
Porsche 911 GT3 secures Nürburgring record
The achievement underscores Porsche's commitment to driver-focused engineering, particularly at a time when fully automated systems and dual-clutch gearboxes dominate the performance car landscape.
This record is especially significant considering the vehicle was equipped with a traditional six-speed manual gearbox rather than the brand's quicker, seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission.
The 911 GT3, fitted with the Weissach package, delivered a performance that exceeded its predecessor's PDK-assisted lap by 3.633 seconds, illustrating the substantial improvements made across key performance areas.
Among the developments contributing to the enhanced pace were revisions to the suspension setup and chassis, largely influenced by insights gained from the more extreme 911 GT3 RS.
The new model also features a revised gear ratio, shortened by eight per cent, which provides improved acceleration characteristics despite maintaining the same power output of 510PS.
Track conditions during the record attempt were ideal, with ambient temperatures at 12°C and the asphalt warmed to 27°. The vehicle ran on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres – street-legal yet track-capable – with sizes 255/35 R20 at the front and 315/30 R21 at the rear, the same configuration used during the official lap of the earlier GT3 model.
This attempt was conducted under notarial supervision to validate the timing, and the focus was clear from the outset: to demonstrate the true potential of the manual transmission variant.
Porsche engineers had closely analysed the current lap leaderboard, noting that the previous record holder completed the shorter 20.6 km version of the circuit in 7 minutes and 1.300 seconds. When translated to the full track, that performance equated to approximately 7 minutes and 5.800 seconds – a target the new GT3 surpassed with confidence.
Andreas Preuninger, who leads Porsche's GT model development, explained that customer demand for manual variants has grown significantly. Many owners have expressed curiosity about the capabilities of a manual-equipped GT3 on the Nordschleife. Porsche's decision to pursue this lap time was, in part, a direct response to that enthusiasm.
Although a PDK version would likely have been marginally quicker, the manual car's record lap showcased not only its competitive performance but also the rewarding engagement it offers.
Bergmeister, reflecting on his experience, noted that the car was noticeably more stable over undulations and kerbs, inspiring confidence and allowing for higher cornering speeds. He added that the effort required to manage gear changes manually made the lap all the more exhilarating.
With this new lap time, the Porsche 911 GT3 has not only reclaimed a coveted title but also reaffirmed its role as a modern-day performance icon – one that embraces tradition without compromising on technological advancement.
The manual transmission, far from being obsolete, continues to provide a visceral and rewarding experience that resonates with purists and enthusiasts alike.

SOME of our celebrities and tycoons are a peculiar lot. They own not one but several multi-million-dollar vehicles, but have not bothered to renew their insurance and road tax. In an operation from June to this month by the Road Transport Department (RTD) — now in Op Luxury 3.0 mode — more than 1,000 such vehicles were identified. The reason? They drive them only on weekends, as if road traffic rules are held in abeyance for them on the two days. That response is pathetic. Remember this. No one is above the law, including celebrities and tycoons. What if on the "weekends" they injure someone or kill other road users? Are they willing to compensate them or their loved ones when they are not even willing to pay for the cars' insurance and road tax? Kifli issued a warning to the law-breaking rich and famous: "We will not compromise with any party who fails to comply with road transport regulations." But are they getting the message? The increasing number of vehicles seized suggests not. Here is why. They probably think that the price of breaking the law is as cheap as paying the paltry fine and renewing the insurance and road tax. RTD must punish the offenders more severely, especially the repeat offenders. Driving around for three years without valid insurance and road tax surely qualifies for the maximum punishment provided for under the Road Transport Act 1987. Had the driver of the Porsche Carrera not been stopped by RTD, he would probably continue breaking the law as the BMW X6 driver did for seven years until the law caught up with him in 2024. A month or two in prison is a good deterrent.

JPJ shared on Facebook last Saturday (10 August) that 258 luxury cars were seized nationwide in the operation's latest phase codenamed Ops Luxury 3.0, where 104 high-end vehicles including Ferrari, Range Rover, Porsche, and Ford Mustang models driven by both locals and foreigners were confiscated. Muhamad Kifli said the vehicles were seized for offences that included the driver not having a valid driver's licence, as well as expired road tax and insurance. A total of 627 summonses were issued in the last operation. 'Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest number of seizures with 93 vehicles, followed by Selangor with 61, Penang with 28, Sarawak with 16, and Kelantan with 15. 'All vehicles have been placed at the JPJ depot for futher investigation and were seized under the Road Transport Act 1987,' Muhamad Kifli said. Impounded vehicles will only be released after its owners renew their road tax and insurance Muhamad Kifli stressed that JPJ would not compromise with any party violating traffic regulations, and the periodic implementation of Ops Luxury will continue to be strengthened as part of JPJ's strategic efforts to safeguard the safety, well-being, and sustainability of Malaysia's transport sector. KUALA LUMPUR: A celebrity and a social media influencer, who had been under the Road Transport Department's (RTD) watch for failing to renew the road tax on their exotic vehicles, have now complied with the regulations. RTD senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said both individuals came forward today. "Checks revealed that one had not renewed their road tax for a year, while the other had failed to do so for two years. "Following our recent operations, many of these individuals have come forward to settle their road tax and insurance," he said when contacted. He added that those who had stepped forward included business tycoons and entrepreneurs. "The response has been encouraging. We urge others who have yet to renew their road tax and insurance to do so without delay. "Op Luxury will be conducted periodically to ensure all motorists comply with the law," he said, warning that surveillance, including the use of undercover officers, was part of their enforcement strategy. It was earlier reported that at least two celebrities were being monitored by the RTD for failing to renew the road tax and insurance on their luxury vehicles. Business tycoons and influencers are also on the list of those suspected of similar offences. According to intelligence, some of these individuals are registered owners of vehicles whose road tax is believed to have expired, although investigations indicate that the vehicles are not currently being driven on public roads. This is not the first time local celebrities have drawn RTD's attention over such violations. During the first phase of Op Luxury in June, a local actress's Porsche was among 101 luxury vehicles seized for not having valid road tax. The car was released after she renewed it on June 24. The public can report traffic violations via the MyJPJ app (e-Aduan) or by emailing aduantrafik@ with complete details. Op Luxury will continue to be carried out periodically to ensure only legal, safe and registered vehicles are allowed on Malaysian roads.
