
An elegant afternoon at Aman Nai Lert Bangkok
A sophisticated tea should be enjoyed in an enchanting atmosphere; therefore, make a point of walking around the floor to discover Thai-inspired decorations whose inspirations may wow you. Behind the front desk, there's a white wall installation whose irregular surface should easily draw your eyes in. It's made of 3,000 luk kang, spinning tops, of varying sizes, fascinatingly arranged to spell '๑', Thai numeral one, to auspiciously signify a beginning. You can't miss a 40-foot replica of a tree with golden leaves, inspired by a centennial chamchuri tree at Nai Lert Park. It grandly reaches down from the ceiling, almost touching a reflective pond adorned with floating lanterns that evokes a Loy Krathong vibe. Handcrafted leather clouds that cast ever-changing shadows throughout the day by the kinetic lighting - a nod to Thai puppet shadow play n a ng yai.
The visual feast doesn't stop there as it extends to the afternoon tea's presentation. The colourful sweet and savoury treats, befitting summery bites, stand out on a two-tier black serving tray. You can enjoy afternoon tea indoors underneath the soaring ceiling or outdoors on the expansive balcony (when the weather is kind) with an overlooking view of Nai Lert Park in the foreground and skyscrapers in the background.
Created by French-born executive pastry chef Florian Couteau, the afternoon tea is inspired by his childhood memories of summertime gatherings in France. Each bite reflects the vibrancy of summer through the natural sweetness of fruits and vegetables sourced from across Thailand and beyond. No added sugar.
The indulgent set kicks off with the chilled Tomato and red pepper sorbet, a gazpacho-inspired starter that opens the palate with a sweet and savoury blend. The savoury selection comprises bursting-with-flavour Smoked trout tartlet with dill-infused sour cream and ikura, savoury-yet-citrusy Duck confit waffle accentuated with orange compote and pistachio, delicate-and-decadent Alaskan crab cannelloni with apple and cucumber jelly topped with Oscietra caviar and refreshing-yet-tangy Shine muscat tartlet with thyme-infused goat cheese and sherry vinegar.
For something sweet but not saccharine, dig into Melon parfait, which combines French and Thai varieties of melon for a refreshing sweetness which goes great with Prosecco jelly and slightly tangy Fromage blanc for a delicious contrast.
The sweet side of the set is also a symphony of flavours, I find. Aman 70% signature chocolate tartlet blends artisanal chocolate sourced locally from Chiang Mai, Chantaburi and Phetchaburi, paired with buckwheat and miso caramel for a touch of umami. Exotic baba means the classic French cake gets a tropical treatment with pineapples sourced from Hua Hin and Phuket, and citrusy notes of passionfruit. Pistachio and berries layer cake highlights raspberries from the North while Apricot and whisky tart pairs sweet and fragrant Roussillon apricots with the smoky depth of Japanese whisky Nikka.
You can't complete an afternoon tea without scones. 1872 serves freshly baked plain and blueberry scones accompanied by homemade clotted cream, banana and passionfruit jam and lemon curd.
Oh, and if you like it sweet without the guilt, opt for the Mango sticky rice black tea. I don't know what kind of voodoo they do, but I do get an essence of the classic dessert in every sip. If you want to go full-on summer, opt for Summer meadow blend, which tastes orangey at first before slight bitterness quickly takes over. The tea selections from other Aman destinations, including Aman Kyoto's signature matcha, are also on offer.

Plan offers free domestic flights to 200,000 foreign arrivals
The Tourism and Sports Ministry plans to offer free domestic flight tickets to 200,000 foreign arrivals to boost tourism nationwide over a three-month period. The ministry expects the give-away to generate 8.8 billion baht in revenue from a budget of 700 million baht, but it still needs cabinet approval. Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong said the campaign was themed 'Buy International, Free Thailand Domestic Flights', and would encourage foreign tourists to visit secondary destinations. Japan had used a similar strategy, providing free domestic seats to tourists, earlier this year. He said foreigners holding an international flight ticket would be able to claim one round-trip domestic flight ticket with 20 kilogrammes of baggage for free on six Thai carriers - Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air and Thai Vietjet. The free tickets would be offered when tourists book international flights directly with airlines or online travel agents. "This is an exclusive campaign for foreign visitors who haven't yet booked a ticket," said Mr Sorawong. The ministry plans to propose the scheme to the cabinet for approval next week, seeking 700 million baht from the central budget, he said. The programme is scheduled to run from September to November, with a government subsidy of 1,750 baht per one-way ticket, or 3,500 baht for a round-trip ticket, for each tourist. Punlop Saejew, vice-president of the Chiang Mai Chamber of Commerce, said the campaign would help tourism to some extent, although the arrival flow was already strong during high season. He said the campaign would be more effective if launched during the low season. Mr Punlop suggested the government allocate funds to help domestic airfares, which remain a barrier for travellers because of the high cost. Rungroj Santadvanit, president of the lower northeastern chapter of the Thai Hotels Association, said northeastern provinces may not benefit as much from this scheme, as they are not top destinations for foreign tourists, even though Buri Ram and Ubon Ratchathani have domestic flights from Bangkok. Apart from free flights, Mr Rungroj said authorities should plan marketing strategies and activities tailored to target markets of each location. For example, Buri Ram should promote sports and marathons as a sports tourism hub, while Ubon Ratchathani could highlight attractions along the Mekong River. He said northern provinces should attract more nature lovers from Australia and New Zealand, and the South should draw beach-loving visitors from Scandinavia. 'More importantly, the government must ensure tourism safety and clearly communicate which areas are safe to visit, especially amid the ongoing Thailand-Cambodia border tensions,' said Mr Rungroj. As of Aug 17, 20.8 million foreign tourists have visited Thailand this year, a decrease of 7% year-on-year. The largest market was China with 2.9 million arrivals.

Cambodian singer bans own songs over use of Thai melodies
PHNOM PENH – Cambodian singer and television mentor Chhorn Sovannareach announced on Tuesday he will no longer perform seven of his most popular songs, after admitting they were based on Thai melodies. The Cambodian Idol and The Voice Cambodia mentor issued a statement on his official Facebook page apologising to fans in advance, saying he could no longer honour requests for the songs. The affected tracks are One Month Ten Days, Meeting to Break Up, Know, Bedtime Story, I Dare Not Tell You in Person, A Time for Tears, and Are You Happy, My Love? 'I sincerely apologise to all my listeners and fans. I cannot perform these songs any longer as their melodies were adapted from Thai music several years ago. I ask for your understanding,' Sovannareach wrote. The singer's decision, which he described as a self-imposed boycott, has drawn attention in Cambodia's entertainment industry, where cross-border influences have long played a role in shaping the country's music scene.
