For First Time, Streaming Viewing Topped Broadcast and Cable Combined in May
More and more, life is but a stream for us consumers of TV.
Nielsen's latest monthly viewership report, titled The Gauge, shows that for the month of May, TV viewing done via streaming eclipsed broadcast and cable combined for the first time ever.

According to The Gauge, streaming represented 44.8% of TV viewership in May — its largest share to date — while broadcast (with 20.1%) and cable (24.1%) combined to represent 44.2% of TV viewership.
Nielsen notes that since The Gauge's launch four years ago, streaming has seen a usage increase of 71%, while broadcast and cable viewing have declined (down 21% and 39%, respectively).
'It's fitting that this inflection point coincides with the four-year anniversary of Nielsen's The Gauge, which has become the gold standard for streaming TV measurement,' Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao said in a statement. 'It's also a credit to media companies, who have deftly adapted their programming strategies to meet their viewers where they are watching TV — whether it's on streaming or linear platforms.'
Also in that four-year span, several more streaming services are now reported on by The Gauge, by having attained a full share point of TV usage. They join the OGs Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Prime Video and Disney+.
Nielsen says that 'free services have been a major driver of streaming's overall success,' with YouTube Main (excluding YouTube TV) exhibiting steady, significant growth (+120%) since 2021. 'Additionally, FAST services have become increasingly popular, and three have reached the reportable threshold in The Gauge,' with PlutoTV, Roku Channel and Tubi combining for 5.7% of total TV viewing in May — more than any individual broadcast network.

Streaming Has Overtaken Traditional TV for the First Time Ever
Streaming became the most popular single form of TV usage years ago, but that was not its final hurdle. The juggernaut of broadcast and cable television combined meant that consumers were still using traditional TV services more than streaming overall, even if streaming was more popular than either of them individually. According to data from Nielsen, streaming just overcame this final hurdle. Nielsen says that in May, cable television accounted for 24.1% of all TV usage and broadcast TV represented 20.1% of all viewership for a total of 44.2%. Streaming services accounted for 44.8% of total viewership, just surpassing the combined efforts of cable and broadcast. This has happened on single days, namely during large events such as the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight on Netflix, but streaming has never sustained that edge for an entire month. The numbers were aided by the addition of more streaming services to Nielsen's metrics. The original list included streaming giants like Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, Hulu and Amazon's Prime Video. It was expanded to 11 total services and now includes the Roku Channel, Paramount+, Tubi, Peacock, and Warner Bros. Discovery. The next milestone for streaming will be keeping this lead for an entire quarter. For the time being, cable and broadcast still rule that statistic, combining for 57.6% of all TV streaming in the first quarter of 2025, with streaming comprising 42.4%. Should streaming keep its current lead, the second quarter of 2025 could mark the first quarter that streaming overtakes traditional TV and holds the lead. YouTube and Netflix winning big YouTube led the way for streaming services at a hefty 12.5% of viewership. Following that is Netflix, which remains the largest single video-on-demand service, a title it's held for four years in a row. Rounding out the top five is Disney via Disney+ and Hulu, Prime Video, and the Roku Channel. However, YouTube is the biggest winner. Not only does it lead all streaming services in market share, but it also has the highest share ever measured by Nielsen and leads the way in a growing segment of free, ad-supported services, also known as FAST services. The other FAST services measured by the data firm, including PlutoTV, the Roku Channel, and Tubi, combined for 5.7% of all TV viewing in May 2025, which is more than any individual broadcast network over the same time.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Streaming services, which have been steadily gaining in popularity, have finally dethroned broadcast and cable television in the U.S., winning more viewers in May than broadcast and cable combined, audience measurement firm Nielsen reported on Tuesday. Nielsen, in its monthly report The Gauge, said streaming captured 44.8% of total TV usage in the U.S. in May, highlighting the growing dominance of streaming platforms like YouTube and Netflix over the past four years. Google's YouTube alone accounted for 12.5% of all television viewing in May, representing the largest audience share for a streaming service. Free ad-supported streaming services, such as Paramount Global's PlutoTV, Roku Channel and Fox's Tubi, also have gained popularity, collectively capturing 5.7% of TV viewership, Nielsen reported. Broadcast accounted for 20% of TV viewership in May, while cable accounted for 24%, Nielsen said. The rise of streaming, which received a big boost during the COVID pandemic when people were forced to seek entertainment at home, reflects the broader transformation in media consumption, as viewers increasingly favor on-demand content over traditional TV schedules. The trend is reshaping the television landscape, with implications for advertisers and content creators alike.
