Coolie OTT Update: Rajinikanth And Lokesh Kanagaraj's Action Thriller May Drop After 8-Week Run
Lokesh Kanagaraj's upcoming action thriller Coolie, headlined by superstar Rajinikanth, is already making waves as one of the most ambitious films in Tamil cinema. Even ahead of its theatrical release, the buzz surrounding the project continues to mount—especially now, with new chatter about its OTT debut.
According to a recent post by industry tracker Laxmi Kanth on X (formerly Twitter), the makers of Coolie are reportedly eyeing a digital premiere on Amazon Prime Video. However, they're said to be planning the streaming release only after the film completes an extensive 8-week theatrical run, underlining the confidence in its box office potential.
While Amazon Prime has been pegged as the official digital partner, no formal confirmation has been issued yet by the production team.
Meanwhile, director Lokesh Kanagaraj recently shared insights into how Coolie took shape, particularly the moment Rajinikanth came on board. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Lokesh revealed that the iconic actor gave his nod to the project midway through the narration.
'I didn't expect him to say yes. I narrated only the first half and paused at the interval block to ask if he'd be interested," Lokesh said. 'He immediately said yes. I hadn't even written the second half yet. When I returned a couple of months later with the complete script, he loved it."
According to Letterboxd, Coolie follows the journey of Deva—played by Rajinikanth—once the formidable leader of a mafia syndicate. Years after his empire collapses, Deva finds a mysterious way to reconnect with his old crew: through a set of vintage golden watches embedded with stolen tech.
But what begins as a mission to revive a fallen legacy soon takes an unexpected turn, as Deva finds his world spiraling into something much larger, and far more uncontrollable, than he had ever imagined.
As excitement builds around both the film's theatrical release and its eventual OTT debut, Coolie is shaping up to be not just another Rajinikanth film—but a cinematic event in itself.

Did AR Murugadoss just blame Salman Khan starrer Sikandar's failure on his inability to understand Hindi?
Director AR Murugadoss is gearing up for the release of his next Tamil movie, Madharasi, starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead. As part of the promotions, the director was seen at an event where he seemed to have indicated the failure of the Salman Khan starrer Sikandar, due to his inability to understand Hindi. AR Murugadoss about Salman Khan's Sikandar failure Talking about his recent venture, director AR Murugadoss said, 'When we make films in our mother tongue, it gives us strength. We know what is happening here. Today, there's a trend going and suddenly the audience gets connected with that trend.' 'When we shift language, we don't know what the youngsters are enjoying in that language. All we need is a script to believe it,' the director added. Highlighting how it feels working in other languages, Murugadoss revealed that Telugu is somewhat easy for him to understand, but he doesn't know Hindi at all. The filmmaker continued, 'For once, I can take up Telugu films, but Hindi may not work for us because after we write the script, they translate it into English. Then it is again translated into Hindi. When you make a film in an unknown language and place, it feels like you are handicapped. It is like you don't have hands.' More about Sikandar Sikandar, starring Salman Khan in the lead, is an action drama flick featuring the Bollywood superstar as Sanjay "Sikandar" Rajkot, the final heir of the Rajkot dynasty in Gujarat. As he is dealing with her loss, Sikandar learns his wife had decided to donate her organs to various people in Mumbai. Struck with grief, the king decides to safeguard everyone who received his wife's organs, with an old foe waiting to resurface. The movie was massively dealt with negative reviews upon release and eventually tanked at the box office. It is available for streaming on Netflix. Vidhu Vinod Chopra asked Vidya Balan to get a nose job before Parineeta: ‘He said let's get a surgery done, I refused'
Although she eventually came to be known as one of the finest actors of her generation, Vidya Balan's entry into the industry, let alone her rise to the top, was no cakewalk. Despite getting the chance to make an enviable acting debut, opposite Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, in screenwriter-director AK Lohithadas' Chakram, the opportunity slipped through her fingers as the project was shelved after a few days of filming. This also caused her to lose the other Malayalam projects she had signed. Though she then tried to make her foray into cinema through the Tamil industry, these efforts also proved unsuccessful. Even the Malayalam film she completed, Kalari Vikraman, failed to reach the screens, thus crushing her spirits totally. The movie remains unreleased to this day. Even for her Hindi film debut, she was asked to get a nose job by producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Thus, before eventually making her debut in the Bengali film Bhalo Theko (2003) and getting her big break in Parineeta (2005), Vidya endured many setbacks. Among the heartbreaks that she faced, the one that stung the most was being coerced to give up her last name. Maintaining that she was pressured into rechristening herself as 'Vidya Iyer' during her initial days trying to make her debut in Malayalam, the actor revealed that the project, however, didn't take off eventually, sparing her from having to adopt a name against her will. 'During a Malayalam film, they suggested I drop 'Balan' and use my community's name — like Manju Warrier or Samyuktha Varma. I changed it to Vidya Iyer… and cried. My parents reminded me I'd always be Vidya Balan. That film didn't happen anyway. That's when I knew: if something doesn't feel right, it's not meant to be,' she told Filmfare. As the chat progressed, she also revealed that renowned filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra wasn't entirely impressed by her face and asked her to get a nose surgery. 'Vidhu Vinod Chopra said, 'Your nose is too long, let's get a surgery done.' I refused. I've never had anything done to my face — just the odd facial. I've always believed in keeping my face the way God made it,' Vidya stated. It may be recalled that Parineeta was produced and co-written by Vidhu. Vidya Balan's debut was meant to be Malayalam film Chakram with @Mohanlal and Dileep. Film got shelved. — CinemaRare (@CinemaRareIN) October 16, 2017 Opening up about her career after receiving widespread recognition with Parineeta, Vidya admitted that the journey ahead wasn't as easy as all had expected it would be. 'Parineeta was a massive success. Top directors started calling. But at photoshoots, they'd say, 'Let's try something new with you,' and I'd think, 'What have you even seen of me to want something new?' They'd say, 'Let's make you look younger and sexy.' I was open to experimenting, but after a while, it got frustrating,' she added. Vidya, who bagged the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in director Milan Luthria's The Dirty Picture (2011), was last seen in the horror comedy Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024).
