In Hailakandi, members of Hindu Jagran Manch, ABVP, and other RSS-affiliated organisations held a rally and symbolically burned effigies of Pakistan and the terror groups at the Netaji statue point in the town. Local traders joined the demonstrations, mourning the death of the tourists and condemning the attack.
Swaraswati Vidyanikatan and Sribhumi authorities convened a meeting to condemn the attack, urging the government to take stringent action against the perpetrators. The meeting also paid tribute to the deceased tourists.

Mahbubnagar: Mahbubnagar MLA Yennam Srinivas Reddy paid rich tributes to legendary Bahujan warrior Sardar Sarvai Papanna Goud on his 375th birth anniversary in Mahabubnagar on Monday. Garlanding Papanna's statue in the district, the MLA describied him as a true revolutionary who proved that when the oppressed and Bahujans unite, they can achieve political power. At a program held at Padmavati Colony, Green Belt in Mahbubnagar, the MLA garlanded Papanna's statue and recalled his remarkable contribution to social justice and people's empowerment nearly 350 years ago. Speaking on the occasion, the MLA said that Papanna was the first Bahujan king who, in the 17th century, raised his own army, fought against feudal lords and jagirdars, and established a Bahujan kingdom with Khilashapur as his capital. 'Papanna Goud dreamt of a society without caste, religious, or communal divisions and stood as a symbol of courage and social justice, much before Mahatma Jyotirao Phule,' he said. He narrated how Papanna united Bahujans, Dalits, and minorities, formed a guerrilla army, looted the wealth of landlords, and distributed it among the poor. In 1675, he established his rule with Sarvaipet as the center and expanded his territory by capturing several estates. After Aurangzeb's death, Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah recognized Papanna's authority and even offered him a treaty, making him ruler of Golconda Fort. 'For the first time, the Bahujan flag fluttered atop Golconda Fort,' the MLA added. However, unable to tolerate his rule, landlords and feudal chiefs conspired with the Mughal rulers to dethrone him. Though Papanna fought valiantly, he was severely injured, and his death remains shrouded in legend. 'Yet, he lives forever in the hearts of Telangana's people as a symbol of Bahujan pride and resistance,' said Srinivas Reddy. The MLA announced that the Telangana government, under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and PCC Chief Mahesh Kumar Goud, would officially organize Papanna's birth and death anniversaries. He also revealed plans to install a statue of Papanna at Tank Bund, Hyderabad, and to set up his statues in villages across Telangana so that future generations learn about his history. Highlighting the Congress government's commitment to social justice, he reminded that the Assembly had already passed a resolution providing 42% reservation for Backward Classes, though the BJP-led central government opposed it. 'We fought in Delhi to ensure Bahujan rights, and we will continue the struggle,' he asserted. The event was attended by Minority Finance Corporation Chairman Obaidullah Kotwal, District Collector Vijayendra Boi, TPCC General Secretary Mithun Reddy, District Library Chairman Mallu Narasimha Reddy, Market Committee Chairperson Bekkari Anita Madhusudan Reddy, former Municipal Chairman Anand Goud, and several other leaders and dignitaries.

PM's Diwali Dhamaka may come as GST cuts on small cars, insurance premiums
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Diwali 'dhamaka' for consumers may come in the form of cuts in Goods and Services Tax (GST) on small cars and insurance premiums. According to a report by Reuters, citing government sources, Centre has proposed lowering GST on small petrol and diesel cars to 18 per cent from 28 per cent, and reducing GST on health and life insurance premiums to 5 per cent from the current 18 per cent, or even exempting them entirely. If cleared, the relief package could be unveiled before Diwali in October, India's busiest retail season, and just weeks ahead of the Bihar Assembly election. PM Modi, in his Independence Day address, promised 'next generation' GST reforms to ease the burden on consumers and micro, small and medium enterprises. Larger GST overhaul in the works PM Modi's rationalisation agenda is built on three pillars, the Reuters report said. This includes structural reforms, rate simplification, and ease of living. It seeks to correct inverted duty structures, reduce classification disputes, and eventually move towards a simplified two-slab structure with standard and merit rates while phasing out the 12 per cent slab. Moreover, as the compensation cess on luxury and sin goods is set to end, the Centre sees an opportunity to use that room to cut GST on everyday and aspirational products without hurting revenues. Compensation cess expiry and GST review Compensation cess refers to the extra levy introduced in 2017 on luxury and sin goods such as coal, tobacco, aerated drinks, and large cars. It was designed to compensate states for revenue losses after GST replaced earlier state taxes like VAT and octroi. Originally meant to expire in 2022, the cess was extended until March 2026 to help cover revenue shortfalls caused by the pandemic. Once it lapses, the Centre will have greater flexibility to rationalise GST rates without relying on this additional revenue stream. Small cars to see turnaround Small cars, defined as those under four metres with petrol engines up to 1,200cc and diesel engines up to 1,500cc, have steadily lost ground to SUVs, shrinking from nearly half the passenger vehicle market pre-pandemic to about one-third of the 4.3 million units sold in FY24. A lower tax rate could help revive demand in this category, which remains significant for manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, and Tata Motors. Big cars may get costlier The government is also considering a 40 per cent special GST slab for larger vehicles, which currently attract 28 per cent GST plus a compensation cess of up to 22 per cent, taking the effective burden close to 50 per cent. Officials are weighing whether to impose supplementary levies to keep the final incidence within the existing 43-50 per cent band. Insurance relief on the cards Households may see additional relief through cheaper health and life insurance. Cutting GST to 5 per cent from 18 per cent or zero would help lower premiums and expand coverage in a country. GST Council to meet in September The matter has been referred to the Group of Ministers set up by the GST Council, which is expected to take place on September 9, according to a report by CNBC-TV18. If approved, the package would mark the most significant GST restructuring since 2017.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday said the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is a "new weapon" of "vote chori" and vowed to protect the 'one person, one vote' principle. He made the remarks in a post on his WhatsApp channel while talking about his meeting with a group of people who had cast their vote in the previous Lok Sabha election but their name had been deleted in the SIR exercise in Bihar. Gandhi met the group at the launch of his Vote Adhikar Yatra in Sasaram on Sunday. In his post in Hindi along with a picture of the meeting, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said, "SIR is a new weapon of vote theft. Coincidentally, these people standing with me in this picture are 'living' proof of this theft." "All of them had cast their vote in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections - but by the time Bihar assembly elections came, their identity, their existence was erased from the democracy of India," he said. "Do you know who they are? Raj Mohan Singh (70): Farmer and retired soldier; Umravati Devi (35): Dalit and labourer; Dhanjay Kumar Bind (30): Backward class and labourer; Sita Devi (45): Woman and former MNREGA labourer; Raju Devi (55): Backward class and labourer; Mohmuddin Ansari (52): Minority and labourer," he said. Travelling from Kutumba, the Yatra is expected to reach Gaya this evening. Embarking on a 1,300 km 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' from Sasaram, Gandhi on Sunday had accused the Election Commission of "stealing" elections in collusion with the BJP and asserted that the INDIA bloc will not let their "latest conspiracy" to steal Bihar polls through SIR of electoral rolls succeed. After 16 days, the yatra will conclude with a rally in Patna on September 1. The yatra is being undertaken in a hybrid mode, on foot and by vehicle, as was Gandhi's Manipur to Mumbai Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. It will pass through Aurangabad, Gaya, Nawada, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Munger, Bhagalpur, Katihar, Purnea, Araria, Supaul, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, East Champaran, West Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Chhapra and Ara.
