Instagram Reiterates That Location Sharing is an Optional Feature
Well, that escalated quickly.
After announcing its new Friend Map feature yesterday, Instagram has been flooded with misguided complaints and concerns about how the new feature will expose people's locations without them knowing, potentially putting millions of people at risk.
To recap, Instagram's new Friend Map will show you where your friends are at any given time, while also highlighting places friends have been, via location-tagged Stories that they've posted.
Which is pretty much the same as the Snap Map, but Snapchat doesn't have as many users, and as such, it didn't see the same level of backlash that Instagram's now seeing, with many users complaining that location sharing like this is unsafe, and could even get someone killed.
What's important to note, however, is that the feature is opt-in, so it is not switched on for anyone without their knowledge.
As explained by Instagram in its announcement post:
'You can opt into sharing your last active location with friends you pick, and you can turn it off anytime. You can also open the map to see content your friends and favorite creators are posting from cool spots. No matter how you use the map, you and your friends have a new, lightweight way to connect with each other.'
Note the first line, 'you can opt in' to sharing your location, but you don't have to, and your location won't be shown unless you manually switch it on.
But the wording may have been unclear, because Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has been forced to reiterate this point:
'Your location will only be shared *if* you decide to share it, and if you do, it can only shared with a limited group of people you choose. To start, location sharing is *completely off.* If you do decide to share your location, the three options are a custom list you make, your Close Friends list, or followers you follow back.'
So it's not randomly exposing everybody to the world, and showing where you are, and what you're doing at all time.
Mosseri has also clarified the process for Stories location-sharing:
'If you tag a location in your story, that story will show up on the map for 24 hours. As always with Stories, this only shows the place you tagged to your followers - it does not share your real-time or live location.'
Some users claim that location services was turned on by default, and is now showing their location in the app. But it is a manual setting, and the only way that this would be switched on may be if users have enabled such in the past, for Instagram's other location-tagging features.
So it may be possible that you're showing on the IG map without you manually activating it for this exact purpose. But you can also switch location sharing off, both in the app and in your device settings.
Instagram has also built in some additional privacy features, like an option to hide selected locations from the map, even if you are sharing your info:
So to clarify, you're not sharing your location to everyone on Instagram, and you have full control and capacity to switch it off. Friend Map sharing is not switched on by default, and the only way to activate location sharing is via manual control.
So if you don't like it, don't use it, and no one will know where you are in the app.

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke to step down, plans new startup
(Reuters) -GitHub Chief Executive Thomas Dohmke said on Monday he will leave the Microsoft-owned code-hosting platform to launch a new startup, capping a tenure that included a major push into artificial intelligence through the company's Copilot products. Dohmke, who moved to the U.S. from Germany more than a decade ago after selling his startup to Microsoft, said his "startup roots" prompted the decision. "I've decided to leave GitHub to become a founder again," he said in a blog post, but did not provide details about the new venture. Before becoming CEO, Dohmke helped lead mobile developer tools at Microsoft and worked on GitHub's acquisition alongside former CEO Nat Friedman. Microsoft acquired GitHub in a $7.5 billion all-stock deal in 2018. More than 150 million developers use GitHub's tools to build, maintain and collaborate on software projects, according to the company's website. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Dohmke's successor. His transition period concludes at the end of the year. Dohmke said that under his leadership, GitHub expanded globally, earned U.S. FedRAMP certification for federal use and doubled AI projects on the platform. Axios, which first reported the news, said Microsoft developer division head Julia Liuson will oversee GitHub's revenue, engineering and support. GitHub's chief product officer, Mario Rodriguez, will report to head of product for Microsoft's AI platform Asha Sharma, according to the report. Sign in to access your portfolio

Why Micron Stock Popped Again Today
Key Points Micron changed its guidance today, raising forecasts for revenue and profit. The company earned only $0.70 last year per share, but could earn more than $8 this year. Micron's free cash flow continues to lag reported net income. 10 stocks we like better than Micron Technology › Micron (NASDAQ: MU) updated investors this morning with new guidance for its fiscal Q4 2025, which is currently underway. Shares of the semiconductor stock jumped 2.5% through 12:15 p.m. ET in response. What's Micron earning in Q4? Previously, Micron had told investors it would collect $10.7 billion in Q4 revenue, plus or minus $300 million -- so $11 billion max. Now, the company says it will beat that number, aiming for $11.2 billion, and potentially as much as $11.3 billion, and certainly more than $11 billion. Gross profit margins earned are also inching higher, with 43.5% the target instead of a previous guess of 41%. As a result, Micron is boosting its bottom-line forecast. Instead of $2.14 to $2.44, management says the company could earn from $2.57 to $2.71 per share. That's an extra $0.35 per share in profit. Management -- understandably -- tooted its own horn a bit, crediting "improved pricing, particularly in DRAM" for the extra earnings it expects to make, but also "strong execution." Is Micron stock a buy now? Once analysts get around to adding the extra $0.35 to their forecasts, it should raise consensus estimates to $8.17 for this year's Micron earnings per share. On a $122 share price, that works out to a P/E ratio of about 15 -- not a very high multiple for a stock that's now expecting to grow full-year earnings 600% year over year! All this said, Micron hasn't yet stated what its free cash flow for the year might be, and right now, it's FCF that's Micron's Achilles' heel (it's running about one-third of reported net income). Speaking personally, I'm going to wait and see that number before deciding to change my mind and declare Micron stock a buy. Do the experts think Micron Technology is a buy right now?
