Ryan Reynolds' $150m box-office bomb just crashed the Prime Video top 10 — and this sci-fi action movie doesn't deserve a second chance

Tom's Guide21-05-2025
Looking over the Prime Video top 10 this week has caused an unwelcome flashback.
The rotating ranking of the most-watched movies on the popular streaming service has made me recall the summer of 2013 when I turned 18, thoroughly embarrassed myself after trying vodka-cranberry for the first time, and endured 'R.I.P.D.' in theaters. I'm not sure which experience was more traumatic.
This sci-fi blockbuster fronted by Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges cost Universal Pictures an eye-watering $150m to produce, and recouped barely half its budget in theaters. I'd say that's 50% too much, because frankly, this supernatural action-comedy was fortunate to make even a few bucks.
The movie currently ranks No. 3 in the Prime Video top 10, ahead of the likes of 'Conclave' and 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie,' and to say it doesn't deserve such a high spot on the list would be an understatement. If I had my way, it would be erased from cinematic existence.
If you're wondering whether it's worth adding to your watchlist, I'll cut to the chase: it does not. But if you're a curious type and need to know more, here's why 'R.I.P.D.' is a blockbuster blunder that should have stayed buried.
'R.I.P.D.,' or to use its ludicrous full name, 'R.I.P.D: Rest in Peace Department, sees Ryan Reynolds play Nick Walker, a Boston detective recently killed in action and recruited into the eponymous afterlife agency.
The R.I.P.D. is a supernatural task force that tracks down wayward spirits who have escaped judgment. Nick is soon paired up with Roy (Jeff Bridges), a department veteran and lawman in the Old West in his previous life.
When Nick and Roy stumble on a dangerous plot that could see vengeful spirits descend upon the world of the living, they embark on a quest to save not just their souls but also protect Nick's loved one still living in our reality.
Also starring Kevin Bacon as Nick's former partner, alongside Mary-Louise Parker, Stéphanie Szostak and Robert Knepper, 'R.I.P.D.' is a buddy-cop action flick with an otherworldly twist.
Typically, at this point in my write-ups, I'd try and list at least one reason that you might find 'R.I.P.D.' a worthwhile watch but this time, I got nothing.
Let me spell this out very clearly: 'R.I.P.D.' is an unmitigated disaster. It's the type of movie that makes you question why you're a movie fan in the first place. It's a complete mess all the way down. It trades any interest or intrigue for shlocky action spectacle and corny humor.
And the action on offer isn't even enjoyable in a 'switch-your-brain-off' way either. It leaps between generic sci-fi set pieces and downright uncomfortable moments, with some truly bizarre CGI creations that will make your skin crawl — and not in the way the filmmakers probably intended.
Ryan Reynolds is in full autopilot mode as Nick Walker. The charismatic actor spouts endless lazy sarcastic quips, and Nick's bland redemption arc doesn't come close to connecting. If you thought his performance as Hal Jordan in the infamously awful 'Green Lantern' movie was phoned in, you haven't seen anything yet. At least Jeff Bridges attempts to inject some energy, but to no avail.
The movie was also clearly supposed to be a franchise starter, so it spends far too much time trying to establish its world in the hopes that it would be revisited many times in the future. The flick's box office failings quickly put those plans on ice and all we got was a direct-to-DVD sequel, 'R.I.P.D. 2: Rise of the Damned,' which got even worse reviews (obviously, I skipped that one).
Speaking of reviews, 'R.I.P.D.' was not a critical darling. It holds a dreadful 13% score on Rotten Tomatoes. To put that score into context, it's lower than 'Fifty Shades of Grey' and every single 'Twilight' movie. That's the level of awfulness we're talking about here.
Even the few viewers who stumped up the cash to see this movie in theaters weren't impressed. The movie's audience score sits at a pitiful 38%, which is extremely damning considering on the whole viewer's ratings tend to be much more favourable than the critics.
If you really need a sci-fi action fix on Prime Video this week, might I suggest 'The Tomorrow War.'
Now, laying my cards on the table, this Chris Pratt-fronted blockbuster is no masterpiece. It falls into a lot of the same traps as 'R.I.P.D.' with a focus on messy action, and it's instantly forgettable, but it'll at least hold your attention throughout its two-hour runtime.
The movie sees Chris Pratt play a former soldier, now a teacher, who is enlisted to fight a future war when time travelers come to present-day Earth to warn that an alien invasion is about to wipe out the Earth in thirty years. The Prime Video original movie also stars J. K. Simmons, Yvonne Strahovski, Betty Gilpin and Sam Richardson.
Powered by a $200m budget, it packs plenty of high-production action and is at least passable entertainment. Which is a lot more than can be said for 'R.I.P.D.' So if you really want to bring home some sci-fi blockbuster thrills this week, the choice on Prime Video is pretty obvious.
Alternatively, if you want to watch something of actual quality that I can recommend without any caveats, here's a list of new to Prime Video movies with at least 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Imagine's Long-Term Value of Limited-Time Destinations

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 19, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Imagine and Midnight Oil continue to demonstrate leadership in visual communications, thinking outside the box to immerse visitors in brands at physical locations that signify more than just merchandise on display. By teaming up with industry giants 7-Eleven and Universal Pictures, one of the most anticipated movie releases of 2025 — Jurassic World Rebirth — had a celebration as epic as the partnership itself. The groundbreaking creative campaign transformed three 7-Eleven locations into bona fide dino landmarks featuring 360-degree wraps, offering customers themed exclusives and unforgettable memories. With a global pop-up retail market on track to hit $80 billion by 2027, Imagine's novel approach of pushing captivating experiences over products checks all the right boxes. The lucrative potential of pop-ups is driven by the increasing demand from consumers for memorable, multisensory, and community-driven encounters. 83% of Gen Z and Millennials believe brands should interact more with their consumers through experiences, which explains why pop-ups that evoke emotions are outperforming their traditional counterparts that focus solely on product sales. Crafting temporary, destination-worthy spaces that go big on scent, movement, texture, and drama triggers excitement and engages audiences that crave hyper-personalized interactions. "In any marketing launch, imagery is everything,' says Mike Gade, board member of The Imagine Group. 'Transforming a retail space into a canvas for your campaign is a fast, cost-effective, and high-impact way to immerse customers in the experience in real time." Brand takeovers of exteriors are a powerful tool for maximizing the visual impact of these experiences. 70% of people can't recall the last time a brand did anything that excited them, which presents a massive opportunity to prioritize the complete reinvention of retail spaces so they create an otherworldly sense of awe. The scale, scope, and dominance of 360-degree wraps are impossible to ignore and difficult to forget, taking a familiar structure and turning it into a portal that transports audiences into a tailored brand story. Imagine's ability to execute complete, dimensional takeovers make the building itself a beacon for brands with an effectiveness that can't be achieved with conventional advertising. The limited-time activations for Jurassic World Rebirth showcased Imagine's vision for leveraging 360-degree wraps to forge connections with an audience who desire emotional engagement more than transactions. By adapting a philosophy of being a memory provider over a service provider, Imagine is putting art and craftmanship in the spotlight. 'Collaborating with brands from day one, we handle the design, creative, print, digital production, and installation of the experience,' says Don McKenzie, CEO of The Imagine Group. 'That end-to-end capability is practically unheard of in the industry. It makes us a unique strategic partner for our clients.' Nick and Sharon's Almost Kiss Could Be Doomed by Victor's Plans on Y&R August 15

In the August 15 episode of The Young and the Restless, Nick and Sharon came closer to reigniting their long history—but the moment didn't happen in a vacuum. With Victor pulling him deeper into Newman strategy against Cane, Nick may already be facing a roadblock to any future with Sharon. A Surprising Spark The day started with Sharon (Sharon Case) voicing concern over Mariah (Camryn Grimes) shutting her and Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) out, only for Nick (Joshua Morrow) to share an unexpected detail about his latest assignment. At Victor's (Eric Braeden) urging, he's to 'buddy up' to Cane (Billy Flynn) as part of a larger Newman plan. Sharon wasn't exactly reassured—and yet, the conversation soon turned personal. Sharon admitted she felt closer to Nick than she had in a long time, then asked if he felt the same. Nick answered without words, leaning in for a kiss that would have continued what started in France… until Adam (Mark Grossman) and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) walked in and cut the moment short. The Victor Factor That interruption may have been more than just bad timing. Nick's growing role as Victor's 'good cop' in the Newman scheme to manipulate Cane ties him to a web of corporate games Sharon has no love for. Even as she was warming to him again, she was already skeptical about the risks Cane poses—and about the Newmans' constant machinations. With Nick admitting that Adam has been cast as the 'bad cop,' the lines are clearly drawn. Sharon may see Nick's involvement as a red flag, knowing how the Newman family's power plays tend to spill into personal lives. A Reunion at Risk The spark between them is undeniable, and this near-miss suggests both are open to more. But if Nick can't separate himself from Victor's maneuvering, Sharon may think twice before letting her guard down. And with Cane's unpredictable moves already consuming Newman strategy, Nick's attention could be pulled away before they have a chance to revisit what they almost shared. For now, that almost-kiss leaves the door open—but also reminds them how quickly the business of being a Newman can slam it shut. Solve the daily Crossword
