'MCA at crossroads – either the party quickly shape up or fade into obvious oblivion'

MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has haughtily dismissed ideas and criticism levelled at his perceived slow, indolent and disconnected leadership with the national pulse and grassroot sentiments by telling outsiders to stay out.
However, for MCA to secure a more meaningful role and be relevant in future political sphere would depend largely on public optics and perception.
Wee must face the reality that MCA's political viability and survival depends largely on how the public – especially the fence-sitters and younger voters – perceive the party's role and relevance to the current political situation and development.
If MCA is seen to be subservient and dependent on UMNO or being defensive on issues and challenges that affect its image and dignity, then outsiders will tend to outcast MCA for good or push the party into further irrelevance.
'Eat humble pie'
MCA's present leadership cannot expect or rely on the party's past achievements or legacies – or the Chinese community's dissatisfaction with PMX (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) or DAP – to regain its lost popularity.
Instead, the present MCA leaders must stand up and rise to the occasion when slapped or stepped on.
MCA must accept that it is no longer the political 'giant' it used to be. The fact is that some political parties in Sabah and Sarawak have even emerged to be stronger and more influential than MCA which used to be the second largest party in the ruling government.
MCA leaders must accept this political reality and be courageous to face the new political landscape and challenges head on.
We cannot be an ostrich hiding our heads in the sand, avoiding the uncomfortably truth that UMNO have shifted its political allegiance to DAP or that DAP is clinging to UMNO to displace and replace MCA for good in the run-up to the 16th General Election (GE16).
The Malaysian public and many MCA members are waiting for party leaders to act, react or posture in the face of the many political 'insults and slaps' on MCA's pride and dignity since DAP 'married into UMNO' – and most recently stepped into 'UMNO's Chambers for a ministerial briefing without MCA and MIC'.
Self-deception
MIC President Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran have spoken and postured with whispers that the party will take a giant step away from UMNO very soon. On the other hand, the silence of Wee who is the MCA skipper is deafening.
By choosing not to act, react or respond to political insults – one after another – and even camouflaging this as being politically strategic is Ah Q and purely a self-consolidation.
You can tell outsiders to stay out in an arrogant or haughty manner but you cannot deny the fact that these so-called outsiders are in fact seeing cowardice in MCA's leadership.
Such perception is not going to do MCA any good or win over the votes of fence sitters. Neither can MCA's awkward silence recover votes of its own member which have been abandoning the party during the past few general elections.
Today's voters are becoming more critical and demanding, especially among the younger generation. MCA must directly – and swiftly – address the political issues faced to win back lost votes and to capture more votes to ensure an election victory
UMNO's disregard and contemptuous acts towards MCA as a component party must be directly and immediately addressed with guts.
Otherwise, the perception that MCA is a stooge and stooped too low vis-a-vis UMNO is going to cost MCA more damage and irrelevance.
Yes, President Wee, MCA will decide its own future but OUTSIDERS will be the judge! – Aug 8, 2025

"Tianjin summit will be a gathering of friendship": China welcomes PM Modi for SCO Summit

New Delhi [India], August 8 (ANI): China has officially extended a welcome to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, which will be held in Tianjin at the end of this month. Addressing a press briefing in Beijing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun made this announcement, expressing optimism that the gathering would strengthen regional cooperation. The Ministry of External Affairs has not yet issued a statement on the Prime Minister's visit. The development comes amid tariffs imposed on India by United States President Donald Trump for buying Russian oil. 'China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit. We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness,' the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated. China will host the SCO Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1 this year and leaders of over 20 countries, including all member states of the SCO, and heads of 10 international organisations will attend relevant events as per the Chinese Ministry spokesperson. Prime Minister Modi last visited China in 2018 on two occasions. First, during the month of April for the India-China Informal Summit at Wuhan, and later in June for the 18th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of SCO in Qingdao. Prime Minister Narendra Modi last met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in October 2024 on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. During their meeting, both leaders welcomed the agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. They agreed that the Special Representatives would meet at an early date to oversee the management of peace and tranquillity in border areas and to explore a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question. This meeting occurred shortly after the disengagement and patrolling agreement, and the resolution of issues that had arisen in the India-China border areas in 2020. It was a highly anticipated meeting between PM Modi and President Xi, as it came at a pivotal moment in India-China relations, during a time when there was a border standoff between India and China that began in eastern Ladakh along the LAC in 2020, sparked by Chinese military actions. PM Modi also assured India's full support to China's 2025 SCO presidency during the meeting. the SCO was established in the year 2001. Apart from India the other countries in the bloc are China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan,Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Iran and Belarus. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers' meeting in Qingdao in China in June this year. Earlier this year, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, along with fellow Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers, called on Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin. During the meeting, Jaishankar apprised Xi of the recent development of bilateral ties and conveyed the greetings of President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Xi. The EAM was on an official visit to China to attend the SCO Foreign Ministers Meeting. (ANI)

Don't internationalise public varsities at cost of local students, says Wee

MCA president Wee Ka Siong told the Dewan Rakyat this week that more students from China are gaining admission into public universities than Malaysians because they can afford it. PETALING JAYA : The 'internationalisation' of public universities must never come at the cost of equal access for local students, MCA president Wee Ka Siong said. This comes after DAP MP Howard Lee urged Wee to apologise for claiming that an influx of students from China was limiting opportunities for local students to enter Malaysian public universities. Lee had accused the Ayer Hitam MP of trying to portray himself as a hero for the Malaysian Chinese community. Responding to Lee's remarks, Wee said the core of the issue was not race, but 'access, equity, fairness and accountability'. 'I have openly expressed my support for internationalisation. It is vital for Malaysia's higher education sector to be globally competitive. 'However, internationalisation must be done with clear policy direction and a principled framework that distinguishes between postgraduate-level international recruitment versus first-degree enrolments. 'Without such clarity, we risk sending mixed signals to our citizens and the international community,' he said. Wee had claimed in the Dewan Rakyat earlier that more students from China were gaining admission into public universities than Malaysians because the Chinese could afford it. He told Lee it was not fair that tax-paying Malaysians whose children aspire to enter public universities now face dwindling opportunities while universities 'expand revenue-generating international intakes through non-transparent mechanisms'. MCA had also recently called for a suspension of Universiti Malaya's MBBS intake for the 2025/2026 session until the higher education ministry reviews its admissions mechanism. A position paper launched by Wee said the apparent selectiveness in UM's student admissions raised questions about meritocracy in the process. The party said the availability of the two parallel channels reinforced inequality as lower-income students could only apply through UPU, while those with funds could afford Saluran Terbuka Universiti Malaya's (Satu) higher open channel fees. 'Is it fair that universities commercialise the open channel intake to fellow Malaysians with extremely high tuition fees – RM400,000 to RM500,000 versus RM15,000 to RM200,000 for a five-year MBBS course? 'When we raise these questions, the right response is not to deny, deflect or demonise, but to reform,' said Wee. Yesterday, higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir denied allegations that an influx of students from China was limiting opportunities for local students to enter public universities. He said the government has never sacrificed local student quotas to make room for international students for the sake of greater profits.
