This Week in Explainers: How a trade pact with the UK benefits India
It's been a week of diplomatic wins for India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to the United Kingdom and the Maldives, both visits historic in their own way.
In the UK, the much-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was signed. For India, this is the first big trade pact with a major Western nation. And for Britain, it is the most significant deal after Brexit. The agreement is going to be a boon to both nations. We tell you all about it.

After the UK, Modi headed to the Maldives for a two-day visit, starting Friday (July 25). The trip signals a reset in ties. The PM, who was invited by Maldvian President Mohamed Muizzu, will attend the island nation's 60th Independence Day celebrations as a guest of honour. It's a long way from the 'India Out' campaign that hit ties between the two nations when Muizzu came to power.
Talking about the neighbourhood, China is always looking to poke India. It has started construction of the world's largest dam near Arunachal Pradesh. India is building another dam on the Brahmaputra. Are water wars in the making?
Now, let's move to Indian politics. The shock resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar created quite a stir. While the VP cited health as the reason for stepping down, there is more to it than meets the eye, according to buzz in political circles.
In defence news, the Indian Air Force's workhorse, the MiG-21, will be phased out of active service by September. It will be replaced by the newer Tejas Mk1A fighter jets.
In our weekly roundup, we bring you stories about India that you shouldn't miss.
1. All eyes have been on the India-UK Free Trade Agreement. The much-awaited pact, which was in the making for years, was finally signed on Thursday (July 24) during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's UK visit. So what's this landmark deal about? How will India benefit from it? And what will get cheaper? We answer the big questions.

2. Ties between India and the Maldives have come full circle. The two sides have historically enjoyed deep-rooted ties. While there was a strain with Mohamed Muizzu's 'India Out' campaign, New Delhi took an engagement-over-escalation approach. Now, PM Modi's visit was seen as a strategic embrace, a reset of ties. However, India has always been a bankable neighbour, helping build airports, a hospital, a cricket stadium and more in the Maldives.

3. China is calling it the 'project of the century'. It has started building the world's biggest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo. This river flows into India – it's the Brahmaputra. New Delhi is watching closely. India has also sped up work on a dam in Arunachal Pradesh's Siang district. Is a water war between the two neighbours inevitable?

4. From geopolitics, we shift our attention to domestic politics. In a move that came as a big surprise, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as vice president on Monday night (July 21). While he cited medical reasons for his sudden decision, the Opposition cast doubt over it. The announcement came hours after Dhankhar presided over the sitting of the Rajya Sabha as chairperson on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. So why did he step down?
5. Dhankhar's resignation leaves the post of the vice president vacant. The VP also serves as ex officio chairman of the Rajya Sabha. So what happens now? How will the next vice president be elected? We explain.
6. After 62 years in service, the Indian Air Force will phase out the MiG-21 fighter jet aircraft by September 2025. It will be replaced by the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mark 1A. The new version of the Tejas is being developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). Here's how it will boost India's defence.

The newer Tejas fighter jets (seen in the picture) will replace the MiG-21.
7. Our last story is about a scandal from Uttar Pradesh. It is unlike any you may have heard before. Harshvardhan Jain, a 45-year-old from Ghaziabad, posed as the ambassador of Westarctica, an unrecognised micronation in Antarctica. He ran a fake embassy from a bungalow for at least seven years and has now been arrested. Here's how the scam unfolded.

INDIA bloc urges ECI to halt Bihar voter revision, alleges flawed data and exclusion risk
NEW DELHI: With over 65 lakh voters at risk of exclusion after the first phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the INDIA bloc on Sunday demanded that the Election Commission of India (ECI) immediately halt the process, citing concerns over data integrity and procedural opacity. At a joint press conference in Patna, leaders from Congress, RJD, CPI(ML), and CPI(M) launched a strong attack on the poll body, accusing it of conducting the revision exercise based on 'opacity' and termed it 'institutional arrogance'. They also disputed the ECI's claim that lists of deceased and relocated voters had been shared with political parties. In a joint statement, the opposition bloc said, 'Our apprehension is turning out to be true. We had warned that this drive would ultimately lead to the exclusion of nearly two crore people. The EC is basing voter deletions on flawed form-based data. The scrutiny is not over; more exclusions are likely in the coming month. We will go to the people on this issue. Even NDA allies are seeing their voters affected.' Speaking at the press meet Congress Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi alleged that the exercise lacks transparency and precision. 'The entire exercise reeks of institutional arrogance. There are too many inconsistencies and no clarity. This is not a correction exercise; this is exclusion in the name of verification,' he said.

Good if US trade pact sealed by August 1, but nation first: Piyush Goyal
Commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday said it would be good if India and the US can do a trade agreement before August 1 but New Delhi's priority is to protect its national and public interests. "Koi deadline ke hisab se Bharat negotiate nahi karta (India doesn't negotiate its trade agreements based on deadlines)," Goyal added at an event in Mumbai on the opportunities for exports in the UK market following the bilateral free trade agreement. The minister said the talks are going well with the US and India will do a good bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by October-November. American trade negotiators are slated to visit India in August for the next round of negotiations for the proposed BTA, the first tranche of which is aimed to be concluded by October. The fifth round of talks concluded in Washington last week. The countries aim to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion. The two sides were working to finalise an interim trade deal before August 1. "Our discussions with the United States are progressing very well. I am fully confident that by the October-November 2025 timeline, we will secure a good agreement," Goyal said. This was his first outreach programme with industry after the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) was signed on July 24. Exporters from gems and jewellery and marine sectors, among others, participated in the event. "It is the most comprehensive free trade agreement India has ever entered with 30 chapters, including environment, gender, anti-corruption," Goyal said about CETA. "It has so many positives and new things that today the world wants to do business with India." He said India is in the process of finalising trade agreements with developed countries with whom it doesn't compete but complement. Whether it is New Zealand, Oman, the US, or the EU, India's agreements will be made with a "well-thought-out strategy" as the country negotiates from a position of strength and confidence, the minister said. He alleged that the previous UPA government had left Indian trade, farmers and fishermen to the mercy of a non-market economy by its move to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), a free trade agreement between Asean countries and China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

Chandigarh Cong says no to India-Pakistan cricket matches
Times News Network Chandigarh: Chandigarh Congress on Sunday demanded that the central government not allow India-Pakistan cricket matches during the Asia Cup tournament at a neutral venue. The Congress said that people were upset with the agreement to resume cricket ties with Pakistan. "On the one hand, Operation Sindoor , initiated to teach Pakistan a lesson for its acts of terror, was not called off. On the other hand, the cricket boards of both countries decided to foster friendly sporting relations with each other. In such circumstances, India cannot play cricket matches with Pakistan. A huge amount of money invested by Indian sponsors will go to the coffers of the bankrupt Pakistani Cricket Board, which could be used to perpetrate further terror attacks in India," Congress said.
