Egyptian Pound undervalued: Economist's Big Mac Index 2025
The Egyptian pound remains significantly undervalued, according to the Economist's July 2025 Big Mac Index, as measured by both the Raw Index and the GDP-adjusted version. The index shows that buying a Big Mac in Egypt costs less than half what it does in the United States—suggesting the pound is far weaker than its 'fair value' relative to the US dollar. According to the Raw Index, a Big Mac costs EGP 125.00 in Egypt, compared to $6.01 in the US. This implies an exchange rate of EGP 20.80 to the dollar. Given the actual market exchange rate of EGP 49.35, the pound is deemed 57.9 percent undervalued. To address criticism that goods are naturally cheaper in poorer countries due to lower labour costs, The Economist also publishes a GDP-adjusted index for a more nuanced view. Under the GDP-adjusted index, a Big Mac costs $2.53 in Egypt, compared to $6.01 in the US—a 57.9 percent difference. However, when accounting for Egypt's GDP per capita, a Big Mac should cost just 28.8 percent less. This suggests that the pound is still undervalued by approximately 40.8 percent. The report comes amid a slight appreciation of the Egyptian pound over the past six months. The dollar has declined by 2.42 percent against the pound, with the current exchange rate at EGP 49.07. Rising remittances from Egyptians abroad are among the factors contributing to this trend. First introduced in 1986, the Big Mac Index was designed as a lighthearted way to illustrate purchasing-power parity (PPP)—the theory that exchange rates should eventually equalize the price of identical goods across countries. Although never intended as a precise economic tool, the index has become widely cited in textbooks and academic studies, providing an accessible snapshot of currency valuation. For those who take their fast food more seriously, The Economist also publishes a 'gourmet' version of the index. In Egypt, the McDonald's franchise is owned and operated by Manfoods, a subsidiary of the Mansour Group. The chain has been operating in the country for 28 years, with more than 131 branches across 14 governorates—mainly in Cairo and Giza—with total investments exceeding EGP 1 billion. Egypt will always remain fortified by its national unity: El-Sisi marking 23 July Revolution anniversary
President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed on Wednesday that Egypt 'will always remain fortified by its cohesive internal front—impervious to conspiracies and strife, and fully aware of what is being plotted around it.' The remarks came during a televised address marking the 73rd anniversary of the 23 July 1952 Revolution. 'I am firmly convinced that this nation is capable of overcoming challenges and surpassing hardships, no matter how varied or widespread they may be,' El-Sisi said. The president paid tribute to the historical significance of the 1952 Revolution, describing it as a defining moment in the country's modern history. 'On this day, seventy-three years ago, the Egyptian people wrote a shining page in their history, when the spark of the July 1952 Revolution ignited—marking a turning point in the nation's path,' he said. 'It ended a hated era of occupation, established the values of dignity, honour, and independence, and lit the torch of liberation across the Arab region and the Third World.' He described the revolution as 'an inspiration for freedom from colonialism and for national independence.' Reflecting on the lessons of history, El-Sisi said the state continues to draw from the revolution's legacy. 'This republic, built in 2014, stands on solid foundations, guided by an ambitious vision and steady steps toward a modern state that embraces scientific methods to fulfill its aspirations and trusts in God's help to achieve its goals,' he said. El-Sisi pointed to Egypt's resilience amid global upheaval, noting that the country has made 'great accomplishments at a time when other nations have collapsed, entities fragmented, and crises intensified.' 'Yet Egypt remained a land of safety and stability—a secure refuge for humanity,' he added. The president highlighted Egypt's role as a sanctuary during turbulent times. 'Nearly 10 million people from various countries have sought refuge here. Egypt has offered the world a unique model of humanity and responsibility. Despite ongoing pressures, it has never abandoned its national or humanitarian obligations.' The nation's development Turning to domestic progress, El-Sisi stressed Egypt's commitment to development in the face of adversity. 'We preserved the nation's stability and chose the path of construction through a powerful national effort, with determination and hands that do not break,' he said. He highlighted major achievements in recent years, particularly in defence, infrastructure, and social protection. 'Our valiant army has developed into an impenetrable shield and a sharp sword. We defeated terrorism, and the land of Egypt was cleansed of its evils,' El-Sisi declared. He also noted the country's sweeping urban transformation, which included the removal of slums, construction of new housing, and the establishment of smart cities. A flagship initiative in this effort, he said, is Haya Karima (Decent Life), which now benefits nearly 60 million citizens. 'I affirm here,' he continued, 'that Egypt—refusing to let its people live in slums or unsafe areas—will not leave any deserving citizen uncertain about their future or housing.' In conclusion, President El-Sisi expressed his gratitude to the revolutionaries of July 1952, as well as to the Armed Forces, police, and all Egyptians working to build and protect the nation. Egypt Declares Thursday Paid Public Holiday to Mark July 23 Revolution Anniv.
Ahmed Emam The Egyptian government announced that Thursday, July 24, 2025, will be a paid public holiday, in lieu of Wednesday, July 23, to mark the anniversary of the 1952 July 23 Revolution. The move aligns with a Cabinet decision to shift official holidays to the end of the week to provide extended breaks for workers. According to the Prime Minister's Decree No. 2474 of 2025, the holiday will be granted to employees across ministries, public authorities, state administrative bodies, public sector companies, and public business sector enterprises. The private sector will also observe the holiday under the provisions of Egyptian Labor Law No. 12 of 2003. The Ministry of Labor issued Circular No. 15 of 2025, clarifying that private sector workers covered by the labor law are entitled to a fully paid day off on Thursday, July 24. The decision is made in accordance with Article 52 of the labor law, which grants employees paid leave on official public holidays as determined by the competent minister. The circular emphasized that employers may require employees to work on the holiday if necessary for business operations. In such cases, workers are entitled to double their standard pay for the day, in addition to their regular wage. The Ministry urged all central administration heads and labor directorates across the country to implement the circular at workplaces and production sites and ensure full compliance with its provisions. The July 23 holiday commemorates the 1952 revolution led by the Free Officers Movement, which ended the monarchy and laid the foundations of modern republican Egypt. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
