Centre not conducting social, educational, economic survey like us: Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah
Davanagere (Karnataka): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday stated that to ensure social justice, it is essential to understand the social and economic conditions of the people.
He emphasised that a fresh survey is necessary for this purpose and further underlined that the Union Government is not conducting a social, economic, and educational survey.
Speaking to reporters in Davanagere, the Chief Minister said the Union Government is conducting the Census from 2027 but has not indicated that it will conduct a social, educational, and economic survey.
"What we are doing is a social, educational, and economic survey, which also includes a caste census," he clarified.
CM Siddaramaiah added, "We have no objection to the Union Government conducting the census. However, there is a difference between our survey and theirs regarding the social, educational, and economic aspects.'
Objections were raised by both the general and weaker sections of society regarding the caste census report. Most importantly, Section 11(1) of the Karnataka Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prohibition of Transfer of Certain Lands) Act mandates a re-survey after 10 years of the previous report, CM Siddaramaiah clarified.
He stated that the current re-survey is being undertaken based on this provision.
Minister for Social Welfare H.C. Mahadevappa stated in Bengaluru that a caste census is necessary for delivering good administration, but the BJP has never undertaken such an exercise.
He added that the BJP, which has been ruling at the Centre for the last two terms, has not bothered to conduct a caste census, implying that what was needed has not been done at all.
"Every day, the population of the country is increasing, and measures to control the population need to be undertaken. The number of constituencies should not be increased on the basis of population," he stated.
Senior Congress MLA, Laxman Savadi stated in Bengaluru that to address the shortcomings of the caste census, the state government is undertaking a fresh survey.
According to Savadi, a few communities had opposed the caste census report, and to address this, the Congress high command had spoken to the Chief Minister, leading to the announcement of a fresh survey. He believes this new survey will rectify the lapses in the older one.
Savadi further added, "This would help us. Let the central government also carry out a caste census; our caste census will help to analyze facts."

Power hike will keep industry, investors away: Akhilesh
Lucknow: Samajwadi party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said there were reports that the BJP government was all set to hike the power tariff in the state and the move will further deter new industry and investments away from Uttar Pradesh. "The BJP government has failed to set up a single new power production other than those installed during the Samajwadi Party government. They have failed to add a single unit of power to the production capacity of the state. Poor upkeep has left the infrastructure in shambles. Transformers are developing snags and people are rendered without power for days despite the rising summer temperatures," Akhilesh said, slamming the BJP government for deliberately ignoring the power sector to facilitate its privatisation. "Now, there are reports that the government is planning to increase power tariff in rural as well as urban areas. This will only discourage new industry and investment from coming to UP. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav slams Congress over Karnataka caste survey, calls it 'political cover-up'
New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Union Minister Bhupender Yadav on Monday accused the Congress-led Karnataka government of misusing public funds and attempting a 'political cover-up' through its re-enumeration of the 2015 caste survey. 'The reason India was considered a fragile economy in 2014 was due to the Congress party's misuse of taxpayers' money through corruption and broke their trust. They must answer how Rs 165 crore was spent when Congress itself is now questioning the accuracy of that data. Who will take responsibility for that expenditure? Either they were simply travelling, as they often do,' said Yadav. 'Congress is repeating its old patterns, and we demand accountability for Karnataka's costly exercise. Their re-survey is nothing more than a political cover-up,' said Yadav. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav also accused the Congress party, accusing it of consistently betraying the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and reducing social justice to a mere political slogan. 'The OBC community has always been betrayed by the Congress. If the Congress had genuine intent, it would have formed a new commission after scrapping the Kaka Kalelkar Commission... Instead, they dismissed the commission's report and continued to rule... Later, when the Mandal Commission was constituted and the Supreme Court upheld its legality, the Congress worked to weaken the OBC Commission,' 'Congress has never stood with the poor, OBCs, or SC/ST communities. 'Misleading the OBC community has been Congress's policy; delivering justice to them has never been their intent,' Yadav said, reiterating the BJP's commitment to inclusive welfare and empowerment. This comes after Siddaramaiah earlier said that they accepted the suggestion made by top Congress leadership to re-enumerate the case census data. 'Discussions were held regarding the caste census as concerns were raised by some organisations, religious heads, and even a few ministers. The report submitted on the caste census has been accepted in principle. There is an agreement that a caste enumeration should be conducted. We have also agreed to this,' he said. (ANI)
