20-year-old college dropout arrested for spying in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra

Hindustan Times29-05-2025
A 20-year-old college dropout, Abhishek Bhardwaj, was arrested at Sukahar in Dehra sub division of Kangra district on suspicion of spying after sensitive and objectionable content was found on his mobile phone, police said on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off that he had been providing intelligence information to Pakistan, the police had been monitoring Abhishek's activities over the past few days before they arrested him from his house on Wednesday. He was interrogated at the Dehra police station and booked under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for acts endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.
Dehra superintendent of police (SP) Mayank Chaudhary said: 'After we got an input about Abhishek's activities, we kept him under close surveillance. We have found sensitive videos and photos on his mobile phone, which has been seized and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for further analysis.'
A special team was formed under the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Dadaseeba. It had been monitoring the suspect for several days, collecting intelligence and keeping a watch.
This is the first such arrest in Himachal Pradesh as part of a larger crackdown on espionage networks after Operation Sindoor, launched by India on May 7 in response to an April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. Since then, at least seven suspects have been arrested in Punjab and Haryana for alleged spying activities for Pakistan.

Two booked for serving biryani to flood victims

Kanpur: Farrukhabad police on Sunday arrested two persons for breach of peace following a dispute over allegedly serving chicken biryani to flood victims who were strictly vegetarians. The biryani was allegedly served by a local village head Mohd Shami and his sons Talib and Saif among others. While Saif and another individual were arrested, the village head, one of his sons and one other remain at large. Sunil Kumar of Raipur Chinhatpur village, reported that around 5pm on Saturday, Mohammad Shami, Talib and Saif Ali from Nurpur Garhia, and Sami alias Mustaqeem from Qazi Tola arrived in the village with food packets. While consuming the food, villagers discovered pieces of meat and bones. When they raised the issue, the village head got agitated. The villagers recorded a video of the incident and circulated it on social media before reporting it to the police. On Sunday morning, villagers accompanied by vice-president of the Vishwa Hindu Mahasabha Cow Protection Cell Yuvraj Singh Chauhan, and district convener of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad Praveen Awasthi reached the police station and accused the village head and his sons of deliberately serving non-veg food to hurt religious sentiments. Kampil police station incharge Vishwanath Arya said an FIR under section 352 of BNS (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) was filed against the village head and four others and two have been arrested. Meanwhile, village head Mohd Shami appeared on social media and dismissed all allegations as baseless. "I had no role in the food distribution. People of Rampur came in boats and were distributing the food. My opponents are making false accusations," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
