Demna Makes the Move to Gucci as Creative Director After 10 Years at Balenciaga
Demna Gvasalia is making the move from Balenciaga to Gucci, Los Angeles' American Contemporary Ballet debuts two new works, James Fuentes presents Jim Jarmusch's first solo exhibition in L.A. and Courteney Cox's Homecourt launches a laundry collection.
Georgian fashion designer Demna Gvasalia, known mononymously as Demna, is leaving Balenciaga to become the new artistic director of Gucci in July.
Following on from stints at Maison Martin Margiela and Louis Vuitton, Demna launched the brand Vetements with his brother Guram Gvasalia in 2014 and has served as artistic director of Balenciaga since 2015.
Demna succeeds Sabato De Sarno, who exited Gucci in early February after two years. There is no word yet on who will replace him at Balenciaga.
'Demna's contribution to the industry, to Balenciaga and to the Group's success has been tremendous,' François-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of Kering (which owns both Balenciaga and Gucci), said. 'His creative power is exactly what Gucci needs. As I thank him for everything he has accomplished over the past 10 years, I look forward to seeing him shape Gucci's new artistic direction.'
This will not be the first time Demna has worked with the Italian fashion house. In 2021, he collaborated with Gucci's Alessandro Michele on a Hacker Project in which Michele unveiled a Gucci collection that included interpretations of the silhouettes and emblems of Demna's Balenciaga, while Demna created a range of conceptual interpretations of Gucci's recognizable signatures as Balenciaga products.
The two brands also happen to share a deep connection to Los Angeles, drawing inspiration from the city's unique vibe and fashion culture for various collections. While at Balenciaga, Demna has celebrated L.A.'s distinctive style, created handbags called the Bel-Air and the Rodeo, and chose Hancock Park as the venue for its Fall 2024 show. Similarly, while at Gucci, Michele brought his Spring 2022 collection, 'Love Parade' – a tribute to the city's spirit of individuality and self-expression – to Hollywood Boulevard and designed a Chateau Marmont-inspired resort collection in 2019.

Los Angeles' American Contemporary Ballet has debuted two new shows to be performed at Bank of America Plaza.
'ACB Jazz' fuses ballet with the popular dances of the 1920s and '30s, set to songs by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Johnny Dodds, while 'Homecoming' – billed as ACB's 'biggest and most original ballet' – reinterprets drill and yell squad choreography on pointe, complete with cheerleaders and a marching band. Both are the creations of founder and choreographer Lincoln Jones.
'Like the Metropolitan Opera and New York City Ballet, which give patrons a fuller and more varied arts experience, we want to give people here in Los Angeles the opportunity to see two different shows in the same week,' Jones said.
Founded in New York City in 2004, the company moved to L.A. in 2011. The company performs over 60 shows each season, spanning a repertory which includes works by George Balanchine, Fred Astaire, Lincoln Jones and reconstructions of the seminal works of ballet's history.
ACB is the only ballet company in L.A. to perform exclusively to live music, played by some of the city's finest classical musicians. Audiences are seated at stage level, allowing for a rare visceral connection with the beauty and athleticism of ballet.
Every performance is followed by a reception with the dancers and musicians, and audiences can engage further with the art form through the company's conversations and dancing school programs.
The James Fuentes Gallery in Melrose Hill will present Jim Jarmusch's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, 'Some More Collages,' which debuts a new series of his iconic hand-torn newsprint collages.
Celebrated for his work in independent cinema, Jarmusch's output spans a number of creative disciplines including film, visual art, poetry and music. He has long collected newspaper clippings to form an archive of source material for his collages. He likens their creation to the process of automatic writing, each action unfolding naturally, without over-analysis or predetermination. Through this mode, the collages reflect Jarmusch's wider creative philosophy.
For Jarmusch, the collages serve as a private, integral part of his creative process and were never initially intended for public display. Over decades, he quietly amassed more than 500 of the works, created spontaneously and without concern for an audience. The James Fuentes exhibitions — first in New York in 2021, and now in L.A. — mark the only occasions where he has publicly exhibited this deeply personal body of work.
Born in Akron, Ohio, in 1953, Jarmusch attended Columbia University and New York University in the late 1970s. He has directed films including 'The Dead Don't Die' (2019), 'Paterson' (2016), 'Only Lovers Left Alive' (2013), 'Broken Flowers' (2005), 'Dead Man' (1999), 'Down by Law' (1986) and 'Stranger than Paradise' (1984). As a musician, he has also created numerous soundtracks and studio albums, including with the band SQÜRL. In 2023, SQÜRL crafted an original score for the first-ever 4K restoration of four films by Man Ray, titled 'Return to Reason.'
'Some More Collages' will be on view March 29–April 26 at James Fuentes Gallery, 5015 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles.

Andrew Rannells and Nick Kroll Go on a Babymoon in 'I Don't Understand You' originally appeared on L.A. Mag. Writers, directors and husbands David Joseph Craig and Brian Crano had one major stipulation after their comedic thriller I Don't Understand You opened to an uproarious response at the South by Southwest fest in March 2024: They wanted it to run in cinemas.'Our biggest takeaway … which is why we pushed so hard [for] a theatrical release, was the infectious temperature we got [from] seeing [the audience] react at the same time,' Craig says. 'I want other people to have that same feeling.'Star Nick Kroll agrees. 'The best movies to see in the theater are the ones that make you laugh collectively and get scared shitless collectively, and this film has both of those feelings in spades,' he says.I Don't Understand You, distributed by Vertical, hits theaters nationwide June 6. Kroll teams with Andrew Rannells as husbands Dom and Cole on an anniversary trip to Italy. The couple are anxiously awaiting the birth of their soon-to-be-adopted child. When they veer into the Italian countryside one evening, however, they experience a series of unfortunate misunderstandings — virtually all stemming from their inability to speak the native tongue. 'The first act of the film is sort of autobiographical,' Craig recalls. 'We were going on our 10th anniversary trip to Italy, and right before the trip we found out we had matched with [a] birth mother and that she was due in a couple weeks. We decided to make [the trip] our babymoon. And on the night of our actual anniversary, we were driving to this remote pizza restaurant, and Brian directed me off the side of the road and we got stuck in a ditch for about five hours.'Crano says they were in what felt like 'The Hills Have Eyes' section of Italy. Luckily, a local family rescued the pair and fed them pizza and grappa well into the wee hours of the morning. Still, the incident birthed an idea of how things might've gone horribly writing I Don't Understand You, Craig and Crano's real-life personalities naturally bled onto the page, though the pair say the film is a 'fun-house mirror' version of themselves. Kroll and Rannells immediately picked up on the couple's rapport. 'It was easy to see from the jump who was who in the script,' Kroll says. 'We were able to draw on that as we built our characters leading up to production. But also, being in production in a foreign country is its own adventure, with highs and lows. And being able to observe David and Brian individually and as a couple who were working together was very informative and helpful.'Rannells notes the intense location shoot with an entirely Italian crew helped him quickly adapt to the iconic surroundings, even though it was his first time visiting Rome.'When you have to casually walk by the Spanish Steps or the Trevi Fountain to get to work, you really feel like a local,' he in the film, as Dom and Cole cruise the Italian countryside, a familiar Southern California voice provides the soundtrack to their upcoming adventure. 'I had just watched a beautiful documentary about Linda Ronstadt, so she was most definitely on my mind,' Rannells explains. 'When David and Brian asked me about song ideas, ['Different Drum'] popped into my head. … It seemed like a good tone to set for our characters before things got unexpectedly intense.'Even in 2025, stories centered on gay men feel a bit anomalous, particularly when divorced from being presented as tragedies like Brokeback Mountain or It's a Sin'We wanted to depict queer characters [where] there wasn't something queer happening to them all the time — [that] we're not always victims,' Craig explains.'I think we contain multitudes,' Crano adds, then describes a scene that depicts 'gay joy' without the sting of something horrific — a scene that's so moving you'll have to watch the film to find out.'We need to expand the genre of LGBTQ films,' Craig says. 'I feel like we're finally at a place where we might not need that genre anymore, and we can expand ourselves into drama and comedy while having queer characters. Southern-Leaning American Bistro Cannonball Dives Into South Pasadena
One of northeast Los Angeles's most charming neighborhoods, South Pasadena, welcomed Cannonball on May 2, a new restaurant from Hippo chef Matt Molina and operating partner Joe Capella. The sprawling multi-floor space, previously occupied by Piccolo, has original brick walls, an extensive vintage wine list, cocktails, and farmers-market-derived seasonal produce. It's potentially the most exciting new restaurant to open in the area in a few years (its most recent was 2023's debut of Katsu Jin on Fair Oaks). With Molina and Capella steering the ship, South Pasadena has a grown-up restaurant for drinks and classic American dishes, coupled with reasonable prices. Molina, who won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Pacific of 2012 for his work at Osteria Mozza, has had a strong run with Capella at Arts District's Everson Royce Bar (opened in 2015), which is also co-founded and co-owned by Randy Clement and April Langford (Good Neighbor Bar, Silver Lake Wine). The foursome opened Hippo in Highland Park and Triple Beam alongside Nancy Silverton in 2018, cementing their place in northeast LA's dining scene. Molina's relationships with farmers at the South Pasadena Farmers Market, a main source for Hippo's produce, led him and Capella to check out the former Piccolo. The former Venice-based Italian restaurant had expanded to Mission Street in 2022 but closed just a year later in spring 2023 (it still operates in Santa Monica). Cannonball is Capella and Molina's first collaboration, opened without involvement from Clement, Langford, and Silverton. 'Hippo was in a good spot and we wanted to do something in this neighborhood [South Pasadena,' says Molina. 'I grew up in SGV and first heard about it when our friend Steven Arroyo opened something here. He was always ahead of the game. It's so charming here, but a lot of people in Northeast LA don't know about it, or the farmers market.' After a career spent in Hollywood and Mid-City at Osteria Mozza and Campanile, Molina has become acclimated to this part of town. Molina sees a similarity to New York City restaurateurs [like Gabe Stulman], who open multiple concepts in a particular neighborhood to serve a similar audience. Like Everson Royce Bar, Molina anchors the menu with his signature flaky biscuits with honey butter and a single-patty burger made with ground chuck and Tillamook cheddar. Starters include shaved celery salad with medjool dates, roasted carrots with cumin vinaigrette, and fideos with clams, chorizo, and saffron. Most starters range $12 to $24, bucking the trend of inflationary prices that seem to affect most new LA restaurants. A short list of six mains includes the burger with fries for $23, and extends to barbecue pork loin with Anson Mills polenta, grilled prawns, or grilled New York steak with pommes aligot. An olive cake with a side of crème fraiche is the sole dessert. Molina says the menu will not feature pasta during its opening phase, but he might add some in the future. Beverages at Cannonball are another strong suit, with Joe Capella's extensive wine and spirits knowledge on full display. Capella priced the wines to drink now (he would like the entire inventory to turn over every six months), with glasses between $14 and $17, and a long bottle list with prices that are often lower than online retail. He was inspired by places he's visited in Stockholm and Japan that price wine and spirits at an accessible level and allow enthusiasts to actually 'taste the fruits' of often labor-intensive curation. 'We're not trying to profit disproportionately just because it's rare and in demand,' Capella told Eater over email. There are plenty of wines priced between the high-$30s and mid-$40s, alongside higher-end bottles for those looking to ball out. Cocktails come from a longtime relationship with Varnish co-founder Eric Alperin, who advised on the drinks and helped install lead bartender Wolfgang Alexander at Cannonball. Drinks reflect the Milk & Honey school of bartenders with playful takes on classics like the Raymond Hill (Manhattan) using bourbon, amaro lucano, Pedro Ximénez sherry, and mole. Fettle Design helped preserve the building's main interior, hoping to conjure a New York, East Coast, and London feel that stands in contrast to places like Hippo. Capella and Fettle saw the moody space working with a darker color palette; tasteful landscape art, vintage lighting, indoor plants, and pops of old-timey wallpaper complete the look. A more cheerful patio with French cafe-style chairs and greenery works well as an al fresco summer dinner. Eventually, service will expand daily to later hours and a daytime menu on weekends (no weekday lunch, though). With two industry veterans at the helm and a versatile, classic ambience — plus the very approachable food — Cannonball has brightened South Pasadena's dining scene in a big way.
