LDP slams Umno Youth chief over flag incident

Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has condemned Umno Youth Chief Dr Akmal Saleh's handling of a recent national flag incident, calling his actions irresponsible and dangerous, and urging Sabahan voters to reject Umno in the next general election. Advertisement Rather than addressing the error respectfully, Akmal publicly labelled the pair 'kurang ajar' (ill-mannered) in a video, exposed their shop's address, and encouraged people to gather at the premises. 'This is not about correcting a mistake — it is outright cyberbullying and political manipulation,' said Nicholas. He warned that Akmal's actions risk inciting racial tension in Malaysia's multi-ethnic society. Nicholas outlined three major concerns: Akmal's conduct amounted to public intimidation and may have violated federal laws; the elderly shopkeepers deserved patient correction, not public shaming and such divisive tactics are dangerous and threaten national unity, particularly in multicultural Sabah. He also criticised Umno's silence on the matter, suggesting it signals tacit approval of Akmal's behaviour. 'Bringing West Malaysia's race-based politics into Sabah is unacceptable,' Nicholas said, affirming that the LDP will not allow Sabah to become a testing ground for racial division.' He urged authorities to investigate Akmal's actions for inciting hatred and emphasised that the rule of law must take precedence over political interests. 'Your vote is your power,' Nicholas told Sabahan voters. 'Use it to send a clear message: Sabah rejects racial politics, rejects hate, and rejects politicians who trade division for votes.' He added, 'A healthy democracy cannot thrive on fear. It must be built on respect and reason. Akmal's actions insult democratic values and underestimate the intelligence of the people. 'We stand with all Malaysians who value unity and peace. Sabah wants a united Malaysia — not one torn apart by hatred. MCA Youth lodges police reports over Jalur Gemilang mishap and threats
PETALING JAYA: Selangor and Penang MCA Youth have filed police reports against Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and Terengganu Umno Youth over a social media post displaying the Jalur Gemilang with 12 stripes instead of the official 14. Petaling Jaya MCA Youth chief Andy Teoh stated that the first report was personal, concerning an Aug 11 video in which Dr Akmal allegedly made a threatening statement to the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) over a flat-related case involving a hardware store owner. Teoh noted that Dr Akmal had previously expressed his intention to visit a hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, to "teach" him how to display the national flag correctly. Teoh emphasised that politicians and assemblymen have no authority to interfere with the DPP's work, and such actions amounted to obstruction of justice. The second report pertained to Terengganu Umno Youth's Facebook post featuring the 12-stripe Jalur Gemilang, which was seen as disrespectful to the national flag. Teoh remarked that Dr Akmal had previously called for police action in similar flag incidents involving others and should be held to the same standard by voluntarily suspending himself until investigations are completed. "Now that Terengganu Umno has displayed the flag incorrectly, the Umno Youth chief should be treated the same way and suspended from his position pending investigation," Teoh said after lodging the report at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters on Tuesday (Aug 12) night. Four police reports were lodged by Teoh, Petaling Jaya MCA Youth deputy secretary Lok Cha Jung, Penang MCA Youth chief Sit Jie Hao, and Bangi MCA Youth chief Yang Kok Bao. MCA Youth divisions from Petaling Jaya, Bangi, Hulu Langat, Sekinchan, Klang, Sungai Besar, Pandan, and Penang members also attended to show support. Sit Jie Hao stated that elected representatives should protect the people, not threaten them. "The police are already investigating, and it is up to them to decide whether to charge the shop owner. Dr Akmal's threats amount to online bullying. "Penang does not welcome him; he should focus on serving his own constituency instead of meddling in others' affairs," he said, adding that without a report, police might not act. Yang Kok Bao stressed that the law should be applied equally. "The shop owner has already apologised. We hope the Terengganu Umno case will be investigated in the same way," he said. Klang MCA Youth chief Sean Wong Zhi Xuan noted that Sin Chew Daily's editor-in-chief had previously been detained over a misplacement of the national flag. "Both the Sin Chew editor-in-chief and the shop owner have faced the consequences of their actions. Now that Terengganu Umno Youth has made a mistake, the police should investigate equally and without double standards," he said. The controversy began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated for flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down outside his premises. He said the mistake occurred while measuring a flagpole and was corrected shortly after. Dr Akmal, a vocal critic of improper flag displays, had announced plans to protest at the shop. On Tuesday, Terengganu Umno Youth faced online ridicule after posting a social media image of the Jalur Gemilang with only 12 stripes instead of the official 14, despite previously condemning others for similar errors. In a later Facebook video, Dr Akmal confirmed the mistake came from a Terengganu Umno Youth member who designed the poster. He called for the authorities to investigate and prosecute the individual.

Voice of doubt in Nvidia's H20 chips grows louder in China
US chip giant Nvidia faces increasing mistrust in China over its H20 chips, after the company secured a licence from Washington to export the tailor-made processors by agreeing to pay 15 per cent of its revenues to the US government. On Sunday, a Chinese state media outlet labelled Nvidia's H20 chip as unsafe and urged Chinese buyers to boycott the artificial intelligence processors designed for the Chinese market. Despite Nvidia's repeated denials of 'back-door' vulnerabilities, Yuyuan Tantian, associated with state broadcaster China Central Television, said the H20 chip could not be trusted because of the US government's alleged efforts to embed 'back doors' in the chips. 'When a chip is neither environmentally friendly nor advanced or safe, as consumers, we certainly have the option not to buy it,' the outlet said in a commentary. It suggested that the H20 chip could be remotely controlled through hardware and software exploits, citing Washington's attempts in 1992 to implement surveillance via chip back doors and a recent bill proposed in May requiring US chipmakers to incorporate tracking features. Nvidia's chief security officer David Reber Jnr published a blog post last week titled: 'There are no back doors in Nvidia chips. No kill switches. No spyware.' Chinese state media's allegations come as the US Department of Commerce has begun issuing licences to Nvidia for exporting H20 chips to China. Nvidia and rival Advanced Micro Devices agreed to pay the US government 15 per cent of their revenues from chip sales to China as part of a deal with the Trump administration to secure export licences, the Financial Times reported on Sunday. Yuyuan Tantian's article reflects Nvidia's struggle to establish trust in China, which accounted for 13 per cent of its revenues in the last financial year despite escalating technology rivalry between Beijing and Washington. Last month, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) summoned Nvidia for discussions about the risks associated with potential tracking and remote control functions of its H20 chips. In an opinion piece titled 'How can we trust you, Nvidia?' earlier this month, the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, called on the US chipmaker to provide proof of its security measures to regain the trust of Chinese customers. In response, Nvidia said it 'does not have 'back doors' in our chips that would give anyone a remote way to access or control them'. The H20, an AI graphics processing unit released by Nvidia last year specifically for China to comply with US export restrictions, has become a focal point in the tech war between the two countries after Washington lifted a sales ban on the chip last month. While the resumption of H20 sales is expected to provide a near-term boost to China's AI development, Nvidia faces challenges amid Beijing's scrutiny and a push from domestic firms to adopt home-grown processors, such as those developed by Huawei Technologies. The CAC's review served partly 'as a reminder to domestic firms to avoid over-reliance on a single chip and to always be prepared to use alternatives', Chinese semiconductor research firm ICwise said in a note last week, which has since been deleted.
