Broncos' deep WR room ready to compete for spots in preseason
Devaughn Vele is listed as the backup to Courtland Sutton and Troy Franklin is listed as the backup to Mims. Pat Bryant, the team's third-round pick in this year's draft, is buried among the rookies (don't read into that).
'Courtland has been having a really good camp," offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said earlier this week. "He looks to me even better than he did last camp. We mentioned Troy. Marvin is coming along. He finished strong last year, and we expect him to keep on that upward trajectory. Vele's been dealing with some things, but he's looking good now. I think he's had a couple of his best days the last two days."
Those four players -- plus Bryant, who will have to "earn" his spot this summer -- are the team's top WRs going into 2025. Who ends up being the sixth wide receiver remains to be seen. Lombardi specifically mentioned veteran Trent Shrierfield, who was signed this spring, and Michael Bandy, who spent the last two seasons on the practice squad.
"We've added Sherfield Sr. and he's been… I think we all know he's a great blocker, but the ball keeps finding him in practice. He's making a lot of catches out here. Bandy is always Mr. Reliable. We have some young guys that are really playing well, some of our rookies that were free agents. It's been a really good class as far as that's concerned. Like you said, we have a lot of depth and it's going to be interesting as camp goes on and develops."
The competition for playing time at receiver will heat up this weekend when the Broncos face the San Francisco 49ers on the road in their preseason opener. The list of undrafted rookies competing for spots features Joaquin Davis, Courtney Jackson, Jerjuan Newton and Kyrese Rowan.
Everyone will look to impress over the next few weeks ahead of the cutdown to a 53-man roster. Several receivers who don't end up on the active roster could stick around on the practice squad -- or catch on with another team. The preseason games will be crucial. Stay tuned.

WATCH: Former Ohio State QB Justin Fields scores first preseason touchdown in Jets uniform
The Justin Fields experiment in New York has officially begun, and it started with Fields showing what has so many Jets fans excited about the prospects of what he could be -- hopefully, consistently. There's no doubting Fields' athletic ability. He's been blessed with more athletic gifts than arguably any quarterback in the league, and he has flashed them on more than one occasion. He nearly broke the single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback with the Bears, and showed glimpses of the light of coming on across the board with the Pittsburgh Steelers before landing in New York as a free agent. On Saturday, he showed that running ability again, this time pulling the ball down on a third and five, to take it 13 yards for a touchdown on his first drive under center in the J-E-T-S green. During the run, he got the corner and used his top-end speed and vision to get to the front corner of the end zone before any Green Bay Packers could get to him. Fields -- understandably so -- didn't play a ton but completed 3-of-4 passes for 42 yards and rushed the ball twice for 14 yards and the one score. Here's to hoping everything finally clicks for the former Ohio State star and we get to see some highlight-reel plays for him this fall. Ohio State center named to 2025 Rimington preseason watch list
The parade of 2025 preseason award watch lists continued last week, and one of the latest announced was the Rimington preseason watch list. Initially handed out in 2000, the Rimington is awarded to the college football player judged to be the best center in the country. Last week, 40 names were announced on the preseason watch list, and Ohio State center Carson Hinzman was one of those names appearing. Originally from Hammond, Wisconsin, Hinzman was the starting center during the 2023 campaign, but fell to a backup when Seth McLaughlin transferred from Alabama and earned the No. 1 role. However, an injury to McLauglin afforded Hinzman an opportunity to step back in as the starter, and he excelled, helping lead a resurgent offensive line en route to a College Football Playoff national championship. The 6-foot, 5-inch, 300-pounder should be the starter at the position again in 2025, and there's a good chance he ends up being an All-Big Ten performer and one of the best centers in the country. The Rimington will be announced on December 12 and officially handed out during a ceremony in Lincoln, Nebraska, on January 25, 2025. Ohio State tight end named to the Mackey Award 2025 preseason watch list
We've got another Ohio State football player who's made a preseason award watch list. Last week, the Mackey Award, which goes to college football's best tight end annually, released 28 names on its 2025 preseason watch list, and OSU's Max Klare is one of those names. Out of Cincinnati St. Xavier, Klare played for Purdue his first three seasons before transferring to Ohio State via the transfer portal at the end of last season. He was an All-Big Ten performer in 2024 and is expected to grab the starting tight end spot for the Buckeyes as one of the best tight ends in the conference and country. He finished 2024 with 51 receptions for 685 yards (13.4 ypc) and four touchdowns. Plugging him into an offense with Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate, and the best wide receiving corps in the country should afford Klare plenty of opportunities to build on those numbers this fall. The Mackey Award will be handed out on Friday, December 12, during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN. Ohio State has never had a Mackey Award winner since it was first handed out in 2000.
