Murder arrest after teen struck and killed by car
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a teenager who was struck and killed by a car.
The 19-year-old victim died at the scene of the crash which happened at 20:10 BST on Monday on Porritt Street, Bury.
Det Supt Wesley Knights from Greater Manchester Police said: "I would like to reassure the public that this is a targeted attack and there is no wider threat to the community."
Officers have arrested a man aged in his 30s who remains in custody for questioning.
Det Supt Knights said: "I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time."
He asked witnesses or anyone with video footage from the area at the time to contact police.

Judge Arun Subramanian had her removed from the courtroom while Combs reportedly did not react to the disruption. The disturbance came on a crucial day of testimony from Eddy Garcia, a security guard at InterContinental Hotel in Century City, CA where Combs was spotted by surveillance cameras beating former girlfriend Cassie Ventura in 2016. The CCTV video was leaked by CNN in 2024. Garcia said on the stand that the music producer asked him for the footage because it would otherwise "ruin him," per The Independent. Garcia testified that his boss offered it to Combs for $50,000. Per Garcia, the video was delivered to the performer in exchange for $100,00 via a paper bag. Garcia's boss reportedly had "to sign an NDA with a $1 million penalty." Combs is facing two charges of sex trafficking, two charges of transportation to engage in prostitution, and a racketeering conspiracy charge after federal investigators accused him of "kidnapping, drugging, and coercing women into sexual activities, sometimes using firearms or threats of violence" between 2004 and 2024, per the BBC. His trial, which began on May 12, is expected to last eight to 10 weeks. He faces life in prison for the racketeering charge alone. Combs has continued to maintain his innocence to the charges, but he apologized for his behavior after the Ventura clip surfaced. "I take full responsibility for my actions in that video," Combs said in a now-deleted Instagram statement in May 2024. "I was disgusted then when I did it. Letter campaign advances for Pottsville man held by ICE
POTTSVILLE — The friend of a man detained by ICE is leading a social media campaign to help him by gathering reference letters. On Wednesday from 5:30 to 8 p.m., Kevin Medina is also offering to notarize the letters at no charge. The public is invited to stop by Fratello's Bistro, 420 Nichols St., during those times to get their reference letters notarized on behalf of Ruben Rojas-Vargas. Ruben Rojas-Vargas, 32, who has been in the U.S. for 16 years, was arrested May 30 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. He is being detained at an ICE facility in Phillipsburg, Centre County, according to the Online Detainee Locator System . Medina, a family friend, notary and insurance agent, started a Facebook appeal asking for letters in support of Rojas-Vargas. Those letters must be notified, however, so Medina is offering to notarize letters free of charge. This week he plans to give them to an immigration lawyer. Any supporters unable to attend Wednesday can send notarized letters to kevinm@ or they can contact him to arrange a meeting place. Medina took to Facebook last weekend to share his friend's story and ask for support. The post has 58,700 views, which surprised him. 'I simply wanted to share with the community and see how they can support him,' Medina said. So far, 85 people have committed to sign letters in support for Rojas-Vargas, a native of Mexico. The young father was going to be fitted for an ankle monitoring device after pleading guilty to a DUI from last year when ICE agents arrested him. 'We all make mistakes,' Medina said Tuesday about his friend's situation. Meanwhile, Pottsville Police Chief John Morrow said Monday he was unaware that ICE agents had taken Rojas-Vargas into custody until he saw Facebook posts. On Tuesday, Schuylkill County Sheriff Groody said he also was unaware that Rojas-Vargas had been arrested, and believes the ICE arrest is the first in the county. While not all comments on social media have been positive, Medina said the support Rojas-Vargas is receiving is heartwarming. The other comments are heartbreaking but not unexpected.

Authorities raid home where New Orleans jail escapee appeared to shoot video pleading for help: source
Authorities have raided the residence where one of the two remaining escapees from a New Orleans jail apparently shot an Instagram video proclaiming his innocence, according to a source close to the investigation. Antoine Massey, 33, was not located during the raid, the source told Fox News. Authorities found clothes belonging to Massey at the residence, according to the Associated Press, who cited an anonymous official. Police were reportedly tipped off by Massey's relatives, who recognized the home. In a now-deleted video from an Instagram account, Massey appeared to tell viewers that he didn't break out of jail on May 16, but instead that he was let out. He said maintenance workers were only allowed near inmates if they were guarded by a deputy. The Louisiana State Police (LSP) declined to verify the authenticity of the video, saying that doing so "may hinder investigative leads or law enforcement operations." Nineteen days ago, 10 men escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Facility through a hole behind a toilet in their cell. They hopped the jail's barbed-wire fence to freedom. Search Continues For Four-time Killer, Serial Escapee After New Orleans Jailbreak Over the past two-and-half weeks, LSP has led the manhunt to capture the escapees, with help from local and federal partners. So far, eight of the men have been brought back into custody. Derrick Groves, 28, a four-time killer, is the only other inmate besides Massey who has not been captured. He was being held in the jail while awaiting sentencing for an October 2024 guilty verdict in a double homicide during Mardi Gras in 2018. After he was convicted, he pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter. Massey was in jail pending a trial on charges of domestic abuse involving strangulation, theft of a motor vehicle and a parole violation. This is the fourth time that Massey has escaped from police custody. Massey's sister, 31-year-old Daishanae Massey, is one of 14 people who have been arrested for allegedly aiding the escapees either before or after they broke out of the jail.
