Kaizer Chiefs inspired by unveiling of CAF Champions League trophy
As Kaizer Chiefs return to continental interclub competition, the timing of the new CAF Champions League trophy reveal couldn't had been more poignant.
The Glamour Boys, fresh from their Nedbank Cup triumph that guaranteed them a place to compete on the continent, taking on the challenges of the CAF Confederation Cup, the unveiling of the prestigious trophy in Johannesburg will undoubtedly serve as a powerful motivator for the team.
Although Amakhosi won't be competing in the CAF Champions League, the club's return to continental competition via the CAF Confederation Cup has generated significant buzz over the past few weeks.
Having come close to lifting the CAF Champions League trophy in the 2021 final against Al Ahly, the new design serves as an added incentive for the team.
'The CAF Interclub Trophy Reveal is more than just a ceremony; it's a platform that brings together the best of African club football,' said Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung.
'By celebrating our clubs' achievements, we're promoting a culture of excellence and competitiveness that will drive African football forward.'
Motaung reflected on the remarkable growth and progress African football has made over the years, citing the passion and dedication of fans as a key driver.
'Our fans are some of the most loyal and enthusiastic in the world,' she said.
'Their love for the sport is unmatched, and their energy and creativity bring African football to life.'
Speaking as the Africa Club Association deputy chairperson, Motaung said that the relationship between CAF and the ACA is an important conduit to ensure that clubs become a key stakeholders in maintaining a steady upward trajectory for the sustainability of club football in a commercial environment.
'It's a vital role for both organisations to promote the interests of African clubs and driving the development of club football on the continent,' she said, adding, 'We are committed to ensuring that both organisation provide a platform for clubs to share best practices, address common challenges, and collaborate on initiatives that drive growth and innovation.'
The new trophy will make its debut when Mamelodi Sundowns take on Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League final.
CAF's Head of TV and Communications, Luxolo September, revealed that 30% of the design pays homage to the previous trophy, while 70% is a bold new innovation.
'To be the best in the world you have to reinvent and I think the new trophy is a clear symbol of this, a symbol of CAF keeping to tradition but reinventing itself and modernising the trophy,' September commented.
He concluded, 'It was important that we made the product look better, appealing and easy on the eye so today was a bold step towards this.'

Sundowns' Cardoso reacts to defeat and Zwane non-selection
'This group has a lot of quality players and obviously Themba is one of them,' said Cardoso. Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso issued a candid assessment following their 2-1 defeat to Pyramids FC in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final which took place at the 30 June Stadium on Sunday night. Pyramids edged the overall tie 3-2 on aggregate after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg. The Egyptian club made history by claiming their first continental championship. Cardoso insisted that the Cairo-based outfit displayed greater desire to lift the trophy. ALSO READ: Pyramids FC edge Sundowns to win Champions League 'When I say that it's important to compete at the highest level, that is exactly the answer that I've given so many times this season when playing Champions League,' said a crestfallen Cardoso. 'Why is it so difficult to beat teams from the north of Africa? It's because those teams can play football but they also play at a high level. Every duel is a life changer and every ball they fight for, they fight with all the energy they have. 'In some moments, I felt like those were things that were missing from our part. I don't think that we were worse when playing football against Pyramids. 'It was shown in both matches but Pyramids were competent and capable in both matches to position themselves in a way that prevented us from playing the way we wanted. But most of all, they gave their lives for every ball they played for and that's what makes a difference in the final sometimes.' One of the night's biggest talking points was Cardoso's decision to leave veteran midfielder Themba Zwane on the bench. Zwane, a crucial figure in Sundowns' 2016 title-winning campaign, was an unused substitute, a move the Portuguese tactician chose not to justify. 'I totally understand what kind of an answer you want and you are looking for but it's not time to speak about individual performance of players. 'It's not a matter of accepting that we lost but it's a matter of accepting that we didn't play a game at a level that we should have played in the first three parts of the game. Enter Pyramids striker Fiston Mayele. The 30-year-old Congolese forward struck in the 23rd minute at 30 June Stadium, which effectively put the contest out of reach for the Betway Premiership champions. Though the aggregate at that stage was 2-1 to Pyramids, it meant Sundowns had to score twice to come away victorious. As Pyramids doubled their lead in the second half with Ahmed Samy, it didn't actually change anything as two goals would still be needed for the SA outfit. Iqraam Rayners did pull a goal back with a quarter of an hour remaining, but there would be no further change to the scoreline as Pyramids ran out victors.
