And the two countries haven't always been in harmony during previous trade negotiations, at times prioritizing their relationship with the U.S. "With Mexico, we are neighbours but we could get to know each other better," Champagne told reporters during last week's visit. Anand said the two countries were also looking into "port-to-port lines of trade." On Thursday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Carney and his government for not landing a deal with either the U.S. or Mexico, saying the prime minister has shown "weakness" on the international stage. "Mark Carney promised that he was an international man of mystery who was going to negotiate deals and end tariffs. Well, what's the result been so far?" Poilievre said during a news conference. The Conservative leader also pointed to China slapping tariffs on Canadian canola as another example of the Liberals floundering when it comes to trade. "Countries smell weakness. Mark Carney has been failing," he said. CUSMA review on the horizon Carney's visit also comes as a CUSMA review is rapidly approaching. The trade deal — which was signed in 2018 and came into effect in 2020 — is up for review next year. While CUSMA-compliant goods are exempt from Trump's 35 per cent tariffs, the U.S. president has hit certain Canadian goods — such as softwood lumber, steel, aluminum and some auto parts — with further import levies, whether they fall under the trade agreement's umbrella or not. Although the review isn't scheduled until July 2026, there have been questions about the possibility of it starting early. WATCH | What could come from the trade talks? Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned last week that Trump could choose to suddenly "pull the carpet out from underneath us" by opening up CUSMA as early as this fall. "Let's be prepared. I think it'll be coming in November. He's going to come at us with double barrels, so we better be ready and throw everything and the kitchen sink at this," Ford told reporters last week. LeBlanc has tried to temper concerns that the unpredictable president would trigger an early review. The minister said earlier this spring that he has "no reason to think" Trump would push up the timeline.

Liverpool break SEVEN year record to announce new signing
Liverpool have created a lot of history on the pitch over the last decade under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, but there are still new milestones being reached year after year off the pitch. This summer specifically, the transfer market spending has been extraordinary. Previously, the Reds hadn't ever spent more than £200m in a window, now we're at £300m and looking at spending more. Furthermore, the sales has been just as mind-boggling, helping to reduce Liverpool's net spend to below £100m now, which is astonishing when you consider the standard of each of our new signings. 🔴 In Giovanni Leoni, a young 18-year-old Italian defender, the Reds have their own little piece of history. Leoni announcement breaks new ground Just through signing Leoni, the club created history as he was the first centre-back to join since Ibrahima Konate in 2021 - the fans' four-year wait for a new partner for Virgil Van Dijk finally ended. He's incredibly talented and his £30m price tag should tell you everything you need to know about what the recruitment department think of him. The club's approach is mostly data-based nowadays. At 6ft. 4in, he's a towering figure to have in the team and his six-year contract suggests that he will have a huge role to play over the next few years, especially since he's not going straight out on loan. But on Friday evening, just a few hours prior to Liverpool's first Premier League game of the season, the club announced his signing to confirm everything and he went on to create even more history. Player transfer announcement's at Anfield rarely happen. The last time was Virgil Van Dijk in 2018 when the Reds played Leicester City and the Dutchman wore an all-black suit for the occasion. As such, Leoni's appearance at Anfield on Friday for the Bournemouth game broke that seven-year record, and it gave the young Italian a chance to see up close just how Arne Slot's team operates. He will add important depth to the squad when he joins training next week and hopefully, he'll get his first taste of playing in front of the fans in a few games time when he's up to speed with the players. **🔴 **Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🔴

CAVA vs. Chipotle (CMG): What's the Better Buy?
A notable restaurant duo, Chipotle Mexican Grill CMG and CAVA Group CAVA, both faced pressure following the release of their quarterly results, adding fuel to the already-poor share performance from each in 2025. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research With both stocks coming well off all-time highs, it raises a valid question – what's the better pick moving forward? Let's take a closer look. CAVA Faces Downward Revisions CAVA posted mixed results relative to our consensus estimates, exceeding the Zacks Consensus EPS estimate by 23% but falling short of sales expectation by nearly 3%. Sales were up 20% YoY, whereas earnings were down 15% from the year-ago period. While the sales growth is undoubtedly strong, it was primarily driven by the opening of new locations, with CAVA opening 16 new restaurants throughout the period. But what investors didn't like was comparable restaurant sales growth of 2.1%, a far cry from the 10.8% mark in the prior quarter. CAVA's restaurant operating margin also totaled 26.3%, down from the 26.5% mark a year-ago. Further, comparable restaurant sales growth of 2.1% primarily came from higher menu prices, with guess traffic being roughly flat. CAVA trimmed guidance across several metrics, most notably comparable restaurant sales growth, now expecting growth in a band of 4 – 6% compared to 6 – 8% prior for its FY25. The slowing growth in its existing locations paired with decreased traffic helps explain the poor share reaction post-earnings, with analysts also recalculating their EPS and sales expectations following the print and downwardly revised guidance. The stock is currently a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Image Source: Zacks Investment Research CMG Trims Guidance CMG's results were similarly mixed concerning our consensus expectations, with the company posting a 3% EPS beat while falling short of sales expectations by roughly 1.2%. Sales were up 3% year-over-year, whereas earnings fell 3% from the year-ago period. Notably, comparable restaurant sales fell 4% year-over-year. The company also trimmed its FY25 comparable restaurant sales growth guidance to flat year-over-year, which compares to a previously anticipated low-single-digit range. Like CAVA, the company's existing restaurants also faced a profitability crunch, with its restaurant level operating margin contracting to 27.4% vs. 28.9% in the year-ago period. Analysts haven't had the same bearish reaction post-earnings concerning their revisions, with expectations for CMG largely remaining stable post-earnings and even increasing for its next release. CMG is currently a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Image Source: Zacks Investment Research What's The Better Buy? While Chipotle Mexican Grill CMG and CAVA Group CAVA both reflect intriguing options for restaurant exposure, the reality remains that they've faced considerable share pressure from weak quarterly results that have revealed slowing growth. Concerning the valuation picture, CAVA's trading at a premium to CMG, with CMG's restaurant margins just as strong (and with a history of consistency) while its EPS outlook also remains much more constructive. The Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) rating on CAVA reflects a tough near-term outlook concerning share performance, whereas a largely-stable EPS picture for CMG keeps it a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
