Zara's death exposes systemic failures: LDP
Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: 'This is not just about one child's death. It is about whether we are willing to confront systemic failures and take real action to ensure this never happens again,' Chin said. Kota Kinabalu: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir exposed systemic failures in protecting children and delivering justice. 'This is not just about one child's death. It is about whether we are willing to confront systemic failures and take real action to ensure this never happens again,' said its President Chin Shu Ying. Advertisement The Attorney-General's Chambers has ordered the exhumation of Zara's remains for a fresh post-mortem examination, which LDP welcomed as important for establishing the truth and restoring public confidence. However, he said the incident must catalyse broader institutional reforms beyond a single investigation. The party called for the establishment of an independent investigation panel comprising legal experts, child protection advocates, medical specialists and civil society representatives to ensure impartial oversight. On school safety, it called for mandatory 24-hour warden coverage in all boarding facilities, closed-circuit television installation in common areas and secure access controls. It also advocated compulsory anti-bullying education programs and annual safeguarding training for educational staff as well as confidential reporting channels for students to raise concerns without fear of reprisal. The party's reform agenda extends to legislative changes, including strengthened laws imposing clear accountability on educational institutions for student safety and stricter penalties for negligence or cover-ups by responsible parties. Also mandatory public reporting of serious school incidents with accompanying action plans. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? LDP slams Umno Youth chief over flag incident
Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 Text Size: Nicholas (left) criticised Akmal's (right) response to two elderly Chinese shopkeepers in Penang who mistakenly hung the Malaysian flag upside down. Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has condemned Umno Youth Chief Dr Akmal Saleh's handling of a recent national flag incident, calling his actions irresponsible and dangerous, and urging Sabahan voters to reject Umno in the next general election. LDP Information Chief Nicholas Bam criticised Akmal's response to two elderly Chinese shopkeepers in Penang who mistakenly hung the Malaysian flag upside down. Advertisement Rather than addressing the error respectfully, Akmal publicly labelled the pair 'kurang ajar' (ill-mannered) in a video, exposed their shop's address, and encouraged people to gather at the premises. 'This is not about correcting a mistake — it is outright cyberbullying and political manipulation,' said Nicholas. He warned that Akmal's actions risk inciting racial tension in Malaysia's multi-ethnic society. Nicholas outlined three major concerns: Akmal's conduct amounted to public intimidation and may have violated federal laws; the elderly shopkeepers deserved patient correction, not public shaming and such divisive tactics are dangerous and threaten national unity, particularly in multicultural Sabah. He also criticised Umno's silence on the matter, suggesting it signals tacit approval of Akmal's behaviour. 'Bringing West Malaysia's race-based politics into Sabah is unacceptable,' Nicholas said, affirming that the LDP will not allow Sabah to become a testing ground for racial division.' He urged authorities to investigate Akmal's actions for inciting hatred and emphasised that the rule of law must take precedence over political interests. 'Your vote is your power,' Nicholas told Sabahan voters. 'Use it to send a clear message: Sabah rejects racial politics, rejects hate, and rejects politicians who trade division for votes.' He added, 'A healthy democracy cannot thrive on fear. It must be built on respect and reason. Akmal's actions insult democratic values and underestimate the intelligence of the people. 'We stand with all Malaysians who value unity and peace. Sabah wants a united Malaysia — not one torn apart by hatred. Sabahans, draw the line for our future with your vote.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
