Video shows lorry inches from head-on smash after careering onto wrong side of motorway
Peter Stone only had moments to react 'before getting flattened'
This is the hair-raising moment a lorry careered across the central reservation of the M5 and sped the wrong way down a busy motorway, narrowly missing a £100k Porsche. Peter Stone, 55, was driving home from a family trip to St Agnes in his Porsche 911 when a lorry came crashing towards him between junction 28 and junction 29 - between Cullompton and Exeter - at 12.23pm on Friday, August 1.

The dad-of-two - who was travelling northbound in the right--hand lane - had just seconds to react to avoid what could have been a fatal crash. He managed to swerve into the middle lane with just seconds to spare, as the lorry driver careered the wrong way down the busy carriageway.

Peter, who runs a fleet of vehicles for a waste company and is from Reading, Berkshire, said: "It literally came out of nowhere. I think I had less than two seconds to move before getting flattened by the tipper driver.

"It was quite difficult, my car is quite low down and the black car (in front) sort of obscured my view. I only really saw the truck - luckily it was yellow, so your peripheral vision can pick up bright colours and stuff.
Peter said he only had a couple of seconds to react
"The black car moved out in front of me, I had a white motorhome beside me and I managed to go in between them. It was just a reflex reaction really. I'm very surprised no-one actually smashed into the truck.

"I did speak to the transport company because I wanted to make sure no-one was injured before offering to share the footage. I pulled over straight away and called 999, assuming there was going to be some serious injuries. Fortunately, as far as I'm aware, no one was injured - which is quite remarkable."
Peter captured the scene of destruction on his front and rear dashcams, which were installed by the dealership when he purchased the vehicle back in December. Peter, who has an HGV licence himself, said: "You've seen videos of trucks crossing central reservations, but for it to happen straight in front of you is bizarre.
"Until I reviewed the video I hadn't even realised I was in the fast lane. In my recall I thought I must have been in the middle lane, there's no way I could have been in the third lane.

"I've had two nights of uninterrupted sleep replaying it in my mind, trying to come to terms with basically probably being two seconds from serious injury or even worse."
A National Highways spokesperson said no serious injuries had been reported following the crash. Police and ambulance attended the crash. The motorway was closed in both directions for just over an hour, with lanes one and two reopening at around 1.30pm to traffic.

Repairs took place overnight and the road fully reopened at around 3.30am on Saturday morning, the spokesperson said. Devon & Cornwall Police and South West Ambulance Service were contacted for comment.

Driver caught doing 'record' speed on Germany's autobahn at 124mph over the limit

The motorist was snared by police on a stretch of the road with a 75mph limit and was doing almost three times that speed Police in Germany caught a driver on the autobahn doing 199mph (320kph) which was a staggering 124mph over the road's speed limit. The motorist was snared on a highway near to Berlin last month. ‌ The Porsche driver was said to be motoring at close to three times the speed limit for that stretch of the road before being caught in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, west of Berlin. Their name and age have not been released. ‌ German authorities said they issued a €900 (£785) fine and a three-month suspension of their licence. And the driver also had two points added from their licence. ‌ If you rack up eight points in Germany, you can have your licence permanently revoked. As per the Independent, the speeding motorist was caught by a roadside radar stand which is known as a 'Enforcement Trailer' on the A2 highway near Burg on July 28. And a reading from its display reportedly showed 'the highest record speed' of 321kph, police said. Germany's autobahns, or motorways, are known for their lack of speed limit in places. However, there are some certain sections. The speed limits tend to be in areas with more traffic congestion. ‌ Autobahns can also introduce limits when roadworks are in place. The speeder was caught in an area with a 75mph (120km/h) limit. The lack of consistent speed limits on the autobahns has been the subject of debate over the years with authorities and driving clubs airing their views on whether they should be limited. ‌ A poll in 2019 found that around half of Germans were opposed to speed restrictions on their highways. Around a third of the autobahn network does have an upper limit of 81 mph (130kph), roughly 8,000 miles of road. But an eighth has no limit and is derestricted, according to Green Flag. Green Flag say: "One moment you may see a wide open space in your rear mirror and pull out to overtake. The next there is an irate driver flashing his lights for you to move over." Where there are speed limits, it is to regulate noise near urban centres and reduce safety risks on roads deemed unfit for unlimited speeding. In 2019, a poll found roughly half of Germans remain opposed to autobahn speed limits. ‌ To combat excessive speeds on the autobahn, major German car manufacturers, except for Porsche, are said to follow a gentleman's agreement and limit the top speeds of their powerful cars. However, these limiters can be deactivated. Slower vehicles with a top speed of less than 60mph are banned from using the road network. Scooters and motorbikes with low engine capacity cannot use the autobahns either.

Legendary car brand AXES hugely popular SUV after 24 years with ‘no plans to replace it'

A LONG-running SUV that's been a huge favourite among UK drivers is set to be axed - and nothing is being lined up to replace it. After 24 years, Volkswagen is reportedly set to stop production of the Touareg in 2026. 4 4 4 4 The premium SUV, first launched in 2002, was developed alongside the original Porsche Cayenne - with Porsche existing under the Volkswagen umbrella - in a bid to elevate VW's brand image. But, according to Autocar, the German giants are now happy to see the model reach the end of the road and leave the Tayron, a lower-cost SUV with broader appeal, as its only SUV offering in the UK. Known for its luxurious interiors, advanced tech and strong towing capabilities, the Touareg appealed to drivers looking for both practicality and sophistication and over the years it gained a reputation for being a well-rounded SUV. With no direct successor planned, it surely signals the end of VW's push into the premium SUV market. According to a VW press release in 2023, more than 1.1 million people worldwide, including about 58,200 in the UK, have bought a Touareg during its two-decade run. What's more, the Touareg has already been off sale in the US since 2017, having been replaced by the more mainstream Atlas. Autocar has also reported that VW plans to discontinue the ID 5. Unlike the Touareg, the ID 5 has a much shorter history, having been launched in 2021 as a coupe-styled sibling to the ID 4. It was primarily targeted at the Chinese market but struggled to gain much popularity there, while in Europe, buyers have often favoured the more practical ID 4. The ID 5 was also never introduced to the US market. VW said they intend to cease production of the ID 5 in 2027 as part of its efforts to streamline its model range. This comes as, back in May, VW CEO Thomas Schafer revealed its fan-favourite GTI performance range is set to continue into its all-electric future. In fact, the German marque promises it will be better than ever, with multiple model lines confirmed by Schafer, who claims these new machines will be "mind-blowing" to drive. Set to go electric in 2026, the GTI range will start with the ID-named GTI concept – a souped-up iteration of the ID 2 supermini. Naturally, a GTI version of the forthcoming all-electric ninth-generation Golf will also arrive by the end of the decade, marking the beginning of 'a whole group of GTI" models set to roll out in subsequent years. Work is reportedly already under way on the development of the first electric GTI models, with particular attention being paid to ensuring they are just as fun to drive as their predecessors. However, with the current petrol-powered car set to remain on sale for several more years, the production version of the electric Golf GTI will not appear in showrooms for some time.
