Theatres
were suffering huge losses and most movies, especially the mid-budget ones were not seeing any box office returns. Which explains why there were also many re-releases. But the month of April has been hugely satisfying for the box office as cinegoers flocked to theatres and three movies which releases back-to-back have proven to be successful. 'Jaat' released on April 10, post which we saw 'Kesari 2' releasing on April 18. Both these movies dominated at the box office in April. On May 1,
Ajay Devgn
's 'Raid 2' released which did even better than these two, thus, from April 10 to May 10, it's been quite a fruitful month for theatres, providing huge hope for times to come. Here's what trade experts say!
Huge boost to cinema halls
According to Sacnilk, the total collection of
Sunny Deol
's 'Jaat' so far is Rs 87.31 crore.
Akshay Kumar
's 'Kesari 2' has made about Rs 87.31 crore. Meanwhile, Ajay Devgn's 'Raid 2' has made Rs 124.33 crore just within a span of 12 days. Thus, the cumulative total of all the three movies is Rs 299.14 crore in India. These are just the domestic box office numbers. The worldwide collection of all these three movies is even higher. This is huge as in the past we've seen hardly 1 or 2 movies working in the span of 3-4 months. But all these three movies coming within a month are successful.
Trade expert Taran Adarsh says, "'Jatt' worked mass pockets, single screens and then there was 'Kesari 2' which worked well in urban centres, multiplexes specifically, and 'Raid 2' worked across both. We were encountering those bad days in the recent past, where things are not working, scarcity of releases and a lot of things, a lot of factors and within a month these three came - all three worked at the box office. All three are theatrical success. Mind you, I'm using the term theatrical successes. That is a very important term, because people need to come to theatres. Aapne OTT pe dekhli, woh alag baat hai. But for people to come to theatres and watch the film, that's very important."
Film business expert Girish Wankhede elaborates, "The momentum kicked off on April 10 with the release of Jaat starring the iconic Sunny Deol. The film opened to a strong reception, quickly establishing itself as a box office hit. Deol's enduring popularity but also the audience's appetite for compelling storytelling. The film's success set a positive tone for the following weeks, signaling a potential revival for the industry. Then there was Akshay Kumar's 'Kesari 2'. Although it started with a slower pace, the film gradually gained traction and filled theaters, ultimately garnering around ₹88 crores after 25 days. The critical acclaim it received contributed to its steady performance, showcasing Kumar's ability to draw audiences and maintain his status as a leading figure in Bollywood."

He added, "The excitement continued with Ajay Devgn's anticipated release Raid 2 on May 1. The film opened to satisfactory numbers and has already crossed the ₹125 crore mark. Devgn, known for his versatility and strong screen presence, has once again proven that he is a force to be reckoned with in the film industry. His ability to connect with audiences through diverse roles has kept him relevant and in demand, making his latest project another success story."
The comeback of mid-budget movies, with big stars
After Covid, one had seen that only big budget movies were working in cinemas. But that seems to have changed now and there is more hope. Exhibitor-Distributor Akshaye Rathi says, "Movies are finally beginning to get the business back in uh cinemas are finally mojo all over again this is a time when i really hope that uh you know the one thing that we were missing over the last couple of years post the pandemic which is the success of mid-segment films right we had the big ticket tentpole blockbusters doing certain numbers uh but the smaller ones were not taking on too well and now with movies like Raid 2 or Kesari 2 but they aren't RRR and KGF in terms of the mega budgets involved in the scale and to see these sort of mid-segment films and when I say mid-segment, I mean it in terms of the budget."
He added, "It's a very encouraging sign for the whole industry because it's only these kind of films that can be made with a great frequency. These were reasonably budgeted films and the only spending on them was the talent cost largely. So, theatrical box office along with the streaming and satellite rights, music rights, all three have been profitable."
Wankhede added, "In a time when many in the industry have struggled to find footing, the success of these films serves as a saving grace for the Indian box office. It underscores the enduring appeal of established stars like Sunny Deol, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgn, who continue to attract audiences and deliver box office results. Their ability to draw viewers back to theaters is crucial for the recovery of the cinema industry, which has been VB grappling with the aftereffects of the pandemic and the rise of digital content consumption."
Exciting times ahead, June looks promising
There are many interesting films lined up for release in the coming days. Adarsh says, "Now the advance bookings for for Mission Impossible, the Tom Cruise film that's releasing on Saturday, not Friday, mind you, it's releasing on Saturday, it's fantastic. So, there's a lot of positivity as far as theatrical business is concerned and hope this momentum continues. I have hopes for two other films in June - one is 'Sitaare Zameen Par' and the other one is 'Housefull 5'."
Wankhede further said, "In conclusion, the strong performance of these films over the past two months indicates a positive shift in the Indian box office landscape. It highlights the importance of star power, engaging narratives, and the collective enthusiasm of audiences eager to experience the magic of cinema on the big screen. As the industry navigates its way through these transformative times, the success of these films offers hope and a renewed sense of optimism for the future of Bollywood."

Aamir Khan was once slated to star in this Shah Rukh Khan blockbuster. 31 years later, actor says, ‘I didn't say no…'

The 1993 psychological thriller Darr, directed by the legendary Yash Chopra , was a landmark film that shaped the trajectory of Shah Rukh Khan 's stardom. In the film, Shah Rukh portrayed a deeply disturbed stalker fixated on a woman named Kiran, portrayed by Juhi Chawla. His character, Rahul, was dangerously obsessed, willing to harm anyone who stood between him and the woman he desired. Sunny Deol played the conventional protagonist—a protective fiancé fighting for his love. However, before Shah Rukh was cast as the obsessive antagonist, the role had initially been offered to Aamir Khan . During a recent conversation with Zoom, Aamir revealed that, contrary to popular belief, he hadn't rejected Darr. Instead, he was dismissed from the project. He explained that he had agreed to do the film, but his insistence on a joint script narration with both lead actors led to his removal. Aamir revealed he firmly believes that when a film features more than one central character, all key actors should be present for a collaborative narration. This approach, according to him, ensures mutual understanding and cohesive teamwork. However, Yash Chopra wasn't willing to accommodate that request, leading to Aamir being let go from the film. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo Aamir further cited his experience with Andaz Apna Apna to support his stance. While working on that film alongside Salman Khan, Aamir insisted that both of them attend the story session together. Salman reportedly skipped the meeting multiple times, but Aamir stood his ground, refusing to proceed until both actors were present. Eventually, the narration took place jointly, adhering to Aamir's condition. After Darr was released, the film garnered significant success and became the third highest-grossing film of the year. Shah Rukh Khan's chilling portrayal of Rahul won critical acclaim and immense popularity, catapulting him into a league of unconventional anti-heroes. However, behind the film's commercial triumph, there was brewing tension on set. Sunny Deol was dissatisfied with how his character was portrayed, feeling that the narrative and screen space favored Shah Rukh's role over his own. This perceived imbalance led to long-standing friction between Sunny and Shah Rukh. Their rift lasted for years, marked by cold shoulders and avoidance in public appearances. However, the bitterness was finally put to rest in 2023 when Shah Rukh attended the success celebration of Gadar 2, a significant gesture that brought closure to their decades-old feud. Darr remains memorable not just for its gripping storyline and performances but also for the behind-the-scenes drama that shaped its casting and legacy.

David Walliams faces backlash for offensive Nazi salute on BBC's Would I Lie To You?

David Walliams reportedly made two Nazi salutes during the recording of the BBC comedy panel show Would I Lie To You? this week, leading to the segment being cut and drawing condemnation from the BBC as well as the show's production company. The incident occurred during a segment featuring Helen George, who was sharing a story about injuring her wrist while waving. Walliams joined in with increasingly exaggerated waves that culminated in the offensive gesture. The Nazi salute incident took place at Pinewood Studios on Tuesday (June 10) during the recording of the Christmas special, was witnessed by audience members. The BBC and Banijay UK, the production company, have issued an apology while condemning Walliams. The BBC described David Walliams's actions as "unacceptable" and added the segment would not be on air. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Are Watching Tariffs - Few Are Watching What Nvidia Just Launched Seeking Alpha Read Now Undo The offensive Nazi salute The comedian and children's author made the gestures during a segment in which a fellow panellist discussed a story about injuring their wrist while waving. Walliams reportedly joined in with increasingly vigorous waves, which culminated in him holding out his arm in a Nazi salute. The former Britain's Got Talent judge was on the panel for the BBC One show's Christmas special, which was recorded at Pinewood Studios on Tuesday. Live Events Journalist Sebastian Topan, who was in the audience, contacted the BBC to describe what happened. One part of the show saw Call The Midwife actress Helen George, who took part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2015, being given a prompt to suggest she had sprained her wrist "from waving too much during the Strictly tour". She then had to try to convince the opposing team that her anecdote was true. After demonstrating the wave, which purportedly left her with an injury, she was told that it was "too little" and was encouraged to make a bigger gesture. "Some other panellist was talking when David Walliams started doing the Nazi salute," Topan told the BBC. "I was shocked at what I had seen." According to Topan, there were "patches of quietened gasps and awkward half-laughs and broken clapping" in the audience. The show's host, Gavin & Stacey star Rob Brydon, then told Walliams the show would be broadcast before the 9pm watershed, effectively suggesting his behaviour was not suitable for a family TV audience. As the discussion about George's experience continued, Walliams made the gesture again, adding a sexual gesture with his other hand. The exchange reportedly landed awkwardly in the studio. "The atmosphere was uncomfortable and weird," Topan said. "I think Rob Brydon wanted to get past it as quickly as he could. David Walliams' team-mates looked unsure what to do and were not laughing... It was like an elephant in the room after that as the incident was early on in the recording and so the remainder of the show felt weird." Another audience member posted on X after the recording: "I didn't have David Walliams doing a Nazi salute at the Would I Lie To You? Christmas taping on my 2025 bingo card." Banijay UK, which owns the show's production company Zeppotron, issued a statement regarding the incident. "Any attempt at humour regarding this deeply offensive gesture, whether broadcast or not, is completely unacceptable in any context." "It was immediately acknowledged during the recording that this segment would not be broadcast under any circumstances and we apologise to those who were at the recording for any offence caused.'
